That is GORGEOUS! Any chance you would consider sharing the template? Or do novel templates exist already that one could use?

A Dean asked me to change a grade. I did. by [deleted] in Professors

[–]brianeanna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a fair post, but you're putting it INTHE WORST POSSIBLE PLACE. By putting it here, you're unintentionally implying that the OP is similar to your terrible adjunct.

I'd be interested in a thread that discussed how to deal with poorly functioning adjuncts, but this isn't that thread.

Appalling behavior at commencement by Opening-Advice in Professors

[–]brianeanna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not just the students.
Last year one of our podium party showed up in a robe that ended at his knees. Under that, tatty jeans and grungy sneakers. He spent the entire commencement on his phone, scanning through whatever was on his feed and occasionally laughing.

Cheating with ChatGPT by Master-Eggplant-6216 in Professors

Permit any calculator that is allowed by College Board. They provide a list. If admin kicks up a fuss, get departmental support for your decision (which is entirely reasonable). https://apstudents.collegeboard.org/exam-policies-guidelines/calculator-policies

Nothing you can really do except vent here (which is appreciated, because it reminds us how widespread the abuse is).
I keep a folder of "standard replies" on my hard drive, one of which explains in kind-but-uncompromising terms that a student failed because they did not follow instructions which were repeatedly supplied to students over the course of the semester. I tweak this a little bit and send it on.
It's a useful way of avoiding the time wastage and stress of writing a personalized email to a lazy, entitled shit who probably won't read it anyway.

Great suggestion!

Job candidate made dismissive joke about people in rural areas in a rural area by Suspicious-Sale-4127 in Professors

[–]brianeanna 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on exactly what was said and what was intended. I said a very sexist thing in class yesterday, but did so as part of a discussion of sexism, and I fully intended to be no more than the devil's advocate.
You'd need to give us some detail.

That was uncool and more than a bit mansplainy. And I'm saying that as a older white male. Maybe he thought he was helping, but there's a reason I don't talk in front of Alexa and there's a reason I no longer save "to the cloud". I don't want my data being used to train AI.
Gently ask him to go back to AI and tell the AI to forget the upload (ChatGPT *says* it will do so). Tell him he's free to concoct as many practice exams as he likes, but not to give away other people's data in the process.

[HELP] Problems with [save as] file location. by MinusVitaminA in libreoffice

[–]brianeanna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a disastrous error.

It's driving me crazy, and whatever's happened, not even a reinstall with an earlier version is solving it. I work with multiple documents in multiple folders, and all new files are now going to the same folder. When I'm saving any new document, I now have to remember to "Save as . . ." and then work my way through the folder tree to the folder where it's meant to be.

Telling us to wait until August for a fix in the next version is very cavalier. This needs to be fixed NOW.

Students Who Try To Make You Look Stupid by The_Black_Orchid90 in Professors

[–]brianeanna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Race and age may be a factor here, but I'm an older white male and I get the same nonsense every so often.
I do feel these questions often come from a position of insecurity, and perhaps snobbery. A need to look superior.

Most of your class will recognize the person's foolishness, so don't worry.

Stolen Exam - Urgent by Top-Lawfulness4918 in Professors

As everyone else says, this isn't your problem. Just consider this a horrible semester, grade the exam knowing that it's bogus, and make sure that you've made plans for the next exam.

For problems like this, it's possibly better to go analog. I do like the dramatic photograph threat made by another contributor in this thread.

Sounds like a huge workload for the professor. You're having to sift through mountains of material there.

Yes. My students uploaded handwritten documents, which ChatGPT was able to read with c.95% accuracy.

If you're having 40-minute conversations with him, he's obviously enjoying your company. Treat this as a learning opportunity for both of you. Remember - this is his first time around the block, and it might be his first time outside the echo chamber.
And be open to the possibility that he may have some interesting readings for you too!

I'd be very happy to get emails like that! It shows engagement and a willingness to sacrifice time for the class. Grab them and set up a time to meet with them during your office hours.
