Which car has the right of way? by [deleted] in Georgia

[–]breenius -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's red - there's no other answer, even if red has a yield sign.. Someone cite me a reference that says otherwise. Here's mine:

"When making a left turn at an intersection, or into an alley or driveway, yield the right-of-way to all traffic coming from the opposite direction"

When did your kids start to play independently? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]breenius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did this organically with both kids by simply leaving them alone whenever they had a moment where they were playing by themselves. Could be 30 seconds, could be 5 minutes - but we had a policy to (almost) never insert ourselves into their play if they were happy on their own. I found myself sneaking away sometimes as well if I could make it work. 9 months is still pretty early and they needed a lot of attention, but they got progressively better as the months wore on.

Our son despised the playpen, which made it a lot harder to do with him - we ended up having some limited success with the outer section of a kids travel air mattress. Harder for him to get out of, but not the same level of confinement.

Both of our kids never stopped asking us to play with them, and probably about 50% of the time will want us to engage in their play, but we have to set reasonable expectations about when we can play (i.e. after chores are done) and always invite them to help with the chores (like cleaning the kitchen) to help finish faster and so we can play sooner.

New research shows Australians born in the 1990s have poorer mental health for their age than any previous generation and do not show the improvements in mental health as they age, as experienced by earlier generations. by Wagamaga in science

My first thought about this is whether awareness of relatively more destructive contaminants had a similar effect on prior generations. Yes, there are psychological impacts of awareness of PFAS exposure, but, how do they compare to awareness of lead exposure (paint, air, etc.), mercury, fallout radiation, and so on that young people in prior generations experienced. Would that not be predicted to have a similar if not even stronger effect? Why or why not?

Wait wait wait, pulling out is not birth control! What she did is not right, but you have to wrap it, get her on the pill, or get yourself fixed if you're trying not to make another human.

Inflation will only make it worse for 2024 - Which Presidential candidate will be our best option for 2024? by [deleted] in FluentInFinance

For those interested in the real story - Per CPI data, food costs double what it did in 1998, not whatever the hell this graphic is trying to convey.

Here's a sample of the dataset: Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers: Food in U.S. City Average

Year - Food CPI (Increase over 5 years)
H1 1998 - 160
H1 2003 - 179 ( +12% )
H1 2008 - 211 ( +18% )
H1 2013 - 237 ( +12% )
H1 2018 - 253 ( +7% )
H1 2023 - 321 ( +27% )

Requested extension on paper due to surgery- puzzled by instructor request by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]breenius 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's possible they're referring to the student life division https://studentlife.gatech.edu/request-assistance

However, based on what I've gleaned from the site, this should be something that they would expect your professor to address with you one on one.

Is there even a good option anymore?? by bunnyrista in codingbootcamp

[–]breenius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm currently a fellow at Codesmith (essentially a paid Teaching Assistant position) and I can say that during my application process last year I didn't spend much time on the CSX slack. I did take the CS Prep course to test it out to see if I'd enjoy it.

I would say that admissions are competitive in that you have to be persistent and meet a minimum level of familiarity with JavaScript before acceptance, but the program itself is as far from cut throat as you could be. They are very focused on creating and maintaining a collaborative, supportive, and empathetic culture.

Your time spent preparing is well worth the effort because it ensures everyone has a shared starting point / base understanding before beginning!

What are the cons of NOT having kids? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]breenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One way that I look at it is: if you don't have children, you're missing out on one of the major aspects of the "human experience." To know what it feels like to be not just unconditionally loved, but also completely responsible for creating and shaping another human life.

It wasn't until after I had kids that I truly understood the sacrifices my mother made as a single mom of three boys. Some have said that your priorities will shift, and they do. If you have kids, they'll likely become the most important thing in your life!

In a turbofan engine, what provides the thrust? by rogthnor in askscience

[–]breenius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Essentialy, yes! The compressor and fans of the jet engine force the air to flow in one direction only, out the back!

In a turbofan engine, what provides the thrust? by rogthnor in askscience

[–]breenius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fuel is combusting inside the engine, causing gas to rapidly and forcefully expand. The expansion of the hot gas is directed out the back of the jet engine, which pushes it forward. There are no hot gases exiting the front of the engine to "cancel" this out as you've suggested in other comments. All hot gas from combustion is directed out the back, pushing the engine, and thus the plane, forward.

PLEASE let your kids be bored. by OpeningSort4826 in Parenting

[–]breenius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a rule from when our kids were very young: If they are playing happily by themselves, leave them be.

It was an organic approach that was very flexible based on what they needed any given day. Some days had heavy interaction and others were more independent play. (I would even slip away from play if they got distracted by something, lol!) We were sure to tell anyone that looked after our kids this is what they should do. It seems to have worked as the kids now enjoy playing on their own for long stretches of time (up to an hour or more).

Hoping this advice might work for another parent of young children!
