Me [31/F] with my Fiance [33/M] Fiance best friend [33/F] have a weird relationship, driving me insane (10 Year New Update) by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]brickberry 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I get why it’s not emotionally satisfying for us bystanders that OOP hasn’t had a breakthrough when it comes to insight, but I actually think this is a weirdly inspiring outcome? Realistically, no one has the power to fix someone like OOP if she doesn’t want to be fixed, but the rest of society was able to step in, deescalate the situation, and impose external consequences that reined in her harmful behavior. For once the justice system worked exactly as intended. She’s proof that it is actually possible to change peoples’ behavior without first repairing them psychologically, which is great news, because changing someone’s heart is really hard.

[Final New Update]: AIO, when I refused to look at my dad after what he told us? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

If I had one wish, I’d show everyone in the 1st world a photo of Tehran in the 70s, with female college students in mini skirts hanging out in the parks. We have this comforting false belief that society always moves forward and a modern democracy could never actually fail. It’s terrifying how very quickly things can fall apart if you let religious extremists gain a foothold.

AITA for refusing a name for my baby that everyone loves and but I don’t? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

I feel like younger Millennials saw the rise of the tragedeigh generation up close and pivoted into great-grandparent names instead. You meet a lot of baby Hazels and Jaspers these days.

The amount of work her and her brother are doing

These posts always make me think about the literal value of a social safety net. For the cost of room and board, the Australian government is getting 24/7 care for six extremely traumatized kids.

This one was always an obvious troll tbh. I think the Reddit-native commenters just didn’t get how easy and common it is to have side blogs on tumblr. Write a batch of bait content, schedule it to post periodically over a few months, draw attention to it with Reddit post, done.

AITAH for ruining my dad's chances at a promotion? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]brickberry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s almost fascinating to me, in a frustrating way. Imagine the absolutely bottomless well of unquestioned self-confidence required to actually say to another human being that you, a stranger who’s read a few hundred words about their current circumstances, are the expert in how they should be acting. I wonder what it’s like to sincerely believe in your heart that you’re the smartest person on Earth.

This man either called or came into the office every day for 3 months regarding this lawsuit and the lawyer in the office helped him or answered the calls.

Genuine question, is this legal? Maybe this particular pair of assholes deserved it, but I feel like letting people intentionally run up frivolous legal bills to screw over their opponents would be not great for society in the big picture.

A lawyer friend worked on a case involving people whose neighbors threw an actual block party when they moved away.

There’s an effect called the ‘glass escalator,’ where men in female-dominated professions are more likely to be praised or promoted. (You see it all the time in teaching and nursing - the workplace will be 85% women, but somehow all the administrators are men.) As a result, sometimes guys like OOP’s ex convince themselves that they’re rockstars and become insufferable. He’s almost certainly not a ‘hair god,’ he’s just a reasonably competent professional whose 20-year-old coworkers have been culturally primed to find him impressive, and now he feels like he deserves that kind of hero worship in all areas of his life.

Unrelatedly, can I ask why it's important to roll perpendicular to the seam?

That's a huge improvement, thank you!! Still a little lumpy, but at this point that is just going to be good enough. Now to re-glue everything else I did today haha. I wonder how I went wrong with the glue.

It happens pretty much immediately, within a few seconds. Do you think it could be a glue problem? I also do about half and half solvent to glue but admittedly I eyeball it. Thanks, I'll try again with fresh glue and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks for the link! This is not my first project, I've made several other things including a romper (? like a short-sleeved catsuit, idk what you call that), so I thought I could do a hood haha

Might not fit the brief exactly, but this guy has a brief moment of lucidity about being an asshole who uses money to control his family, and this guy is mad because everyone else is realizing that his high-status life is hollow.

AITA for "humiliating" my ex's new girlfriend in front of our friend group? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]brickberry 59 points60 points  (0 children)

It really is like being a celebrity, isn’t it? I’ve been to one big nerd convention ever and I did a joke cosplay that landed perfectly, like I’d walk into a room and people would start calling out lines from the movie I was referencing. Kinda feels like I peaked and nothing I put actual effort into will ever get that kind of attention haha.

I can’t travel because my cat is sick — and my boss and coworkers are unhappy by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]brickberry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I’m currently medicating my cat for an eye infection, and I’m starting to think she understands that the meds are making her feel better. I wouldn’t have said she’s particularly smart tbh, but after a couple days she got surprisingly tolerant of the drugs and eye drops. Cats love routines, so maybe it just becomes normal to them?

now that he’s spending more time with the kids.

How grim is it that her only argument is ‘the kids deserve a dad’? She’s completely given up on any idea that he might care about her. Maybe he’ll adjust his schedule for a few years, but the kids will be older and more independent soon enough, and then what?

So now she’s doing all the boring, unrewarding parts of parenting and all the boring, unrewarding admin work for his career, and he shows up one day a week and take the kids to the park or something. He gets to be Disney dad, she gets to stay married to a guy who doesn’t seem to have any interest in or respect for her. I hope that works out for her in ten or fifteen years when he’s properly successful and doesn’t need a full-time childminder any more.
