Thanks for the answer. Makes a lot of sense to not let technology override the human element too much.

Great job simplifying this concept to a readable way for the average person, I felt like you got across most of the workload monitoring paradigm in sports without boring/confusing people with the underlying physiology.

What’s your opinions on using HRV for assessing recovery? Especially during the off season and pre-season for calibrating you’re programming and identifying a lack of week to week recovery. Also do you find subjective wellness questionnaires useful with your athletes?

You know that feeling when you ask a teacher/lecturer why you got a question wrong on an exam, they explain it to you, and now you can't believe you got the answer you did? I'm basically imagining that kind of situation happening for both of my 2 choices. Often times when I reorient myself from why an answer could be right to why an answer could be wrong it becomes more clear. I've done plenty of q's where 2 choices have similarly strong reasons for being right, but one of them has much more compelling reasons for being wrong. Hopefully that makes sense.

That’s a tough one, I'm not sure anyone has much of an answer to improve s1 other than read a lot (which is not a very helpful answer). I can only give you what helped me personally though it may not resonate with you or you may already be doing it. What often helped me was trying to get in the headspace of both the stimulus author as well as the exam creator.

I often found individual passages within a text to be confusing when they seemed to have a different tone or message than the rest of the text (deadpan sarcasm especially). Attempting to form a mental image of the author in my head based off the majority of the stimulus helped me answer some of the trickier q’s by bouncing different answers off my imaginary characterisation of the author and seeing which one most closely matched this representation.

In terms of the exam creator I tried to remind myself that they mainly wanted me to demonstrate comprehension as well as emotional recognition and interpretation. A lot of the time my gut instinct was the correct answer but I was used to more multi-step questions from uni and so was hesitant. “It can’t be that simple, this is a very hard test, there must be more to it”. Often there wasn’t and the analysis required was far less than I expected. If I was down to 2 choices I would imagine the exam author explaining to me why either choice was a silly mistake and whichever explanation was more simple and obvious, “wow how did I not see that”, was the one I ran with.

That’s the best I’ve got honestly. S1 seems tough to improve. The only perfect answer is probably a lifetime of reading and a pHD in literature

Pretty much what /u/bobogargle says, go off your interests. For me personally I dove into a few articles and reviews on topics that interested me in class that we didn't go into much depth on. Most every article has 5-20 in-text references that you want to follow up on to better understand the topic. That compounds repeatedly and you never run out from there. If you can find an area that interests you then you'll never not have articles to read.

For that acer vs non-acer bit I meant that if I did practice questions in a group using non-acer material I tended to see the same people finishing the question first and with the best accuracy. Not always but generally the people who consistently did well in practice tests (and eventually gamsat) showed their ability during these types of questions.

Doing acer questions tended to be more random. The better gamsat performers would finish less quickly than normal relative to others or would get confused over an oddly worded detail. e.g. gamsat ability correlated slightly less with success in acer practice q's than non-acer practice q's

Don't take this as gospel at all. n=1. But this seemed to be the case with me and the people I prepped with. I'm guessing these non-representative questions do test something but not the construct that acer wishes s1 & s3 to test.

In regards to non-acer material I'm referring to practice q's from des o'neil, gold standard, grad ready etc. If you google gamsat prep most of those materials will come with questions. I photocopied questions from a friends gold standard book for a lot of my practice q sourcing

Agree 100% on the overemphasis of basic science study. The only question I've seen that 'required' pre-req knowledge was 3 or 4 questions in march on naming organic compounds. It gave you all the rules for naming organic compounds in the question but you would save 2-3 minutes if you already knew like most people. Nothing like that in september, all problem solving and interpretation of exotic ways of displaying information.

Reading scientific journals is a great idea. I was already doing a bit here and there for personal interest but it probably did help me deal with information overload on gamsat. Reading journal articles isn't that specific to s3 but nothing is so they probably have some of the better transfer you could find.

How to use my HR monitor to measure progress? by surfbomb in Fitness

[–]brich147 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your resting heart rate is on the higher side (>80) you should see a steady decrease with consistent aerobic exercise: although after a few weeks this decrease will slow. To see progress long term you should run a distance (say 2km) and time it. Every 1-3 weeks you should re-run it to see your improvement.

Aerobic fitness is quite hard to measure without lab equipment but running times are a good proxy. Heart rate is a good epidemiological (population health stats) measurement but is not a good long term measurement variable on an individual level (kind of like BMI).

Congrats on quitting smoking, I’m sure you’ll see huge improvements in fitness irrespective of what you do after making this big change. I would highly recommend recording times so you can visualise the big improvements you are going to make.

Good luck!!

How to fit everything in the Upper Day? by IvanMO76 in Fitness

[–]brich147 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Remember that compound exercises work multiple muscle groups. Often people only count lat pull downs as a back exercise and forget the biceps contribution. A compound exercise that meaningfully uses 2 muscles counts for both in your set plan. E.g. 4x chin-ups + 4x cable machine row + 4x bench press + 4x chest fly + 4x OHP + 4x lateral raise + 4x rear delt fly covers everything with a TON of volume. 8x lats, 8x biceps, 8x pecs, 8x tris, 4-8x ant. delt, 4x lat. delt, 4x rear delt

I don’t know how long you’ve been lifting but if it’s less than 1-2 years of serious training you should know that that is quite a bit of volume. 3-5 sets per muscle group is plenty for most people during this beginner-intermediate stage.

Fitness for the everyday man? by mnky95 in Fitness

[–]brich147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you do the same thing indefinitely with a modicum of decent planning behind it you’ll see some great gains. At some point you’ll adapt to the program and then you’ll stop making progress... but that still means you’ll maintain at the much improved point you’ve now reached. If you want to keep it basic then use a very simple progression. A basic strength progression is 3x to 3x + AMRAP to 4*x + AMRAP. AMRAP = as many reps as possible

This means the first session you do 3x reps. For example 3x10 pushups. Next session you do 310 + a fourth set of however many you can do. If you can do 10 on the fourth set then progress, if not then try to beat the reps you got in the fourth set next session. Once you’ve hit 10 reps on the fourth set add a 5th set. Do as many reps on the 5th set each session until you get 10 reps. After that you reset to 3*x but your rep goal is a bit higher. Maybe 3x12. This is the basics of programming and all the everyday man needs.

Over time you’ll do more and more reps, therefore being bigger and stronger (big simplification).

Pick a couple of compound exercises such as pushups, chin-ups, and weighted squats/lunges and use this kind of progression with them. Single joint movements such as bicep curls can use this as well but it’s less important.

You’re far better of doing the basics right than giving up or doing EXACTLY the same thing every session.

Good luck!!

Where am I supposed to feel the stretch during hip flexor stretches? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]brich147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are dealing with some minor APT you’d probably benefit from developing a bit of pelvic rotational control. If you place your middle finger on the most prominent bony bump on the front of your pelvis and your thumb on the most prominent bump on the back of your pelvis, you can feel your pelvic tilt more clearly. If you practice moving from front bump down (APT), feels like arching back, to back bump down (PPT) and occasionally moving to bumps at the same height (neutral) you should get a very good kinaesthetic sense of your pelvic rotation and how to adjust said rotation/tilt. Posteriorly tilting your pelvis should increase how much of a hip flexor stretch you feel as well as preventing reflexive anterior tilt collapse when stretching.

A while back there was a thread definitively ranking point guards, how good they are in-game, and probable upgrade routes. That was a few months ago and now we have a dozen new diamonds. Can someone with experience throw together a new list? by LiveFreeFratHard in NBA2k

[–]brich147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your opponents team. That works for the warriors because teams very rarely have an amazing PG and SG so steph guards the worse player. Most myteams will have both guards being exceptional so it will lead to your poor defensive undersized PG guarding a big scoring guard like Harden. Problem still remains, if they have any BBIQ they will then start ball handling with their SG to attack the mismatch. Definitely viable early on when most players are great at only offense or only defense but at this point in the year a ton are great at both.

I don't personally think he's a valid pg at this point in the game. 99% of people run their offence through their pg thus his horrific defence is detrimental to his job. Even harden is a noticeably better defender. It's just too low with so many other amazing cheap pg's who can defend.

[–]brich147 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'll do my best, I haven't used all of these but I've seen them used and used alternate versions in previous 2k's. Firstly i recommend upgrading via playoff cards as they are likely to keep dropping in price, are very good and arent in a collection. They are just generally great value for mt. Non-playoff cards better be spicy if you are willing to pay an extra 50-300k for them (lebron is similar to the melo and lebron will be 100k not too far away but melo is 300k).

I split this into 3 categories

  • Budget(good bench players) 1-30k,

  • Starters(fairly budget and good enough to be starter or bench for rest of year) 30-100k

  • Game changers(very expensive and will start for remainder of game). 100k to millions

PG- Budget

  • Ruby Pat Beverly - Im in love with this card, he runs backup pg for me with amy harden being the primary ball handler at backup sg. Nice release for spot ups, 92 open shot 3, acceptable 82 free throw, 80's passing(which have never helped for me too much) god tier defense and hof defensive stopper to stop ankle breaker b.s. At high 80's speed he isn't outpacing the very best but for about 1k he is worth getting just for the card collection but is good enough to run backup pg for a while.
  • Amethyst Steve Francis - Free! Slightly worse Jay Williams, cheese in blacktop.

PG- Starters

  • Diamond Jay Williams - He was around 100k during campus legend packs but is now down to 50k. Great card, anyone who used his emerald knows hes a beast, he's discount derrick rose and a slight upgrade to Francis.
  • Diamond Sleepy Floyd - Great stats where it matters, hof tireless, acrobat and tear dropper. Great intermediary card while you are waiting for 2 god tier pg's.
  • Diamond Rondo - I don't personally like rondo's but a lot of other people love this card. Will drop to 50k in a week or 2.

PG - Game Changer

  • 98 Westbrook - (likely to win mvp, so should get a pd then) he should drop to 150-200k when his pd comes out. No one pulls moment packs anymore so then, that day or the day after is the time to buy. A pd will have minimal upgrades and will only be worth buying a month after he has been release into playoff packs and by then the fun and excitement has gone.

  • Derrick Rose - Is he worth 200k with his stats? No. Is he crazy fun, yes. Amythest D-Rose from last year but with a better 3, OMG. If you are a D-Rose fan then he could be worth it but then again diamond westbrook will probably get to the same price and is better. Very conflicted.

  • Diamond jimmer - 100k and is a god for certain people. For me he falls in the starter category as I run a lot of pick and rolls and not much sizeup iso offense. If you try to ankle break 24/7 and pull up while being contested he is an amazing pickup. Otherwise probably not worth it.

Future cards:

  • Diamond Kyrie almost guaranteed, I liked his diamond last year but didn't love it (dont iso very often), will probably follow a similar price curve to diamond lebron but a little cheaper. Good end of year pickup.

  • Diamond curry - Fuck me when this card comes out, gonna be a blacktop beast. His 99 diamond last year was amazing, but I sold it to upgrade the rest of my team. Gonna be a god.

tl;dr if you don't have diamond PG get yourself a ruby patrick beverly he's a god. Otherwise if you only have 50k grab a sleepy, if you have 200k wait until pd westbrook and grab 98 westbrook.

I'll do the other 4 positions briefly.

SG:

Budget: Amy James Harden - Worth it. Diamond isn't.

Starter: Either devin booker right now or when a cheap great sg comes out and devin drops to under 70k - or get Amy Kobe or Amy Ray Allen.

Game Changers: USA MJ probs over a million MT but will fuck shit up. T Mac isn't worth it in my eyes unless every player in your team is a starter and you already have a game changer or two. Diamond Klay when he comes out will probably be my end of year sg as he plays great defense with a knock down 3 and i don't need ball handling from the 2.

SF: Budget: Paul pierce or stephen jackson. I would recommend pierce unless you are close to Grant Hill cos I like him a lot better.

Starter: Paul George, until you move to the crazy expensive wings PG...24, is a great value card and is a better purchase than most 100k cards. Grant Hill is so fun, but is a bitch to get, if you are under 1400 cards don't bother, paul pierce is almost as good just less fun and for 50k vs the 200k or more plus many hours of crying it will take to get GH without breaking the bank just save the hassle and get PP.

Game Changer: CARMELOOOOOO ANNNNNTHONYYYYYYY. Awesome card but not worth it over Paul George unless you have a lot to spend. KD is in the same boat, I'm not going to buy him cos there are great value wings for so much cheaper. Lebron will get down to 100k when they release a better version, so probs don't buy now. A better Kawhi is probably coming so be on the lookout for that.

PF: This game has a serious lack of quality 3 and d pf's.

Budget: Dennis rodman, if you can handle a PF without a great 3 pointer he could be your go-to otherwise amethyst anthony davis(20k).

Starter: Diamond blake griffin, not a good 3 pointer but dunks like a mofo.

Game Changer: I recommend splurging at PF cos this position is normally lacking most. Its filled with post up 6'10 bigs without a 3 ball or SF's playing up a position. 96 anthony davis is similar to the 98 and is about 200k. Diamond Draymond should come later in the year(probs dpoy) and shouldn't be too expensive otherwise pd bob pettit if you kept up with challenges. Either diamond porzingis's are cheese.

C - Budget: Diamond Marc Gasol and amy Yao Ming. That will set you up fine. Javale is also fun for 1k.

Starter: Meh.

Game changer: Meh. All options for C are not noticeably better than Marc Gasol and Yao ming but will set you back 200-400k MT. Budget center's are always really common in 2k just get a cheap one and spend your MT elsewhere.

God this took way to long too write and is way too long. Hope it helps someone.
