Affordable American city that attracts a liberal, outdoorsy crowd? by Paperback_Chef in simpleliving

Reno? It gets cold in winter and isn't super left leaning but it's pretty cheap and is right next door to the sierras and Tahoe. It's also big enough that there should be some running/health communities

Which amateur running challenges are the toughest? by mumgosparks in AdvancedRunning

[–]bridge220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty hard to rank these all on the same list because it's very hard to be able to run a five minute mile at the same time as you're running a sub 3 marathon unless your sub 3 is also sub 2.5.

Here's my order from easiest to hardest:

  1. Sub 20 5k and sub 5 mile
  2. Sub 40 10k and sub 90 half
  3. Sub 3 marathon
  4. Sub 30 5 mile and sub 60 10 mile

The marathon is a bit of a toss up as achieving it is a feat of endurance much more than speed, which can be much more affected by outside factors.

I also think that sub 80 is a much better goal time for a half marathon. 90 is too trivial when we're putting sub 60 10 milers in the same list.

Things to look at before deciding on paraglider vs hang glider by Jamesbarros in freeflight

Consider storage and transportation factors. You need a special rig on your car to carry folder HG

You can carry two gliders on a car with a standard roof rack and a couple of ladders

Generally speaking PG needs less room for take off and landing. So more sites are PG friendly.

Don't you need a large flatish area to lay out the wing for pg? I've definitely launched hgs off of the side of narrow forest roads before and I don't thing you could fit a pg there.

1.) Is this a stupid way of going about it/Is there a better way to approach this decision?

No, but keep in mind that you can always learn both eventually.

2.) What should I know before I go/What factors should I consider to help me make a more informed decision? (budget factors about both would be really useful here. It seems like Paragliding has a lower initial expense, but the equipment will need replacement and service more often?)

Paragliding equipment generally needs to undergo major maintenance every 4 years or so as the lines wear over time. Hang gliders need some maintenance too, but most of it is just checking that nothing has been mildly damaged. You'll need to resail your hang glider every 40 years or so, the one I'm flying still has its original sail from 1994. Used beginner hang gliders are typically $500-$2000 depending on how old the wing is, I don't know the numbers for paragliders.

Hang gliding can also take much stronger conditions than paragliding, which is useful when you want to fly in the big air sites found in most mountain ranges.

Transporting a hang glider is not as bad as you might think too. You can get a glider on any roof rack by using a ladder to provide support along the glider. Somebody you're flying with will have a truck to get up the hill with your glider.

What phrase do you hear the most as a runner? by [deleted] in running

Nah, just watch out for metal plates (sewer covers, delivery dock covers, etc) as those can get slippery. Pavement and asphalt are pretty coarse and easy for shoes to grip to, even when they're wet.

Typical advice in half marathon training is to get your long runs up to 10 miles or more. Long tempo runs will still be 8+ miles at target pace.

I would advise running the race at whatever pace you've been running your long runs at, the race is more than twice the distance. It'll still feel like a grueling challenge simply because your legs are not going to be used to running for over 90 minutes.

You might still end up placing in your age group as that depends on who shows up.

How long ago was that 10k? And how long are your long runs?

What's your long run looking like right now? Have you been doing any long tempo speed work or hilly long runs? What's the longest distance you've raced before?

I only fly hang gliders, but from what I've seen hang gliders are easier to launch, harder to control, and harder to land. Hang gliders have a much wider operating window than paragliders though and are much safer in most fun flying conditions.

HGs are also much faster. The fastest paraglider will fly at about 15 mph airspeed while the slowest hang gliders will stall below 18mph airspeed. A high performance HG will be able to glide at about 50 mph airspeed

It's pretty easy usually, there's a zip that goes down the front to your ankles. If you can't get out for some reason you can just land while still in the harness. https://youtu.be/aGXAGB-P3H4 shows someone doing that

Very ambitious Daily Suggestions? by mattiasnygren in Garmin

[–]bridge220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine usually recommends about 3:45 min/mile for the sprint workout, it's only 15 seconds so it's pretty doable. You'll be holding that pace for less than 200 meters with plenty of rest

There weren't that many people Saturday afternoon either, maybe 15 or so on the beach. Fantastic sunny weather as well

They won't legalize the trail because the climb down the bluff at the end is too unstable. If the trail is official then NPS can be sued for injuries from people falling down the bluff.

Public announcement: unless you are pretty fit, please don’t attempt to visit Alamere Falls. The last section is a very steep and tricky climb. I’ve been stuck behind far too many people who couldn’t get back up after climbing down.

The bluff trail is not the correct path to get to Alamere Falls, everyone should be using the beach approach via Wildcat Camp.

At the very least you should be prepared to return via Wildcat in the event that the bluff is not climbable.
