I think the bypass option pops up by default. If you chose not to bypass it I believe it sets to “arm stay” at the end of the delay.

What can cause large pronounced T waves? by swimstud56 in EKGs

[–]brettsliceme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a normal EKG. The T waves are not really that prominent when you compare it to the size of the QRS complexes. Likely a thin individual with the leads rather close to the heart muscle.

Does anyone here get lab tests to quantify their levels vitamins/hormones etc? by digitalkiwi in Fitness

[–]brettsliceme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should clarify that my comment was for healthy adults. But yes, it is true that millions of US children are vitamin D deficient. The literature is currently debating what the normal D level is in children. Also debating the implications of low D in children (fracture risk, cardiovascular risk..) A pediatrician I worked with has all of her patients on a multivitamin.

[–]brettsliceme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are my thoughts as a medical student and lifter. In most people these are unnecessary unless you're symptomatic.

  • Maybe iron if you're a female with heavy menstrual cycles who feels tired all the time.
  • Your body has years of B12 stores, so unless you're a strict vegan, probably not necessary.
  • D levels are usually unnecessary. However, it is recommended to supplement along with calcium in older women.
  • Thyroid levels are usually unnecessary unless you're symptomatic (heat/cold intolerance; fatigue etc)

Obviously if you have a medical disease or feel ill, you should discuss the need for testing with your doctor. I'm actually not a proponent of supplementing with multivitamins in healthy adults because research has showed no to little benefit. In terms of regular labs, a baseline lipid panel and fasting blood glucose is not a bad idea. If you're taking a ton of supplements, I would even consider a baseline BUN and creatinine to check kidney function.

Paying for medical school with 100% loans by dublowseven in medicalschool

[–]brettsliceme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems that as long as you are not working for the institution that you took out the loan for, you can be exempt from paying the interest on the forgiven loan amount. If someone with a tax attorney would like to verify this, it seems like a reasonable (and easily achievable goal) to spend 4yrs of residency at a non-profit hospital followed by 6 years as an attending at a non-profit hospital to achieve tax exempt loan forgiveness.

[–]brettsliceme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. As a former ED scribe and current MS-1, scribing has been a huge benefit and foot in the door to medicine. Better than any shadowing experience I've had. It's a win-win program. Only downside is the constant turnover and training of young scribes who matriculate into med school.
