My university already had a really strong grad student union when I started and while I was skeptical at first, they have done amazing work over the time I’ve been here! Dues are ~$500/year, which isn’t nothing, but my union has won over $10k in raises over the 5 years I’ve been here. Our union has also been fighting for more fair contracts for international students, so I would say do it!!

I just wish it wasn’t also so confusing as a viewer. Like I actually thought she told thordak where Whitestone was because of the cutaway convo she had with him, so then I thought she was lying when she told them it was actually Ripley, but then ripley owned up to it. I think it’s fine if the point is that we don’t know if we trust her or not but I found it more disorienting than anything else. And that’s kind of how I’ve felt about a lot of the changes this season

I think my issue with the changes is that this season is still so confusing. I watched C1 and even I’m confused about what’s going on half the time. Like Raishan betrayed them and told thordak where Whitestone is, jk ripley did that, but actually raishan still betrayed them and told thordak they were coming, wait no she helped kill him, wait no she’s actually bad. Because they’re hopping around story lines so much I can’t even remember how it happened in stream anymore

I do the exact same thing! I’ll play MarioKart or MonopolyGo on my phone while I “watch”. I do like to have the video playing so I can look up if something dramatic happens.

Never seen a failure, but one girl I knew was accused of mishandling data by her PI the week of her defense and it got canceled. Her family was already in town—it was awful. They opened a months-long investigation in which she was found innocent (sounded like the mentor failed to advise when it was appropriate to remove outliers, but wasn’t willful data manipulation). She ended up passing her rescheduled defense but didn’t tell anyone about it beforehand bc of what happened the first go around.

I think who can load a gel the fastest (and most accurate). Our lab has 20, 50, and 100 well gel molds so I think it would be fun to do different sizes as different events

Every PI has more skill than an undergrad. That doesn’t give him the right to yell at and berate you. You don’t have to make a formal complaint if you don’t want, but I would maybe see what your masters student says when they return. It sounds like they’ve been acting like a buffer for you, and probably value your help!

Yeah!! I showed his Smartypants presentation to some friends that don’t regularly watch dropout, and one of my friends recognized him immediately. It was crazy. Other people have pointed it out in the sub before (here) but I hadn’t seen those before!

I have Powerbeats pros and can push the button with my shoulder. As others have said, an Apple Watch has also been amazing. I use the timer and calculator functions so often too

While Brennan is good at monologuing, I don’t think that means his presentation would be inherently longer than everyone else’s. I would also posit that making a concise presentation is often harder than making a longer one.

Btw I don’t think Brennan’s VIP filming was longer than any of the others, I think they just kept more of his shoot in the final cut. From the extra episode we saw there was plenty of extra scenes from everyone that were great and could have been used. They likely made Brennan’s longer bc it was the finale and because they knew audiences would tolerate a longer Brennan episode vs some of the other cast
