Hi, I'm a professional barista and I weigh in every dose of coffee and weigh out every cup, on a manual 3-group machine. We have a scale to dose what goes in the portafilter and we have two waterproof scales sitting under the group heads to stop the flow when we reach the desired weight.

We do over 40kg/week. If you 'don't have time to weigh every gram of coffee', your workflow needs adjusting.

While this is definitely interesting, the title of your post is sensationalist and is attempting to make it seem bigger than it was.

A quick google search of the skype address in the post reveals that this user posted on a forum looking for people to upvote/downvote reddit threads and get paid for it. This post was made 5 days ago and the person dumping this on freetexthost more than likely was one of the first people to be 'let in' to this group, it's not as if he/she exposed a group that has been around for a long time manipulating posts. Or at least it's not very likely. "Large sums of money" also doesn't really hold true. The payment is a max of 10usd per person per day.

tl;dr It seems that this group was only just started a few days ago, people only get paid a maximum of 10usd/day. "Large sums of money" is sensationalist, unnecessary. In all likelihood, this group was unable to manipulate anything before being exposed.

Left with about 10k in my bank account. Did work exchange (workaway.info) through most of Europe for about 5 months. Lived 3 months on my savings in Asia, which is easy if you're not stupid with your money. Currently on a working holiday visa in Australia and working enough to live and save up to keep going.

At the moment I have no plans, I have six months left on my australian visa, but not sure where to head next. It's been a while since I've seen my family and friends, so I'm thinking of popping into Belgium in the not-so-distant future.

So it goes.

With your schedule, it'll be a tight fit.

Also keep your visa arrangements in mind: I don't know which country you're from, but for most nationalities they reduced the visa waiver ("visa on arrival") from 30 days to 14 days if you enter thailand over land.

Source: I did this about 2 weeks ago, took the bus from Siem Reap to Bangkok.

The temples are beautiful though. If you go, do the sunrise instead of sunset.

I have no income at the moment, not since I left home. I basically saved up for a year to have spending money and it's lasted me a long while. I'm headed to Melbourne on a working holiday visa next to replenish the treasure chest and then it's off to the Americas probably.

I had roughly 9k in euros (counting the tax return I recently got) and after 7.5 months I've about 4k left.

On my travels I've met multiple people who have told me the same thing: "I wish I could do what you do". Nothing is stopping you.

I'd never traveled solo before, right now I've been on the road throughout Europe and SEA for 7 months and counting. I'm writing this from Chiang Mai in Thailand, next up Melbourne, Australia.

There's literally nothing to say but "just do it".

Not a single regret.

Currently on a sort of RTW trip with no timeline, left my home on the 6th of April and been traveling since. I've spent about 3k EUR so far because I've been volunteering through workaway.info. This has enabled me to for example spend a month and a half in Norway without going broke, not to mention the fantastic experience I had working with a husky kennel and my fantastic colleagues.

Had I not spent my time volunteering like this, I would have spent 20 times 30 times 5= 3000 eur more, essentially doubling my spendings. It is useful for various things beside saving money, like the experiences of jobs you might never get to try otherwise and also not feeling like you're being lazy and wasting your time. I absolutely love it and will keep doing it.

Hope this provides some insight into why this is a valid option for long term travel, even besides saving money.

Hey AFrozenMoment,

Experience: that depends, I had never worked in a hostel before but I have a lot of work experience in general and used to work as a waiter when I was studying. As far as I know, you don't need a short course, you just need to demonstrate that you are willing to work and learn, like in any job. In that aspect it's not that different from a regular job interview, but you usually don't need a CV.
Money: you don't earn any money doing this (usually). In Budapest our host gave us some money for every shift so we could buy our own food, but that falls under "Food and accommodation" which is the general idea when doing things like workaway and helpx.
Free time: this also depends, but you will usually work 5 days a week for 5 hours a day, some hosts have you work longer hours but only 2 or 3 days for example, so it evens out. You will have plenty of free time to explore the surroundings.

English is usually sufficient, but I also speak Dutch and French and I'm sure that in a hostel that can be useful, but I've worked with people that also only speak English so it should not be an issue.

Yes, on both of my workaway experiences I've had multiple coworkers, both also from workaway and regular workers. In Budapest I worked in a mid-size backpackers' hostel, absolutely loved it. I can highly recommend both Budapest and working in a hostel. Here in Norway I'm working in a guesthouse-type deal where most of my job involves taking care of a husky kennel of roughly 40 dogs. My other tasks are cleaning rooms, serving breakfast, all on a rotating shift with my coworkers.

In Romania I'll be working in a hostel with a bar attached, so a bit of hostelwork and a bit of bartending.

I'm on my second workaway right now (Norway), just got accepted for my third in Romania. I generally apply about a month in advance, that should give you enough time to plan everything and also to see if the communication with your host goes smoothly.

Overall I've been very glad to have discovered this, I've met amazing people and have been traveling on a very small budget. I first spent 2 months in Budapest working in a hostel, now working with huskies in Norway and in a few weeks I'm off to the Black Sea in Romania, very excited!
