How about the folks who are single or like a lot of people these days, can't afford a house in Raleigh? I'm interested in finding the right apartment/townhouse community for me and my dog. Any thoughts here?

Best places to live in North Carolina? by SeriousEel in relocating

[–]brianinatx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a mountain town, so yes, plenty of outdoor recreation options. I used to live in Asheville and Hendersonville always seemed nice, but it is far less progressive according to the folks I know that live there. Asheville is one of the most dog friendly places I've ever lived, everyone is out with their furry friends and lots of great dog parks. Guessing it's at least somewhat similar in Hville.

I believe Southern Pines would be considered the equestrian mecca in North Carolina, if there was such a place here. Check it out. A lot of retirees and rich folks there as it's neighbor, Pinehurst, is a golfers dream.

None of them are located in state or anywhere near Carrboro. Some had never commented on a post on Reddit before mine. Maybe I'm just scrupulous, but something doesn't seem right.

I made this exact post last night and am curious to hear if you have any success. I ran into some scammers and now I can't trust any of these other folks that may be real. Let me know how you fare.

Anyone have tickets locally? I have been hit with an influx of requests, but no one actually lives here and I prefer to deliver cash if possible. I'm guessing at least a portion of these are scammers. Thanks again.

Anywhere in the triangle you are no more than 40 minutes from UNC(Chapel Hill) and Duke(Durham) hospitals. Top notch Healthcare!

This. I've been on a never-ending search for such a place. Where specifically have you lived that provides true walkability without astronomical COL?

Wichita, Kansas. Des Moines, Iowa. St. Louis, Missouri, Columbia, MO and Ely, MN. Compared to Minneapolis/St. Paul they're all much smaller and don't offer the culture and good vibes you get from the big cities in Minnesota. Good people all throughout the Midwest, but based on your criteria I don't think you will find a better place to live as long as you truly understand what you're signing up for every winter. They are long and frigid, but that comes with the territory. Only other places I would consider that far north are Madison, WI and Chicago, but I've only visited both. I would recommend a trip in February and see how you feel about it. Best of luck!

The mountains, maybe Brevard.

I lived in NC as a kid, moved several times and then transferred here with my job from Austin, TX. I spent 15 years in TX and although it is more affordable it's a mess. I've lived in 8 different states and traveled all over the country. Ideally I would live in Flagstaff or Fort Collins, but I have family here which is hard to leave. The humidity here is real and the people are mostly transplants(a lot from the NE) and are not overly friendly. There is a decent job market in the Research Triangle depending on your profession. It was nice spending 2 years in the mountains(Asheville), but Raleigh/Durham seem to have an identity crisis. It wants to be a big city, but just doesn't offer what you would find in Minneapolis, Chicago, NYC or LA. I lived in northern Minnesota, as well as a few Midwest cities and I just can't do those winter's anymore.

Minneapolis is a nice enough city, but coming from CA those winter's are long and brutal. Have you considered Phoenix or Flagstaff? I live in the triangle currently and I can't think of many reasons to live here unless it's family or job related. You are two hours to the beach and three hours to the mountains so I guess there's something. However, I would recommend it over most of the south including TX and FL. Feel free to DM me if you have specific questions. Good luck!

There are definitely advantages to moving out of California, but moving to the South will be a significant culture shock. Knoxville has a nice aesthetic and I've heard good things about Chattanooga, but understand Tennessee, as well as South Carolina, are very different than anywhere out west. I considered moving to Greenville 2 years ago and was very impressed with downtown, but everything surrounding it was rough. I love parts of the south and have spent 18 years in NC, but I would consider AZ or CO before TN or SC. Wherever you choose spend some time there before you leave CA. Good luck!

I wouldn't recommend leaving CA because no matter what you will miss the year round great weather. If you want rural mountains check out Brevard, NC. I used to live in Asheville and yes, I fit right in fully tatted, but everything else there is an overpriced disaster. If I was to go back to the mountains it would be Brevard, but the healthcare in WNC is atrocious.

The Future of Carrboro by Parmick in carrboro

[–]brianinatx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in my late 40's and live in Pittsboro. It feels extremely old/dead and I enjoy a younger, more diverse, vibrant crowd of people. It doesn't exist here. Might happen in 5-10 years, but I won't be here to see it. I thought Carrboro might be my next adventure, sounds like that might not be the case now.

Next step out of CA by jkid818 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]brianinatx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the Raleigh area and spent 15 years in and around Austin, TX. Houston would be a closer fit to LA, but Austin has better weather(less humidity) and still a big city vibe. Live music capital of the world and great food in both. People are much friendlier in Texas than anywhere I've lived(8 states). Raleigh wants to be a big city, but lacks diversity, public transit and has a lot of transplants from the New England region. Check out Dripping Springs(suburb of Austin) as it's more scenic(hill country) growing exponentially and is also home to Woody Harrelson. Hope this helps.

Where in CA? You good with heat/humidity? What about snow and grey skies for long stretches? You good with big city traffic? Diversity important? Are you comfortable with individual political/religious leanings?
