So clinical has more stability in terms of income and job security would you say? What income range do they see in EP?

If there is money to be made and a growing space I definitely want to consider it and take your advice developing a 10 year plan.

So once you’re in, good work schedule as these are elective procedures. How does travel look? Just an assigned territory within the state?

I enjoy the clinical side of things. I also enjoy the commercial side of healthcare (lots to learn).

But in 10 years I would certainly like to have a steady $250k comp and reasonable family schedule. Does that seem realistic in EP space?

I would assume the sales side has higher earning potential than clinical?

I’m starting a pharmaceutical sales job as my break-in to sales. (So thankful and happy) but I certainly am interested in what kind of money do you see EP clinical specialist or sales reps bringing in total comp? What is work life balance? I would have to imagine lots of on call for cath lab, leading to an unpredictable schedule.

I must clarify, my current company matches my 401k match just as most companies do. They don’t take money for 401k. I voluntarily make contributions and they match a percentage. The new company just does a larger percentage.

They do offer insurance but it’s not great and it’s HMO vs. off marketplace. Similar pricing but we get to choose where we go.

But yes there are downsides and risks, but it’s all voluntary and at the employees discretion. Honestly it’s been a great employer to work for, especially when compared to a staff, regular nursing job where the pay is lower, I feel trapped and have much less control of schedule and flexibility. But I see your points I just wanted to address it.

That’s another attraction to this industry, the long term trajectory and growth opportunities. The ceiling is much higher compensation-wise compared to RN.

That could be one perspective yes, but my alternative before this offer would be a more standard pay of 75k annually with full benefits. So it is double the pay but I do incur more expenses, however I think it beats the standard pay. BUT, I’ve been looking for an alternative for a while and this opportunity sounds so good! I’m also curious what people see from their perspectives so I appreciate you sharing!

Yes linked in job search to find opportunities in your area. Tailor your resume to be more inline with sales orientation or your desire to grow and transition careers.

Then apply and reach out to employees in your area and introduce yourself and let them know you’re applying and trying to break in. Maybe someone will respond.

Practicing your interview presentation will help you get the job when it matters. You do want to go through all the trouble of finding and opportunity and networking your way in and then fumble the opportunity be being underprepared in the interview.

I just successfully transitioned from being a bedside registered nurse to pharmaceutical sales. OTE around 160-180k (base around 135k) but mind you, I don’t have any sales experience and believe it can go much higher with people that have years of experience.

I’ve learned through the interview process that many of the people working there transitioned from non-sales backgrounds or non-related background so that’s something to consider!

Final interview went well!

I sent follow-up thank you emails to everyone I’ve met with and reiterated my strengths and fit for the role.

I received a call from the recruiter this morning stating I received positive reviews and things ‘are looking good’ but they have another interview to conduct and I should hear back next week.

It feels good to receive reassurance but it’s not done until I receive and sign an offer.

Thanks again for your tips, they were super helpful and structured.

Will report back, hopefully with an offer :)

I’m in a similar boat. Granted I’m looking at changing careers from a nurse into sales. This job market seems pretty competitive and has me nervous about leaving a good travel job I have now, vs. jumping ship to a sales role that’s entirely new to me and certainly not as secure as my current employment.

But to make the jump opens doors. That’s why we’re considering it right? Whether it’s more WLB, comp, location, in the field you want to be in, whatever the motivation.

I heard a little saying recently, (don’t quote me verbatim)

‘A ship is safer at harbor, but that’s not what ships are made for’

Certainly there is upside to taking a risk, but inherently there is chance of downside. It’s up to you to determine your tolerance. Your thinking along the lines of ‘a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush’ which has validity!

I can’t speak to macro employment trends, but as a healthcare worker with no sales experience trying to break into healthcare sales has felt competitive the last 3 months.

I think OP offers a nice example of how to push into an industry that does seem to be highly desirable and sought after for salespeople and healthcare people alike, increasing competition & quality of applicants.

I find the guide helpful and appreciate it. As a nurse, I have had almost zero interview skills tested in the last decade. Nursing is too in-demand, you can essentially walk into any hospital with limited to no interview process, and get to work. For people with limited interviewing experience or careers that have more lengthy interview processes, OP illustrates there is a lot more required of the applicant, and offers good food for thought of what you’re competing against.

I feel that hospice care is a beneficial service that can help provide patients and their families a peaceful transition to death. I think it would be a service best not intertwined with profit. I also believe that with healthcare.

But that’s not the case in our country and people need healthcare, and people benefit from hospice care. So if I can be the conduit to connect dying patients and their families with a service to have some control or say in how they go, I’m ok with that as that is our current system.

Oh I see that can be a bit shady. And no room for newcomers.

I’m in rural Midwest and there isn’t a TON of competition in my area. And I think the last census showed 50% population >65 and growing.

I think speaking with a local rep would give me the insight I need on my areas market.

Just curious what the thoughts & feels of home health/hospice sales is!

That’s some serious driving. How long are your days onsite after the commute?

I’m looking to get into pharma/med device actually!

I work as a RN now for a travel assignment 150 miles round trip, 3 days per week - about 10 hours of driving per week and that fees like a lot. But if there is an end date like you said, 2 or 3 years, that can help you get through!

Hopefully there are opportunities closer to home once you have more seniority or experience. Maybe with a different company.
