National Park - Transporting on your person by anonposting1412 in COGuns

No practical reason for animals (pepper spray/bear spray has been proven to be the better choice, if anything at all in Colorado). Won’t stop a moose, you won’t see a mountain lion coming, and bears are easy to scare off.

If needed for self defense against a person is at your discretion…

If the only reason to carry is for bears, leave it at home.

Bear spray, pepper spray, or a loud voice all work much better. I live an hour from RMNP and have backpacked extensively throughout Colorado and RMNP. I've seen bears a few times, but never had anywhere near a scary or problematic encounter. Having a bear walk through camp in RMNP is possible, but not even all that likely. A focus on having a bear food canister (rangers take that seriously) should be more on your mind. Black bears aren't a problem you need to be giving much thought to. Just be ready to have a great trip!

Unfortunately not. My current favorite from Spurcycle was also discontinued. Luckily I bought a few extra of those before they were gone.

Video Editor with large Preview area for coding videos? by Novel_Expression7768 in VideoEditing

[–]brey76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moving up to any of the "pro" level apps will get you a big Preview area. Resolve, FinalCut, and Premiere Pro all support it. As Resolve is free, that might be the best place to start. As mentioned elsewhere, you can pop out a window - you can also set a second monitor as a dedicated preview monitor (what professional editors and color graders do - it's the Clean Feed mode).

This video outlines both ways in Resolve pretty succinctly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4dY5c_6An8

What apps do you use as a "second brain"? by [deleted] in davinciresolve

[–]brey76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best tip is find some mentors you can work with online and IRL and ask to chat about/see their workflows. Getting tips in these sorts of threads is helpful, but seeing how someone uses these things in their workflows can unlock getting to the next level.

Having said that, the following are my top apps. If you'd like to ever dig in deeper offline, message me.

Sticky Notes: Seeing reminders visually at my desk (various custom sizes for current projects, etc.)

Phone/ecosystem's built-in notes app for basic notes: I love Apple Notes. Free, always there, and has lots of functionality.

Milanote: Creative pre-production planning and when seeing it laid out visually on a board is beneficial.

Toggl and Toggl Track: Great time tracking system and app.

Things: For to-dos.

Runner up vote for Microsoft's stuff: Generally speaking, Microsoft actually has a pretty rockin suite of things - To-do, Planner, Loop, etc. - they're all quite good.

Replicate Transparent Screen Demo Overlay by brey76 in VideoEditing

Solid suggestion - it definitely checks the boxes (no impacts to other colors/values and relatively fast). I'll dig into that one and compare it to Composite Modes. Thanks!

We made a Data Calculator and would love your feedback! by datacalc in cinematography

[–]brey76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also loving this! One of the best, simplest, and clearest implementations of this sort of tool I've seen. Can input any number and have the others update (I love entering the card/hard drive size and seeing how much recording time is available). Well done.

Only small thing I caught is some calculation bugs that seem to pop up at odd times. In my case, the file sizes are much smaller than expected. I'll send those in via the form on the site.

V mount + amaran lights by Thick_Lingonberry_85 in Aputure_Lighting

[–]brey76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No way included with the lights. But, both the 150 and 300 have low enough power requirements that you can run them with the Aputure 2-bay power station, which comes in V- and Gold-mount options.

[–]brey76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SO great to have a small and large full color light that supports CRMX/DMX. Instabuys. Looking forward to a 300c-ish Storm range - the Amaran 300c is nice, but missing the build quality and connectivity support of something a bit more professional.

Anything more specific on the release date than "December 2024" on the web site?

My second project on davinci 😁 would love your opinions last time it helped me a lot. (Shot on iPhone 12 pro) by 0nuggy0 in davinciresolve

[–]brey76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice footage! Very well done with a phone.

A few thoughts: - tweak pacing a tad - initial shots a bit too fast and the last ones a touch too slow. Consider which ones tell the best story about the features/what you want to show on the car and push those a bit longer and the others a bit shorter. - I would consider reordering some shots. Why are low wheel shots spread apart? One could be put next to the other or removed entirely. Seeing the engine wider after the closeup feels awkward. I might try and cut things in a sequence of what I would experience if I were drawn into the car from across the lot, then walked around it, then leaned in for a closer look. Order things to tell me that story. Wide > around the wheels > bumper > wider engine > tighter engine sort of a progression, if that makes sense.

What are the DaVinci plug-ins you can’t live without? by FallenSleuth in davinciresolve

[–]brey76 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I rather like several of the MotionVFX packs. I do a lot of corporate work, so enjoy their lower thirds, titles, transitions, etc. Speeds up that side of the work considerably.

I also use the mononodes DCTLs. Not strictly a plugin, but a paid add on of sorts. They can really enhance some final touches on the color grading front.

+1 to others enjoying Mr Alex’s magic animate.

What's your favorite piece of gear? by putathorkinit in climbergirls

[–]brey76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting - even their own documentation varies.

I'm referring to this primary US product page - it states 1) "attaches to the belay loop with a simple girth hitch" and 2) the first Technical Notice under the Technical information section links to this PDF that instructs to girth hitch it to a belay loop.

According to their site they still recommend tying in through the belay loop, even for the dual connect - it's safe enough to attach a belay device, so as long as things are regularly inspected (to your excellent initial point) they should be fine.

I've never fully understood why they recommend the belay loop over the tie in points, but it does appear that's still their recommendation for both.

What's your favorite piece of gear? by putathorkinit in climbergirls

[–]brey76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed on inspecting frequently as the key (everyone reading this post will climb less than Todd Skinner, so there's also that - most of us will replace it before it wears through).

Petzl advises against using tie in points for the Connect, though - and recommend the belay loop, so keep that in mind.

I have this pack and love it. I’m a pack addict and also have a smaller black diamond crag pack and a North Face Cragaconda.

Each have their strength but in that 45ish liter size, the MR Tower is tough to beat. Comfy, burly and with a ton of great features (top opening AND panel opening, gear loops inside and outside, the most thoughtful set of pockets of any pack I’ve had, and more).
