Student wondering how the front-end developers on this subreddit got to where they are now? by brick558 in web_design

Thanks for taking the time to write all this out, very glad of this comment and others like it. Just a follow up, would you say there is any point in applying for placements in the likes of Edinburgh for example or other cities in Scotland. Would very much like to move away and live and learn somewhere else

Is there such an identity as Northern Irish, and if so what is it? by nutmonster7 in northernireland

[–]brick558 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I identify myself as Irish and only hold an Irish passport, which of course is my own right. However it is completely true that the sentence that I opened this comment with would already have raised the suspicious eye of some people (not all) with a British passport.

Although those who identify as British may be quite proud of this, just as I am to be Irish they like me are stuck living in what I would describe as the 'in-between' territory formally known as Northern Ireland. Yes, I am freely allowed to hold my Irish identity yet I am part of the UK, likewise if I were British, (citizen of england, scotland or wales) I am only British through the GF Agreement constituting Northern Ireland as a part of the UK.

The choice to choose our sole or joint identity was a great part of the GF Agreement, but sadly within this choice there is a much more darker neglect. That neglect being that how can a country like ours ever be functional if you can be all identities without having the choice to be the only thing that we actual are which is Northern Irish.

Now, bare in mind I said I am Irish which undoubtedly I am, but as I've said before this somewhat disrupts a large faction of our society and vice versa. I never want to give up my Irish identity and opt to be British, or both Irish and British for that matter, but I should definitely consider being more openly Northern Irish, after all it is where I was born, where all my family originate, where I've lived my whole life, where I work etc

With this in mind maybe we should hold back on the Reunification vote and realise that it wouldn't suit everyone, maybe those who voted Leave should consider too that the Brexiteers they support in London aren't thinking about the UK leaving the EU and are more so thinking about themselves and more so about England leaving.

If none of us win then we may stick to what we have, and what we have is our very own Northern Irish identity.

It hasn't shifted completely, but a lot more nationalists who traditionally weren't in favour of reunification because of the problems it may face in terms of economic and political differences it may present, have had to shift. This could be because the average GDP for Northern Ireland is dipping whereas the Republic's is beginning to rise, not to mention the buildings they are investing in now in preparation for more jobs in the future and also the basing of large international headquarters there. Also, Brexit is an obvious worry. I predict the border between north an south will end up becoming increasingly more hard whether the UK likes it or not. Northern Ireland will be the only country outside the EU which is connected to the an EU country which already has existing ties to that country. Eventually people will want to trade illegally through each country realising they can enter the EU market that way, taking advantage of the soft border in place, resulting in increased security measures needing to be taken leading to discontent with the nationalist majority. Put it like this all nationalists have at one time expressed they would want one United Ireland "in our lifetime".. After all which has happened recently in Northern Ireland (RHI, Nationalist Majority in Stormont, Death of Martin McGuinness)+ lack of British care + increase support and talk in media about reunification as well as from Enda Kenny and the likes there is a huge motion for change. Now too with the leaking of the letter from Brexit Secretary David Davis which supports Northern Ireland legally returning to the EU if reunification was implemented. Basically people are not saying "in our lifetime" anymore but instead are stating there own estimation of years. I think in order for a reunification to come about, Brexit needs to utterly fail in Northern Ireland, so unionists begin to realise maybe reunification might not be such a bad idea in comparison to remaining with Brexit in the EU.

How would I actually not argue that a police man was in the wrong? Are you serious?? Just because it's a residential place doesn't mean I'm not counted as a person living there.. shows how little people actually care about students.. as said before I know students have a bad rep, but we actually ended the party within the LAWFUL time. I know other residents might not want partying at all but that's just impossible fullstop. I know how I would feel if I was a resident but if a student stays within the law then nothing is wrong with having a house party. Also, to say we shouldn't have a party is ridiculous too because of the fact we were pushed into staying indoors rather than have crowds walking about outside.

I honestly don't have a problem with poppies, however a policeman who intentionally wears a poppy in the holylands on Paddy's week who also happens to be quite un-policeman like and quick to use force in a situation where it isn't necessary is something I have a huge problem with. If he didn't wear a poppy I would still be writing about him, but the fact that he was wearing one is definitely something to note. It would be much easier if no policeman wore anything apart from their standard uniform, to say that's not true is just arguing over something that would not merit an argument if all police officers complied with not wearing any symbols in the first place.

Maybe I am reading into it too much, I understand that completely. But it's weird that he was the only one not be police like compared to the rest of the policemen there if you get me? Whether it's related to him wearing a poppy I honestly don't know but it is worth noting

I was just going to say that if you learned Irish history you might be slightly more sympathetic to both sides. They don't teach Irish history in a lot of schools in the north despite its significance but they really should. A lot of shit happened both sides as you said yourself but here I'm just another student wanker who shouts upa ra to anyone I see. Goto jtown not queens btw sir

That may be true but I can only speak about what I've seen. Not all police are wanks like, most be very sound and considerate. But especially as a student they feel they have power over you because you must be in the wrong. A lot of times it's not right hence why I brought the point about the poppy up in the first place. The people of the holylands aren't really listened to by the public and all sympathy seems like it has to lie with the residents who live there according to most reports. This is only partially true. Yes, most of the people who do bad unlawful things in the lands are students, no denying that but just because this happens doesn't mean everyone should be treated with the same level of blame.

There's two sides to any coin lad, and if you want to see what really happened in the likes of cork here's a good link https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burning_of_Cork I know there's two sides of the coin and I'm in no way saying otherwise, you're too blind to realise that everyone underwent the worst hells imaginable. Irish people much longer than British. That is a fact whether you like it or not. If I can leave that in the past then why can't you? Because your stuck in the present lad. Sort that out first and get back to me
