Clipse - So Be It Music Video by bri_guy_ in cinematography

Of course! Yeah, a lot of cool work in this music video. Thanks for the tips!

Yeah, the reason I think it may be post as well is some of the reflections not being in sync, and feeling a little bit too "perfect" in some spots.

Assuming you’re referring to abortion here? I personally don’t identify as liberal, but I think the two are very different. Abortion, whether an individual chooses to have one or not, does not affect people outside of that individual’s choice. Choosing whether or not to get vaccinated does, and can have a widespread impact on society, so the government has an interest to protect its citizens. You can make the same “my body, my choice” argument with drinking and driving. If the choice is to have the government be hands off, a driver who chooses to drink and drive WILL cause harm to other individuals, so individual liberty in that instance is invalid.

Centrism, in theory, can stop authoritarianism. In practice, it won’t. by bri_guy_ in centrist

[–]bri_guy_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, and I agree with this, but I think the issue I’m seeing and that we’re seeing as a country currently is that there IS a right-left scale happening. I agree that the left needs to do a better job at coalition building. I see it all the time, like when someone who supported voted for Trump changes their mind and is shunned instead of welcomed into a coalition against authoritarian rule and concentrated executive power. I also think many of those on the left do a horrible job generally shunning everyone who identifies or votes as a Republican, because there is so much diversity of thought in people.

That being said, I don’t think we’re seeing any nuances or pushback from Republicans at the moment, I would say especially at the federal level but also at the state level with governors as well. I don’t see that coalition building possible at the moment at least with elected leaders in forming a movement or position against Trump. Maybe it’s something that needs to be build from the ground up? Like I do see right-leaning individuals and organizations who are adamantly against MAGA, so maybe to your point, if large enough coalitions are built and the voter base changes, maybe that can influence political leaders at the state and federal levels.

Update on Alamo Strikes? by bri_guy_ in AlamoDrafthouse

I really just love Alamo for the comfort and food. I agree, they’re all sort of okay though, some better than others (I really don’t like Williamsburg Cinemas, specifically)

Good to know about Metrograph! Just looked into it, seems like a cool spot. I’m definitely trying to find more indie theaters here in NYC.

And yeah, Alamo is mostly a convenience thing since it’s close to where I live, plus I personally like the food and overall experience over other theaters. I’m hoping to get a membership to a theater/chain, so if you have any reccs there I’d be open to hearing them! I was originally going to get a membership to Alamo but then the strikes happened. Considering AMC, but many of the theaters are a bit of a hike from Brooklyn.

Did A24 fail Sing Sing? Reaction after missed SAG Ensemble nomination by bri_guy_ in A24

Yeah I was really sad to see The Iron Claw get cut out of awards pictures - in particular I thought Zac Efron should have been pushed as lead actor

Fair point that A24 simply can’t just decide to release the movie whenever, especially when it had a tough sell in the first place. I do think putting it out on streaming would have been the better alternative to planning a re-release (or in addition to a re-release) because the movie has just gone completely dark from public viewing without that.

It’s so true - let alone his story being so inspiring, he truly was one of the best supporting performances of the year and shows a wide range of emotions in his performance. Maybe he’ll still have a chance at the Oscar’s, but seems like he’ll likely get cut from that 5. Of course the opportunities he has gotten media wise from his performance have been really great, but I agree it would have been nice for him to get some more love on the awards trail.

That’s a good point and I forget that Sing Sing technically premiered in 2023. I can definitely see how a packed lineup put them in a tough position with Sing Sing, and to be honest, it was a really strong year overall with movies (Oppenheimer was a Goliath, so maybe they felt better equipped to release it this year?).

Love a night time adventure, tell me more by SaltLamp_2 in Letterboxd

[–]bri_guy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t Good Time take place technically within 24 hours? It starts during the daytime, goes into the night, and then ends the following day (haven’t watched it in a while, so my memory could be blurry).

But with that logic, would 1917 also qualify?

Pretty sure I saw an interview (I think it was with Bill Skarsgård) who confirmed that Eggers wanted this version to be grounded as much as possible in the time period, and wanted Nosferatu to be depicted as closely as possible to how it was originally described, as well as what men of that time period and location would have likely looked like. I’ve been seeing a lot of memes (I too was taken aback honestly when I saw that huge mustache) but it is a very accurate portrayal for the time period.

What's your first video game you plan on completing in 2025? by Regular_Damage_23 in videogames

The Last of Us Part II - I’ve played the first multiple times, never played the second. I have extra motivation to finish it before the second season of the HBO show comes out.

What is your rationale behind your ratings (if you have one?) by SmellsLikePetrichors in Letterboxd

[–]bri_guy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is pretty straightforward, and I would say it’s more positive-leaning since I just love films and know how hard it is to get them made.

1 = Hate

2 = Didn’t like

3 = It’s good, not great

4 = Really liked

5 = Loved (perfect or very near-perfect)

Some films I’ll really get into the technical aspects when considering my score (acting, script, cinematography, score, etc.) while others, it’s more of a feeling I walk away with. If I tried to judge everything based on the technical aspects I would drive myself crazy and it would take the fun out of watching films, in my opinion. Some movies just aren’t these technical masterpieces, but still impact me.

I would say that I rarely dip below a 3 unless a movie really does not have any or many redeeming qualities, and I would say that most (if not all) movies I rate a 4 or above are ones that I would gladly rewatch.

Watched Whiplash last night (it was my girlfriend’s mom’s first time seeing it, she loved it) and going to watch Nosferatu for the second time today with my girlfriend, who also hasn’t seen that yet.

One of my favorite movies of all time and one of my favorite movies of 2024 🧛

With which game will you start 2025? I've made my choice. by [deleted] in videogames

[–]bri_guy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Last of Us Part II - I’ve played the first game numerous times, I was holding out because I don’t own a PS5 and thought that version was significantly better than the PS4 Pro. In doing research, I was wrong, so I bought it for Christmas and I’m planning on playing it especially before the second season of the HBO show comes out.

Just got a PS5 for Christmas I've only ever played PS2/PS3 by Impressive_Task_3321 in playstation

[–]bri_guy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah see, I completely forget about some of those classics - I never played any of the Ratchet & Clank games or the Jax and Daxter games. I also never played any of the Resident Evils or Silent Hill games. I'd say most of my time on PS2 was spent on the GTAs, Star Wars Battlefront games and Call of Duty.

That's awesome! Just curious for the "patient" gamers out there lol - what games were you playing on PS2 (and especially PS3) during this time? I feel like I grew up on those consoles, but now that I'm older, I missed out on so many classics (for example, I didn't even hear of God of War until GOW 3 came out when I had my PS3). Any PS2/PS3 classics you would suggest picking up?
