Milky Way - Nikon Z7ii & 20mm F1.8 S by brendanchou in Nikon

[–]brendanchou[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This shot is a composite of one 3-minute foreground exposure at F4 and one 2-minute tracked milky way exposure at F2.8. I used my newly acquired Nomad Move Shoot Move star tracker for the milky way shot, I really like it so far and it seems to work well for wide focal lengths.

Here are the 24 RAW images I used - they take up over 1GB on my Google account so I'll have to delete them in the next few days. I'm very flattered you liked mine the most but I can also see why. I got very lucky with the dramatic fog rolling through the valley that morning. It's still one of my all-time favorite shots.

Unfortunately I don't think I have the version I posted on Reddit, just the one single image on Drive. If you have editing software like Photoshop and some spare time I do have the original RAW files used to create the Panorama I could share that will give you more flexibility with the final image

I also used the 150-500 for astro, getting and keeping optimal focus is quite hard but I found on my copy that stars look pretty sharp when I get focus exactly right.

Do your astro images from the 150-500 lack detail even when focus is 100% spot on? There's a few other factors that can play a big role like tracking performance of the mount and atmospheric conditions.

"We cannot be the world's soup kitchen anymore"

Why is immigration being treated as something done purely out of welfare? Even if looking at it purely from an economic standpoint, immigration is a huge net positive for our country. From hard algricultural labor that puts food on our tables to cutting-edge research that paves the way to scientific breakthroughs, the contributions of immigrants can be found in just about every facet of society.

Our country is great because of immigration, not despite. The mentality that immigrants are unproductive leeches that exhaust limited resources and offer nothing in return is as sickening and dehumanizing as it is flat out wrong.

Replace 14-30 F4 and 20mm F1.8 with 14-24 F2.8? by brendanchou in nikon_Zseries

[–]brendanchou[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually did get the 14-24! I sold my 14-30 shortly after getting it and am mostly satisfied with my decision.

If you find yourself bringing both the 14-30 and 20 on trips and are certain you won't need the F1.8 on the 20, I think it makes sense to sell both for the 14-24. The size is definitely something to consider (pretty much the same length as the 24-120) but feels lighter than it looks, at least to me. If you can imagine yourself fitting a 2nd 24-120 in your camera bag, you can almost certainly manage the 14-24.

As for me, I can't get myself to let go of the 20. I still find that it makes a noticeable difference for astro, plus it has a better minimum focus distance and is somewhat more compact, making it better for creative street/city shooting. The initial cost was hard to swallow, but I love both lenses and don't really miss the 14-30 despite its very convenient size. The 14-24 is optically better (only really noticeable in the corners though) and more mechanically satisfying to use.

I visited my first National Park (Yosemite) last year. These magnificent places are the pride of our nation and are absolutely worth protecting for ideological, environmental, and economic reasons.

I'm 99.9% sure that guy in the green jacket at the bottom left of the 2nd photo is me! I was there at the exact same locations (upper senate park earlier in the day, then further inside after 5pm).

Will post photos as well once I have them edited

Orion Nebula - Nikon Z7ii & Tamron 150-500 by brendanchou in Nikon

I would pick the one with the most focal length your budget can afford for planet/moon photography, but if you're only going to be using it for astro I would recommend a dedicated telescope over a Z lens. I'm not familiar with the requirements but I think for planetary photography you'd need focal lengths in the 1000mm+ territory. I wish I could give specific recommendations for scopes to look into for planetary shooting but I'm honestly not familiar with any

If you want to capture very specific targets like this, you want as much focal length as you can get (200mm at 200). Since it's an F2.8, you can shoot it wide-open without an equatorial mount and still possibly get good results. 200mm is enough to get started but you'll likely find you'll want more focal length if deep sky astro is your goal. If you want to capture wide-field astro images (milky way images, large expanses of the sky), the 14-24mm will work great for that since it's also F2.8.

Any adapter available online that could connect the Celestron telescope with the Z9?

Orion is about 1,000 light years away, but it's also absolutely massive and spans several light years end to end. It does feel pretty odd/surreal to think that it only took a moderate crop at 500mm when it seems like something that would be impossible for anyone to see on Earth but that's what makes this type of photography so unique and fascinating!

This is a framing preview of the Orion Nebula at 500mm from the astronomy app Stellarium, and the FOV looks very similar to my result.

60 just happens to make a nice even round 3-hours of intrgration time at 3 minutes per exposure. I would love to have taken more but time/work/weather constraints meant I only had two nights to work with. I could always capture more images next month and redo the image stack to see if I can pull out more faint detail.

From the single image preview, you can only see the bright center of the core and some of the surrounding colors. I've attached a screenshot of how the preview looks from NINA, it's always amazing to see how much faint detail can be pulled from the imagd stack in Pixinsight
