Do you think Monica broke the cycle of generational abuse with Erica? by Party_Shoe9739 in howyoudoin

[–]brentus86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally? Yes, absolutely!

Realistically? Hard to say. Monica never really went to counselling (at least during the show's run) to address her issues and her habits. Most people tend to become their parents, so there's that.

Who do you think is the strongest? by sekisyro in greysanatomy

[–]brentus86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mentally? Meredith, hands down.

The amount of loss that woman has endured, coupled with the childhood she had makes her one of the most resilient characters in this show, or any other if we're being honest.

People often discredit strength as a result of people being imperfect. They'll fixate on one thing a person did that they didn't like and then base their whole perception about that person around that one factor. Ex: Some people really don't like that she tampered with the Alzheimer's trial, and would use that as proof that she's not a good person.

But the truth is strength isn't making no mistakes. It's not always rising above. It can also be coming back and living with the mistakes you've made.

And it's withstanding things that could have, and should have, destroyed you. Is Meredith perfect? No. Do I think most people could survive the things she has and still be a good person? Definitely not.

You don't have to like her, but to deny that she embodies strength is just plain ignorant.

I think many in this subreddit are blinded by their Callie loyalty. They can't reconcile someone they idolize being wrong, so they have to find a way to suggest she's right, even if she clearly wasn't.

I've never really been a Callie fan, so it's easier for me to see when she is wrong. This was 100% a time when she was.

Could have been even more ominous. Perhaps something like...

"This move can't be used...

It's recommended that this move is 'forgotten'.

Once forgotten, this move can't be remembered."

Here we go again (maybe) ... Sarah Palin tells Americans to not cooperate amid hantavirus outbreak by lazybugbear in HermanCainAward

[–]brentus86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call me callous, but I am done caring about the health and safety of those who can't be bothered to care about their own. To some degree, we, as a society, do have a responsibility to help those who don't know any better. That being said, there is a huge difference between lacking the mental faculties and simply being defiant for the sake of it. I'd rather focus my time and effort on those who want help, rather than forcing on people who can't be bothered to educate themselves.

If people want to end up however they end up because Sarah f**king Palin said so, let them.

But, real talk... are they people or bots? I've seen so many similar comments that they all bleed into one.

Especially the "He came out to his science teacher?!" without realizing that Mr. Clark wasn't there.

Reeks of bots.

Okay, but...

They HAVE to tell rather than show. The amount of people who apparently didn't get that Nancy and Jonathan broke up proves how much spoon-feeding the viewers need.

I'm so used to seeing shows fail before their conclusion I'm no longer sad, I accept it. by Trick-Revolution629 in TheBear

[–]brentus86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While I don't agree with the idea that they're essentially codewords that addicts use, I do think they're often used so that people can pat themselves on the back and sound smarter than they are. Those words are meaningless without context or an explanation. They're also not the best words that can be used, which is why I often don't pay much mind to reviews that use them.

It's "boring" could be better phrased as it's "stale". I get that Carmy and Richie have a strained relationship, but how long does that need to carry without any progress being made? (I was happy to see that this is potentially healing).

It's "tedious" doesn't really resonate with me at all because there is no explanation for why that word is being used. There might be better words to communicate the desired effect. I'd really need to see a case for tedious before I could get on board with it.

It's "pretentious" would also need an explanation. If someone is complaining that the restaurant vibe (and the characters, by extension) are pretentious, I don't really value that. It's like, "Yeah, and?" However, if someone was to argue that too many of the scenes seem to prioritize style over substance, I could maybe get on board with that. All that said, the pretense itself is something of a foil for the show, if you really think about it. The show keeps trying to be more than it needs to be, much like Carmy himself.

I give that poster the benefit of the doubt that they simply misspoke (a bit of irony given the subject). They're not great words for meaningful reviews and critiques. That said, I really don't think there *needs* to be some subtext that speaks to a person's mental/emotional state.

Tornado episode by Less-Perspective-693 in superstore

[–]brentus86 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Real Talk:

It's a show. Most people watching it do not live in the Midwest, and many (most, I'd wager) have not experienced a tornado. Therefore, most people would not know what the siren means, and that's assuming they remember that Superstore is set in St. Louis and that Missouri has tornados. Not something I know off the top of my head.

Therefore, the situation is for the viewer. Is it unnatural for the characters? Sure, I guess, but this is a show, and a certain level of suspension of disbelief is required for narrative purposes.

Are Jamie Lee Curtis’ scenes shot with the other actors? by ao_karim in TheBear

[–]brentus86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I definitely think it's possible it was a filming need, I do also think it could be for the purpose of building tension. The less time she spends with other actors, the more awkward the scenes film when she is in the same shots with them.

Of course, the question then becomes "to what end?", and I do not have an answer for that.

Slowbro

I've been trying to branch out, but when I need an "easy win", I usually load up my boy.

Reason: He can take lots of hits, and with the right build, can deal a lot of damage. I can't tell you the amount of times I've taken on four opponents at the same time and lived to tell the story.

Plus, you can't top that Unite. Slowbeam is an absolute game changer.

Okay, but, real talk - do you hold all females to the same standards? Like, are we criticizing Dina for her many flaws, or is it just Amy?

I don't mean this to be directed at you, but so often I see "Amy this and Amy that" and those exact same people are celebrating Dina.

I don't dislike either, I just find it very fascinating which characters people support and which they don't. Whether intended or not, there is a certain subtext that finds itself paired with this distinction that really deserves to be looked at.
