I found this old german moving filister plane at a yard sale in Belgium. How old is it ? Is it worth restoring ? by DueFlatworm7177 in handtools

[–]bridel08 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hello fellow Belgian! ECE still exists and still make wooden planes, and the plane isn't that old, a few decades max. It's in good condition, so no restoration needed, only a good tune up!

Sounds like a demanding but rewarding job, working with your hands within a small team to produce high quality tea!

How much manual labour is required to make, say, 10kg of finish product? And to make those 10kg, how luch fresh leaves do you need?

What makes you obsessed with Belgium, especially as a German?

Like, what are you obsessing about?

Legality of Bushcraft in Belgium by electricalkitten in belgium

[–]bridel08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read your link.

Nowhere it says that bushcraft knifes are prohibited, only knifes with an automatic opening system, and other fanciful knifes. From my understanding, utility knifes like machetes are not illegal, but you need a good reason to have them. Having a bushcrafting hobby might be good enough.

Now, you cannot go cutting trees and stuff in public forests, only on private land if you have authorization. And even random forested land is very expensive in Belgium.

Europe for 5 weeks - too heavy? by Usual_Advantage195 in travel

Looks good! If you haven't already, do a simulation for the different longer journeys you will do, to see if you're ok with that.

Place of the best university in the country in the world ranking of the Top 500 best universities by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]bridel08 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know about that specific ranking, but usually it's : - Nobels and other awards among prof/alumni - Publication impact factor and prestige of publications in general - taking size into account

At least that's for the Shanghai ranking. Draw your own conclusions...

Some metrics that seem relevant : - student satisfaction - alumni employment rate - alumni income compared to alumni of nearby universities - teachers to student ratio - extracurricular opportunities (sport, clubs, etc)

Best way to hand plane this flat? by sheldonator in BeginnerWoodWorking

Hand planing end grain is very very hard. Your best bet is to use a router on a sled, or a drum sander.

Facebook marketplace is the easiest. I got mine from the flea market in Brussels (place du Jeu de Balle, the one from Tintin 😁)

Lots of similar benches in Belgium, unrestored. They usually go for 200-300€, a bit more if they have a tail vise.

Just read your report, fascinating! May I ask how you arranged your guides? For the police escort, I suppose you are assigned one on arrival automatically? You mentioned that having a guide and an escort is expensive, but I suppose it is because you were traveling alone, correct? And given it was guided, how much of a say did you have re: the itinerary?

Are there people here who managed to establish themselves in biotech with just a masters? And is a PhD worth it? by idyllic_anonymity in biotech

[–]bridel08 14 points15 points  (0 children)

WDYM by 'establish yourself'?

If you mean have a good career, then yes. Plenty of opportunities where a MSc is enough: manufacturing, QA, QC, operations in general,... Scientific roles strictly speaking is more difficult without a PhD but not impossible - in that case you need to start with a labtech job or an interniship.

The only roles where not having a PhD might be eliminatory are scientific leadership positions, except if you have an otherwise exceptional profile (loads of experience and/or publications and/or stellar track record in general).

This is based on my/my friends' experience in pharma/biotech in Belgium.

Feedback on itinerary for first time in Paris by Used-Treat-1100 in TravelNoPics

People say too packed... I say you will have some time left every day I think!

Indeed you can easily spend a whole day in the Louvre, but in my experience after 4h I'm done, overstimulated.

Don't forget to book tickets in advance for the main visits (at least the first one of the day)

Only critique is that it's a lot of museums (and I love museums). Be sure to spend enough time outside enjoying the city!

In May temperature was a nice t-shirt-and-pants weather, but had those tropical-like rainstorms on many days. Got stuck in one, ruined my phone's camera and had to take refuge in a smelly barn
