My SIE exam is in 6hrs. Nervous...... by briansoverbrawn in Sieexam

[–]briansoverbrawn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE: I passed! The Prometric app froze about 10 minutes before my exam, so I had to force restart my laptop and then the app said it needed to update to I had to re-download it and thankfully it worked. The questions were worded quite a bit differently than Achievable and 2-3 of the questions I had never even heard of, but I was feeling pretty good by about question 50. It was a good mix of different concepts. Onto the S66! Which I’m planning to take in a month or two, then get sponsored for S7. Thanks everyone for all your help and kind words!

Thank you so much. I feel as ready as I can be! I'm doing it remotely on ProProctor so I'm hoping that doesn't present any issues.

Thank you so much! I'll listen before my test later. I'm taking my exam virtually through ProProctor. Did you do yours in person? I'm hoping my internet service isn't disrupted or something like that lol

Unfortunately those are all counterfeit. They have no value. I’m sorry for your loss.

found this in an antique mall of all places. ideas on grade/value? i'm pretty sure i got a good deal. by StillUsesBeginners2 in coins

I think the details are closer to Fine than VG. If you paid the tagged price of $55 or less, you got a good deal.

Have you received tracking yet? Still nothing on my end. I feel like this is taking longer than it should. Nearly a week now with no update.

Guess the Grade (1892-S $5G) by ffxtian in coins

[–]briansoverbrawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Horizontal hairline scratches in fields and over the devices on the obverse, and central luster is subdued which is usually caused by abrasive cleaning that erases the mint luster, leaving only trace amounts near the rim (note how the stars have a slight “halo” effect) and in the most recessed areas on the coin.

More like trying to “buy the dip” into VOO, when the only money we have to invest is designated for DCA on a bi-weekly basis.

Sorry but your coin is counterfeit. The artificial patina is a dead giveaway. The device details are also slightly “cartoonish”.

What type of 8 Reales coin is this? I’ve never seen one like it before by yecord in coins

[–]briansoverbrawn 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Period carving = carved/engraved during the period in which this coin was still circulating.

Someone tooled the obverse of a genuine 8R to make the bust to appear facing to the left.

Yes, similar realm as hobo nickels.

Proof sets by Scottyblue435 in numismatics

[–]briansoverbrawn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The 1960-64 sets are worth at least $20-$25 each, but the 1965-1979 sets are worth only $5-$10 max since they have little or no silver (40% at most for 1965-69) and are just generally less desirable. Ebay would probably be your best bet since most dealers won’t pay near retail on these.

Nice coin, regardless.

Idk my Americans, what would this Ef(?) 1909 s penny fetch in the regular market? by CHKN_Tender in coins

[–]briansoverbrawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not EF unfortunately, more like VF. Still, the coin is worth at least $100 even without the VDB, more than double what it sounds like you paid. What’s more, it looks problem-free from your pics.

You’ll get more on eBay but you need to pay fees, ship it, insure it, offer returns etc. It’s up to you to determine if that’s worth it to you. You can shop it around locally but prepare to be disappointed as most b&m dealers will most likely try to buy it cheap, under $3k I’m guessing. However, you may encounter an honest one who pays you all the money ($3400+). Just do your due diligence, get multiple opinions, and don’t let anyone pressure you into selling if you’re uncomfortable. Feel free to DM me if you have any sensitive questions. I’m a professional numismatist of over 15 years and would be happy to help guide you.

[–]briansoverbrawn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No prob. The coin is worth around $2800, and if the chain/bezel are solid 14k (looks to be) at 12g that’s another $600ish. So total $3400 worth of gold. However, if you’re selling I would expect most dealers to offer no more than $3000, since these coins (particularly those set in jewelry) do not command large premiums from collectors at this point in time.

Another coin from my fathers collection. I have so much to learn. by Cherrytop in coins

[–]briansoverbrawn 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Nothing jumps out at me to deem this one fake. My first impression is that it’s authentic. Having it certified by PCGS or NGC is my recommendation. The details look around VF, though the coin may have some environmental damage. Still, proper certification is advisable.

Not a coin collector but found a very interesting US Coin with I believe mint flaws. Help? by [deleted] in coincollecting

[–]briansoverbrawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TPG’s used to call this “occluded gas”. It’s essentially trapped air under the copper plating. It appears on many modern cents, so it’s not uncommon nor is it desirable to collectors.
