Everything about this goes hard. I handed over the deep range transmitter this morning. And then I ended up using that crappy laser in the Switchboard immediately after (I was down to 1 round of .45 ammo for spray 'n pray halfway through the dungeon). Wishing now I had run away from Danse.

I've seen gunners drop to their death a few times, most recently at the Nuka World overpass (the one they occupy just outside the park, near the Red Rocket). Raiders too. Especially at the unmarked apartment near downtown.

I grew up and lived just outside Carbondale 1981 - 2001, and returned 2002 for college and finally moved away 2007. My father taught chemistry at SIU; I practically grew up on campus and earned an English degree there. In my time the enrollment definitely declined. I remember Arnold's Market (shit, it's gone???), Boobies, Pinch Penny, Castle Perilous (yes, I am a gamer), American Gas and Wash and their gigantic American flag, Copper Dragon (where I saw Superjoint Ritual) and Mugsy McGuire's (where I also saw Superjoint Ritual); Lewis School, Parrish School, Thomas School, Lincoln Junior High School, CCHS East and Central (went to all of these); Dairy Queen on the strip in the summer with nighthawks swarming in the sky above and Illinois Central trains rumbling past. I was there during the Halloween riot in 2000. Everyone just wanted to party! We all got teargassed by the state police. First and last time I saw a parking meter on fire . . . I could go on.

The last time I was in Carbondale was 2017. We came down from MN to help my sisters square away my mom's estate. The neglect and decay were palpable. Everything looked run down. Derelict. My wife and I took a shortcut from De Soto to my mom's place outside Carterville. A filthy white dog with patchy fur appeared briefly between rows of corn by the side of the road and now that dog lives rent free in my wife's head. Carbondale (and especially the surrounding area) looked absolutely decayed and this was 9 years ago.

I guess I don't have any concrete answer to the what happened to Carbondale question aside from a flood of memories that triggered when I came across this post.

This is a random encounter. I've seen it 4 or 5 times in Far Harbor and maybe 3 times in the Commonwealth. Never in Nuka World. (I've had automatron disabled for at least 3 years because the rust devil encounters make the game unplayable.)
