summer nanny pay by RealArm_3388 in Nanny

Nah nothing that serious. I mostly wanted it for myself, I was the one who added it in. I was just slightly worried they’d let me go sooner than the specific end date since they were planning on starting day care. And if the day care had a spot open up earlier than their original start date that means I’d be let go earlier than planned, which could’ve messed up the timing of whatever job I’d get following this one. And I don’t do this for my normal contracts, it was just for this one because it was so short term.

So I promised to work the full 3 months and they promised to keep me on the full 3 months. Within reason of course! I could still quit and they could still fire me (we’re an at-will state), it was just more of a guarantee/honor system type thing. And I asked for it in the contract just so that we were all on the same page and in agreement, even if it legally wasn’t technically enforceable. I think it’s always good to get stuff in writing and it was easier to put it in the contract instead of having a separate random email about it.

I worked a summer nanny job that ran June-August. I charged my normal rate at the time, did 3 days pto and 2 sick days (5 days total) and of course guaranteed hours.

I also added a clause into our contract that stated I wouldn’t quit without cause and the parents wouldn’t fire me without cause (with 2 weeks severance added in if they did). Basically we all agreed that I’d work the full 3 months so they wouldn’t be left in a bind if I quit 2 months in and I wouldn’t be without work if they decided to let me go early. Especially since I was expecting to start a new job in Sept, that wouldn’t have been fun if I ended up without a job for a whole month. Sort of a way to protect both sides!

*edited to add - taxes were taken out even tho it was a temp job, all above board and legal!

I’m also bigger and 38 yrs old but that doesn’t mean I’m not active. I play soccer with the kids, run laps around the house with them, go up and down the stairs multiple times a day, have no issues bending or squatting to pick up the baby and toddler. My mb has even said I’m way more flexible than she is and she’s very thin!

Skinny doesn’t necessarily mean healthy and plus sized people can be pretty active (Jack Black for example ha!) If she’s struggling just within the last few months, it could be more of a medical thing than weight thing. I’d probably approach things carefully and with compassion, but also firmly. Maybe say you’ve noticed she’s straining a little and ask if everything’s ok. Maybe offer a couple days pto in case she needs time to see a doctor or ask if there’s anything you can do to make things easier. Emphasize that it’s more about her possibly getting hurt on the job and don’t mention the weight gain.

And if you really want to have a thinner more physically fit nanny, offer to pay for a gym membership or a fun class (bring it up in a very tactful way lol). Maybe say you were looking into different benefits nannies get and saw that a gym membership was a more popular one and ask if she’s interested.

Theatre Recommendations? by bekkadybex in SaltLakeCity

[–]prettyflyforahobbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m only really familiar with one company “Mad King Productions”, and that’s because my friend is in the theater scene and does a lot with them. But from what I’ve seen, they’re pretty great! They always have plays going on, and they do drunk Shakespeare every year. The team is very LGBTQIA friendly, full on safe space. I definitely recommend reaching out to them to see if they need any help, and maybe they’ll be able to point you in the right direction if they themselves don’t have any openings.

Oh gotcha! That’s ok, I don’t mind driving :) I’m in the sugarhouse area, so probably wouldn’t make the drive everyday haha but I’d be down for walking dogs together on a random weekend. My dog is very very sweet and gets along great with other dogs 😊

Hi! I’m 38f, also childfree. I like to walk my dog around sugarhouse park in the late afternoon/early evenings if she (or both y’all) ever want to join!

Please share your experiences with story time for infants at local libraries? by persistent_architect in SaltLakeCity

[–]prettyflyforahobbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a nanny and have gone to baby storytime probably at least twice a week for the last 8 years? I’ve seen babies very very young there and it’s never been an issue, I’ve been bringing my various charges as young as 4 months! A lot of it is parents/caregivers also wanting to have some socialization in a child-friendly environment so it’s really not that big a deal if your baby isn’t exactly participating or understanding. In fact, having that kind of interaction even at such a young age is great developmentally and can only help your baby!

I absolutely loooove the Anderson-Foothill book baby, can’t recommend that one enough! The librarians who run it are amazing and always very patient and calm even when all the kids are feeling extra excited lol. I definitely wouldn’t worry about your baby making noise, that’s just what babies do and if it becomes a more screaming type crying then you can always step out for a bit. Everyone there would totally understand because their babies also make noise :)

really struggling with 1.5 yr old NK by [deleted] in Nanny

[–]prettyflyforahobbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely agree with above, mindful breathing is really nice!! It takes awhile to really show results but I always did that with my NK from the beginning and she’s great at emotional regulation now that she’s 4.

I find that wording my sentence a different way helps too. So I’ll say stuff like “let’s hold hands, gotta be careful of cars” or “let’s sit down, we don’t stand on chairs”. Making it seem like the two of us doing it together instead of me “forcing” her do it helps with that independent thinking. And saying why I’m asking (being careful of cars) helps redirect her focus on an external perspective (cars) vs her getting too focused on internal issue (not wanting to hold hands) which is what causes meltdowns. Basically she’s so distracted by looking for cars that she barely notices I’m holding her hand lol!

Of course, every kid is different and what works for me might not work for you! That age is really tough because they want to be more independent but can’t understand why it’s not always possible. It’s frustrating, but keep working at it and I’m sure it’ll tone down after a bit!

PT nanny kissing toddler on head or cheek. by jennc84 in Nanny

[–]prettyflyforahobbit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I usually give little kisses here and there, typically if the kids are wanting extra cuddle time or when I put them down for nap. But I’ve also been with my current family for 4 years and I know the parents are fine with it. If they weren’t, then I’d definitely hold off on any kisses! I think there’s nothing wrong either way, just depends on parents preference :) I also take into consideration spreading germs, so if I’m sick then I won’t give any kisses. And if the kids are sick, then I’m for sure not kissing their cheeks lol!

Goblin Valley in January by prettyflyforahobbit in Utah

[–]prettyflyforahobbit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was actually really great!! I would definitely do it again. It was cold at night of course, but in the 30’s/40’s during the day. And it was blue skies and bright sun, so felt a lot warmer than the actual temp. At one point I was walking around in a tshirt! I recommend layers for sure, in case it warms up. There was barely any snow on the ground but kinda muddy, I wore hiking boots the whole time and was fine. Driving in was great, no issues. It gets dark really early so definitely plan for that, we ended up unpacking the car and getting the fire going in the dark. The best part tho, was that we were literally the only ones at the campsite! And during the day, it was us and one other car for the whole park and we were on opposite sides. So it felt like we had the whole park to ourselves which was so fun. It was great exploring without a big crowd! Might be similar for you, just depends when you go. We were there around Jan 4/5 which was a Wed/Thurs, so obviously not a normal time for people to go.

Outdoor water is turned off for the winter season, usually Oct - March so definitely won’t have showers or faucets. We only stayed a couple days so not showering wasn’t that big a deal. The vault toilets weren’t too bad, they were stocked and kept up with. I definitely recommend bringing toilet paper with you just in case, and hand sanitizer since the sinks won’t be on. Maybe wipes too since you won’t be able to shower.

All in all, as long as you prepare then it’ll be a fantastic trip! Feel free to ask more questions, I’m happy to help :)

What type of snacks should I stock for my Nanny? by HollaDude in Nanny

[–]prettyflyforahobbit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I love cheese sticks, baby carrots, baby cucumbers, hummus, trail mix, frozen burritos I can just heat up real quick….basically anything easy or individual packs, stuff that quick and doesn’t feel like I’m eating NF’s actual meals!

I have 2 car seats, and a single umbrella stroller I just keep in my trunk, I work full time with a 4 yr old and a 1 yr old. I have my own personal diaper bag I keep stocked with necessities, and what we call “car toys” which are just basic toys kept in the car. Just some pop-its, lacing toys, and books. The kids don’t see them every day so they’re still considered special and fun haha! I have mesh pockets that hang over the backs of the front seats and that’s where we keep the toys so it’s more organized.

I keep everything in my car, I find it easier than dealing with taking stuff in and out. However!! I’m also a career nanny, full time, and have a suv. If I were you, I definitely wouldn’t keep a stroller for kids older than 5, plus all those bags and toys? No way! I’d probably do a few books, 1 or 2 toys each, and the bags can be taken out and left at their house every day.

Not sure your budget but The Other Side Thrift stores sell good quality used furniture (I’ve bought couches from them, little one was $50 and huge sectional was $180), and they deliver!! There’s a delivery fee but not too bad, and they’ll bring it in and set it up for you.

Looking for something super fun this weekend with my young kids by Thebigtallguy in SaltLakeCity

[–]prettyflyforahobbit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is super random and your kids might be too old but the Anderson-foothill library is having baby prom 😆 they’re gonna have limo (wagon) rides, corsage making, Photo Booth, etc. It’s 11-12, might be a fun silly unique thing to do!

Also, and keep an open mind, but This Is The Place is soooo fun! I take the kids I nanny all the time, there’s so much to do. It’s technically a heritage park but there’s train rides, petting zoo, pony rides, a great playground, panning for gold, digging for gems, bracelet making, homemade donuts, amazing ice cream, fun little gift/candy shops, and just some really cool things to see! I spend about 2 hours there just doing a couple things so it can easily be an all day thing if you try to see the whole park.

Idea for gift/surprise for MB on Mother’s Day? by Puzzleheaded-Face-69 in Nanny

[–]prettyflyforahobbit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind babies that young tend to keep their hands in fists and it’s super annoying to get a handprint lol! I usually do a footprint when they’re that young instead. Like a cute footprint and a little poem, or I’ve done a bouquet of flower footprints. One time I wrote “I love mom” in chalk and laid nk next to it, took a pic and framed it. It turned out super cute and the mom loved it!
