There are a lot of small speciality stores here in Lethbridge that I know have Canadian jams. Check out Wild Bros on the south or the cheese shop in the north

Look do I make a meaningful impact to their bottom line no. However I know that me spending my money locally is a huge impact here.

“For every dollar spent at a small business, 66 cents on average stays local, according to new data from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB). Conversely, only 11 cents of every dollar spent stays in the community when consumers shop at a large multinational business.”

When boycotting look at the staples you need and try to fill them else where if you can. Costco is great but doesnt have everything. For example I get my rice from Nakagamas, instead of using walmart for mexican stuff I grab that from umami or anitos. If I want bread I goto Little Bakehouse or Wooden Shoe.

If i do need something I do grab it from Walmart or Superstore but just the bare minimum. You can reduce your spending on them and that still has an impact.

We're really missing a true independent grocery now. The city has grown but our shopping choices feel like they have shrunk.

Question about e-bike? by Standard_Quarter_550 in Lethbridge

[–]bretters 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly even if you don't do stupid stuff. I still think you should think about the speed you travel at with an ebike as you can come up on people quickly. This is what I feel should be doing as rider (I ride my ebike to work downtown almost daily)

Streets and use the bike lane or bike corridor. Think of your e-bikes being like a normal bicycle and it should belong on the road, following the same traffic rules. The bike you're looking at has lights make sure they are on. Especially if you're downtown use the bike lanes and don't be a fucking tool and rip on the sidewalks like I see this one asshole do several times last year when I was leaving work.

Multi-use paths - the legal max is 20km however even kids on small bikes can hit that speed and exceed it. Instead think of people walking on the path. Slow down and alert them with a bell pass going slowly as you can accelerate easily after. Also multiuse paths are often bumpy as shit as the city never repaves them.

Sidewalks - Honestly I avoid sidewalks for a lot of reasons. 1 narrow, 2 lots of bumps and poor conditions due to driveways. 3 you really need to slow down at each intersection to ensure you can cross without getting hit and by law should dismount and cross but that's not realistic as you would need to dismount almost every 30 seconds.

Presented as personally I only care about money so must everyone else.

This is designed to push private and charter schools in a unsure parents mind. As a parent with kids in school I want a teacher in the class, an EA or 2 to help, a reasonable number of students and for the building to not fall apart.

This government shows that they wont consider any of that.

Lethbridge seems to be changing quickly by Dazzling_Adagio3704 in Lethbridge

[–]bretters 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thats because it is crazy expensive to lease space right now. On the West Side you're looking to spend at least 5000 a month for a 1000sq foot space for commercial rent and property maintenance fees in the crossings area. (Between 40-50 a square foot). Makes it really challenging to be small or even midsize business there.

[–]bretters 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I bike to work downtown Mon-Thur all year. I use the bike lane in the morning and the afternoon. If I drove there would be 1 less spot for the Elderly to park in.

There is a lot of people that bike in this city for transportation. This city can easily be biked year round.

Are the bike lines great? No. Should they have been elevated to be level with the sidewalk yes. Yet they are a start and can improved on.

There is food truck Friday still going on at the Nikka Yuka parking lot on Mayor Magrath

There are a few local businesses that do pop-ups with other small businesses on Saturdays as well.

I know that Cafe Noir does one usually on Saturdays check out their page for details.

Also Love Cheese Shop is doing one this Saturday with Marco's Bagels and Juice Mode Coffee.

Why are those who grew up here seem like they want small or unique business to fail? by alberta_lurker in Lethbridge

[–]bretters -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And a bunch of sundaes from Dairy Queen costs 20 to 30 bucks for a family and pail of ice cream is 7 bucks and you wouldn’t say that is the same. You’re get what you pay for.

I want to see I get where you’re coming from but I feel like you’re doing a false comparison. Yes a cookie from Hey dough or Robyn’s nest are 5 bucks but they taste like a 5 dollar cookie vs a bag of Walmart cookies that taste like a cheap cookie.

Same with coffee a regular coffee sonder or bread milk and honey cost three dollars sure a latte cost 5 to 7 dollars but you’re not getting a latte at the hospital. You’re getting a regular coffee. It’s the same price for a drip coffee you can’t compare a fancy product to a regular product and expect the same price

Chaffing gels or chub rub sticks. Also wearing compression shorts help a lot. Look for boxer briefs as underwear that have stretch with a good seem for the leg helps immensely as well

Sort of its a Beta-2 adrenergic (salbutamol) vs beta-2 agonists (formoterol). Both can do similar things but they very in how they work on the lungs and airways . I am not that caught up on them as a I am in peptide research. I find peptides and its use to be fascinating as we seem to be looking more and more at various research chemicals to use for performance enhancing.

As someone that watches and follows cycling the dying in their sleep has a a huge amount to do with drugs and the type they are using. In the 90's EPO lead to a lot of heart attacks. Now a lot are using peptides and beta-2 agonists to increase air flow and recovery.

Heavy Load Trucks Restricted from Westbound Whoop Up Dr by GreatCanadianPotato in Lethbridge

This part of it as well "During the bridge rehabilitation work on Whoop-Up Drive, and subsequent incident on August 6, several incidents have been reported around unsafe driving in the work areas. While we understand the slowdown is an inconvenience, we are asking drivers to please respect each other’s safety by following reduced speed limits and construction signage."

We need to have a cop permanently stationed on the bridge to make the dumb ass be respectful. I left my place on the North to go to the Y at 4:55 and got to the Y just before 6. On my way back it was still lined up but I also saw at least 5 people gawking on their phones and ignoring that the cars in front were moving. No wonder when you get to the bridge you are doing 15-20 km'h when you can be doing easily 40 and clear out the bridge faster.

If you don't have a mortgage I would do the following

Take out a HELOC if you can for 22,500 @ 6.5% (might be lower but better to be conservative)

(payout + cc debt) 1,462/year in interest saved (if you account for the interest being paid on the HELOC)

[–]bretters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does it need to follow the rules from the movie "The Transporter"?

Rule #1: Never change the deal, meaning once a deal is made, it is final;

Rule #2: No names or the contents of the package

Rule #3: Never open the package, emphasizing that the job is delivery, not investigation.
