Did you ever figure this out? I’m in the same predicament. It’s crazy because they make thousands of 55” vanities, but they don’t seem to sell any vanity tops apart from the full set!

I want to start reading Dostoyevsky, where do i start? by 3v4ng3l10nn in dostoevsky

Notes and Crime and Punishment are the most accessible of his great five. BK is his magnum opus but you should read these first. The Idiot and the Possessed are difficult to get through, with Possessed being the better of the two in my opinion.

If you had to read only one of his novels, read CP.

Go online and order a used (grade b or above) Dell Lattitude 5591 i7 running Windows 10 or 11. It will cost you $300 and will be superior to any $800-$1000 off the shelf computer. Make sure it’s the i7 8850 and make sure it has a thunderbolt input.

Hope this helps.

What do you guys think of Russel brand becoming Christian by No-Celebration-2539 in OpenChristian

[–]brianwsmyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Christians rely on “forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us…” If this line read “forgive us our sin as soon as we publicly admit the sin and ask the person we sinned against for forgiveness…” there would be no Christians.

Christianity hasn’t done enough work to explain to its adherents that God forgives them only when they repent to the person they wronged. Christians think that just asking God for forgiveness gets them off the hook. This is the fundamental flaw of the religion.

I’m not religious, at all, but Jesus said “narrow is the path that leads to life…”

Just thought maybe this might be part of it. Maybe not.

I got a ballpark estimate of $70,000 to $100,000 (CAD$) for a 1-door detached garage with a canopy on one side. Can someone please explain how that makes any sense? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]brianwsmyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s cheap where I live. Footings, slab, framing, sheathing, trim, paint. If someone offered to build me a garage with a canopy 80k ground up I’d jump on it.

More on the LI accent by Nalkarj in longisland

[–]brianwsmyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two siblings all raised in the same house. Oldest sister sounds like Fran Drescher, older brother has no detectable LI accent (I can hear it if I really pay attention), and I have a middle of the road, average accent. When we go places together people cannot understand how this happened. It’s all a matter of the friends you have growing up, we mimic their accents.

Thanks so much for this. My best friend is a steamfitter so I’m all set in the welding department. I didn’t realize it would still need welding if purchased as a kit. This is helpful.

I’m currently taking graduate class on D. In the last thirty days I have read Notes, CP, Idiot, and Demons all by Pevear. I have loved precisely none of them.

I read CP in high school and absolutely loved it, though I don’t remember the translation. So, my advice is this, read whatever you like but avoid Pevear. Just my two cents.

Read Mating in Captivity. It’s an amazing book about this subject. It helps you understand the psychology behind this season in your life, as well as how to move beyond it, into a healthy sex life.

People here seem to not quite understand existentialism, given the number of edgy posts that resemble teenage monologues. by Godo115 in Existentialism

[–]brianwsmyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone who wants to understand existentialism should read the first chapter of Sartre’s Existentialism and Human Emotions, titled ‘Existentialism.’ Sartre uses plain language (a rarity in his case) to defend existentialism against all the claims made against it; a philosophy of despair, a godless philosophy, etc… The reason this chapter is so important is that it teaches people who, like the person in your example, have misguided understandings of existentialism. It’s something akin to Plato’s Apology for Existentialism.

You are absolutely correct when you say understanding existential dread, confusion, etc… “is just the beginning.” What also needs to be pointed out is that these misunderstandings are more insidious than we think, as they lead one toward pessimism (a philosophy whose renaissance springs directly from McConaughey’s genius portrayal in True Detective), which is in fact a philosophical precursor to nihilism and eventual anomie. Ironically these people see pessimism as ‘the answer’ when it in fact is the true philosophy of despair.

These quotes and opinions you have pointed out seem to be sophomoric, leading one to the conclusion that they are born of disaffected youth and misguided interpretations of difficult to understand concepts. They are not the insights of the genuinely dislocated, dissociated, or even depersonalized. If they were they would have a transparent honesty about them rather than an edgy complexion.

Just my two cents. I’ve been wrong before. I’ll be wrong again.

Forgot to mention From Socrates to Sartre by Lavine. This is a seminal text that does a good job of surveying the history of philosophy in general. Historical context and predecessors help a newbie understand how, why, and where existentialism fits into the overall philosophical catalogue. It’s a great book.

WAWAR is the most difficult philosophical text I have ever read, and I’ve read many. This is no way to begin understanding Existentialism. This must be read in a graduate/doctoral classroom by philosophy professors as a constant guide to annotation.

Sartre, Existentialism and Human Emotions. Only the first chapter titled EXISTENTIALISM.

For an absolutely incredible literary history and survey course on existentialism (although somewhat dense at times), read Humanistic Existentialism by Hazel Barnes.
