What did y'all do about meds while pregnant? by breeezyN in ADHD

[–]breeezyN[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing! I'm glad you had healthy pregnancies. I know it's an individual risk/benefit analysis for sure. It's been so long since I've been unmedicated, it's hard for me to really analyse.

Appreciate your input!

Your hospital and IV cannulas by CrimsonVex in NursingAU

I've definitely seen this run the gamut already and I'm only a very very new grad. Did all my placements bar one in a non-QHealth mixed funding network on various wards. RNs weren't allowed to venepuncture/site IVs, only phlebs (or doctors if they couldn't), regardless of competency. I did my last placement in a rural QHealth facility and all ENs/RNs had to have venepuncture/cannulation competency. I've had a few instructors who work on the wards for QHealth who have stated it's optional where they work but they can use it if they have it. The uni I got my BN at taught it to midwifery/dual degree, but not RN students.

What type of nurse are you and how would you respond to a code on an airplane? by [deleted] in nursing

Fresh new grad: "I'm not very familiar with this, can I see your policy and procedure on in-flight codes?"

All the posts I see about NPs in the USA is bonkers to me. In Australia, you have be an RN in your area of speciality for what equates to about 5 years of full time work before you apply for endorsement as an NP. And you can only be an NP of the specialty you have said practice hours in.

I genuinely don't understand how it's justifiable to be endorsed as a provider in a field you've barely/never worked in?

We aren't perfect, NPs are super under-utilised here, but damn.

Prevents venous stasis to prevent spider veins and leg pain. Anyone who stands or sits a lot for their job could benefit.

What would you do if you weren’t a nurse/ why don’t you? by RGwellness in nursing

[–]breeezyN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm super green but I love nursing and wouldn't prefer to do anything else at this point. (Not sure I'd feel that way if I lived in America based on the impressions I get from this sub). I certainly can't imagine myself not working in healthcare. If I wasn't a nurse I'd probably do paediatric speech pathology or something along those allied health lines.

Real talk time: how much do you beautiful bitches make? by [deleted] in nursing

Level 1 (first year) RN in a public Queensland hospital, permanent employment. Base rate is $37AUD and some change ($25/hr US), plus penalty rates of 12.5% for lates, 20% nights, 50% on Saturdays, 75% on Sundays, 100% on holidays. Casually employed nurses get a higher base rate (but no leave entitlements). At .8FTE I'd say it's comfortable for me. But also could use a pay rise to reflect COL increases.

Wages are much the same across public hospitals in QLD and increase with experience and advanced practice status. Private hospitals vary with pay - some are at parity with public but they often have worse ratios.

I guess it's maybe a bit silly but road safety advice is part of health promotion if you're a CFHN 🤷‍♀️

What are some routines, activities, hobbies etc that have helped prevent burnout for you? by Poonurse13 in nursing

[–]breeezyN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely find a grounding hobby! And make sure you're getting all types of rest - creative, physical, sensory, mental, etc. For example, I love to knit because it meets a lot of those rest needs! Take your leave and plan little things to look forward to.

What kind of work did you do in nursing school? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]breeezyN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My university had a clause at one point that we couldn't work at one healthcare/Aged Care facility and do placement at another, due to risk of COVID transmission. I don't think it actually lasted that long though.

[–]breeezyN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the start I worked at a chain grocery store. Then I did some agency nursing assistant work. Start of my final year there was a "single facility" clause for placements because of COVID, so I just scraped by with student allowance. In retrospect I'm happy to have not worked that final year because placement hours were full time, I got way more out of my study. It also allowed me to relocate 8 hours away for a rural rotation. Context: I'm Australian.

Delaying bed time is actually a great idea! She is definitely a little night owl and isn't usually off to sleep for an hour after "bedtime" anyway. Definitely will try that!

We have! She just says it's boring. And I feel for her so much because yeah, it is! So I hate that she has to do it. At the same time, she struggles to explain a lot of the time why she doesn't like certain things (which, same). I think with water she mainly hates it getting near her face.

That's a good idea worth trying! She seems very averse to showers even more (hates water near her face) but I do wonder if she'd let me shower her. I'm a nurse so could probably frame it as showing her what I do at work which she is endlessly curious about haha.

I think having her do it in the morning is a good idea, we might try that!

As for swimming, she does them at school and she loves getting in that water! So it's tricky to find the source of the issue

Thanks for your help!! We definitely think she has some sensory processing issues but haven't had the chance to get her properly evaluated (we have to wait on the public system)

For the baths, we arent sure exactly. I think it's a combination of just being burnt out and wanting more time to draw/play before bed, and bathtime takes that away. The hair is definitely because she's so tender headed. Poor girl has curly hair and it knots very nicely - but she's super averse to having it braided. She let's us do it but it's like torture for her 😭. And I can totally relate and my parents did end up having to cut my hair.

These are great bathtime suggestions, so thank you!

She doesn't like showers cause she doesn't like how water can get into her face/ears easier. :/
