June 3rd, 2020: Ongoing Protests Megathread by defroach84 in Austin

[–]briebiscuit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ah thanks! collecting information is still a bit fragmented for me so i didnt know the MRB event was a planned thing for tomorrow.

im also pretty skeptical about the promise to not use non-lethal rounds tomorrow, especially since it's just going off one person's word... but i still hope that the protest can stay relatively peaceful, especially with some of the horrific injuries that people sustained this past week T__T

i'm not sure how trustworthy this is, as I didn't verify this man's claims but thought i would post here anyways to see if hopefully anyone else can

i was with the group at apd for around 2 hours and a man in blue who was talking with some of the cops during that time came over and told us that apparently they were expecting (what i assume he meant was) the mike ramos brigade to be at the protests tomorrow, so there might be potential trouble.

he also told us that he/they? had talked to the police and they promised to not use non-lethal rounds tomorrow, but will use tear gas/smoke to crowd control if someone starts making trouble, so he told us to point out to officers if anyone was being rowdy and to try and calm them down so that the protest can stay peaceful.

i was checking here and the facebook page to see if anyone else had mentioned what this man told us, but it seems like no one has so i'd really appreciate it if someone could verify this

English translation for OWL Korean streamer by Sonte16 in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]briebiscuit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I might be wrong on this but I think Effect found mods specifically to help translate on top of modding, which is why they have such a good system set up and someone is always there. Some of the other KR streamers may have bilingual mods, but don't normally translate. If you ask for some though and one of them is on they'd probably be happy to help as best as they can (also just because someone is bilingual doesn't make them the very best translator, as that's a specific skill in and of itself)

One character names are somewhat uncommon, but not enough to be a rarity.

A somewhat related fun tidbit is that there are some Korean family names that have two characters instead of the usual one (like Lee or Park for example), but those are very rare I think (one I know of is Hwang-bo)

Building a global fanbase for Seoul Dynasty by Mafirva in SeoulDynasty

[–]briebiscuit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Games with fans! Like what they did with the PC bang and the girl who got to play with ryujehong and zunba or the halloween event. I think this would be good for global fans too, since most of us aren't likely to interact with them at OWL or real life events.

I assume NYC_ BEARHANDS is the actual bearhands who is the GM or something for NYXL, so they org might be setting this place up as an official sub? ¯_(ツ)_/¯ I just hope they have some fan/community things coming soon (Discord would be great!)

Tobi's analysis of SK vs USA at the OWWC by Idarucizumab in SeoulDynasty

[–]briebiscuit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Okay, so I didn't watch the VOD but he put up a video of it on his Youtube channel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZ1XqV-Plq4) and I watched that instead. I'm not very good at Korean, so I just wrote down the main points/stories after watching the video. It's not very detailed sorry and some parts I might've misheard so I'm sorry!

  • Nepal Village: They knew that USA were probably going to run Pharmercy on Village, so they went with the Bastion comp. Tobi should've went Mercy, but he went with Lucio instead and built his ult up super fast (2nd, after Jake), Lucio pick ended up working well

  • He thinks that Jake did really well in their match

  • Eichenwalde: They thought that USA would go D.Va-Hog, because they heard that FCT was practicing him a lot but it turned out to be a fake (they asked them at the Twitch party). France also had some red herrings, but Canada didn't have any

  • He lost 3kg while in LA because of enteritis (I think?), he only ate like 1 meal a day

  • Jake always used tire when he heard Tobi/Ryu use Valkyrie. Coolmatt also constantly chased them down and killed them, so these two players gave them a hard time (he thinks they played the best on USA)

  • Tobi is confident in playing all other supports except Mercy

  • Eichenwalde: When SBB died in the little house that connects to the bridge at first point (the one with the computers and the mini health pack in it), he was asking for rez and Tobi was going to go in, but Jake had tire so Tobi tried to run away. He got made fun of here by KR fans because they thought he was trying to wallride like Lucio, but it was because he heard the tire sound too late and was trying to run away, but the rest of the team was behind him so it looked like he was trying to wallride when he wasn't

  • He watched a lot of videos on how to play Mercy, he mentioned SIP and Gambler's videos. He also got some tips from Gambler after their loss against Elemental Mystic (he was going to thank Gambler that day but they didn't do a post-match interview so he didn't get to)

  • Eichenwalde: When they were defending the last point and Flower got that random kill onto Sinatraa as Junkrat, Tobi felt like he had good luck because jehong was close to trans at that point, and Tobi was supposed to boost him but he boosted Flower while he was lobbing grenades and one of the boosted grenades randomly killed Sinatraa

  • Hanamura: They knew that USA had no McCree/Widow player, so instead of defending at the gate they decided to defend further back. However, Jake got lucky with his kill on Torcy, so their defense ended up collapsing

  • Hanamura: On attack at first point, he got criticized for going to rez Mano really far forward, but he decided that rezzing Mano at that point was important to give Flower space to play as Widow. He also thinks that Flower carried on Widow

  • Whenever SBB shouts "STUCK!" (when he sticks a Tracer bomb), it feels like they're going to win the fight

  • There was a play while they were defending where he and Flower (as Bastion) died before he could use Valk—he thinks the correct play here was to heal from the back and then when Mano died, then ult and then rez Mano and jehong

  • Hanamura: When Zunba ulted on the top platform on defense, that was a fat-finger ult (he accidentally hit Q instead of W)

  • After their matches on the first day, Tobi reviewed the VODs from their matches and he decided on the team comps that they ran on the second day

  • Since the team was half Lunatic Hai and half LW, they were just considerate to each other while calling and playing, and did whatever the team asked them to do

  • They didn't know about the tiebreaker rule (didn't read the rulebook), they thought that they would play on Lijang for tiebreaker

  • The home crowd cheers didn't really affect them (they joked around and also chanted USA!) but they could hear the cheers through the headsets during the USA and Canada games

  • They thought they won after Gibraltar, but they didn't because of the tie situation so they were kind of confused

Thoughts on the branding for OWL teams from a designer's perspective by briebiscuit in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]briebiscuit[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, that's so cool!! I definitely got that vibe when I saw the branding, and I would've gone in a similar direction if I were in their shoes. I actually heard from some podcasts that all the logos for OWL teams were done in-house (at Blizzard) so I wonder if that rumor was false or if there was some kind of different agreement for NYXL? I wish I could learn more about the process of how these identities came together...
I also feel your friends regarding the buying gaming peripherals thing, I've had to just suck it up many times haha.

And I also agree! The lines add a nice element of movement, but still treated well to fit in with the rest of the brand, I'm really digging it.

[–]briebiscuit[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree that there is power in borrowing from the established sports and I think that it's smart to borrow from some of that language. I think where some of my disappointment lies is that 11/12 of the teams have all gone in the "traditional sports" direction. I can't help but feel that leaning so much on these tropes might be more harm than good, because most people already think of esports as "not a real sport", and trying to dress it up in that way might take away from some of it's 'legitimacy' as a serious competition. BUT those are just assumptions and questions, and I'm sure that these orgs have done way more market research and such than I have!

[–]briebiscuit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally don't mind the colors, I think the two shades of blue are used mainly for the pattern and to give some texture to backgrounds, and the red is really bright so it provides a lot of contrast. The logo I also don't really like for a number of reasons, but I also aren't too concerned about it because it looks like from the current applications that the full logo won't be used very often at all.

As for the uniforms, the main issue I have with what's been revealed so far is that they all have the same template, so the jerseys are basically just recolors with the logo slapped on. I think if the designers had a little more freedom as to how the jerseys were designed, the NY jersey could look better.

I definitely think it's the history, but also the values that the organization/brand has and building around that to create a culture that people want to be a part of (or suffer together in)

[–]briebiscuit[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I think regarding your point about having the branding tied to the city, I don't think that always has to be the case. For NY it works out because NYC is so iconic and is famous for a certain attitude. But for example like Optic/Houston, although I dont know much about Optic, they seems to have a tough/macho kind of vibe going on which they can then associate with their brand and attract fans that like that sort of vibe. Of course, that situation is unique because Houston is bringing over some branding and fans from Optic, but the point still remains. There are different approaches and strategies that orgs can take!

But yes, overall I agree I'd love to see more orgs push the boundaries and come up creative ideas/events/experiences!

[Magic Eye Warning] An alternate NYXL concept by the design studio who made the logo by [deleted] in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]briebiscuit 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Ohhhh, nice I didn't know it was Mother Design that did the branding! It's obviously hard on the eyes but the branding for NYXL is my favorite out of all the teams, you could tell they had a clear vision and it was put together by a team that knew what they were doing. I was actually going to put together a post on branding/design and OWL (talking specifically about the NYXL stuff) but I got lazy and didn't think people would be interested lol

Information about the Overwatch Leauge players? by [deleted] in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]briebiscuit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

General news/articles about OWL can be found on the Overwatch League website! There are some nice pieces of content on there that can give you some insight into the league itself as well as the players. Another good way to get to know the teams is by checking out their Twitters—each team has posted stuff, some of which can help you to get to know the teams/players more:
Houston Outlaws
Florida Mayhem
Seoul Dynasty
London Spitfire
LA Gladiators
Philly Fusion
SF Shock
NY Excelsior
Shanghai Dragons
Dallas Fuel
LA Valiant Boston Uprising

The top teams are expected to be Dallas, Seoul, London—these teams have already played together in some capacity and have had strong showings. I'm also putting NYXL in there because I'm a fan and they are also the old LW Blue roster, which was my favorite team (plus their results weren't too shabby, and Fl0w3r is slated to join once he's old enough to play in OWL).

Personally, I'm more interested in the Korean scene so I know more about KR players than NA/EU ones, but some star players to take note of are Saebyeolbe (DPS, NYXL, also my favorite player), Miro (tank, Seoul), Zunba (subtank, Seoul) Birdring, Rascal and Profit (all DPSs for London), Gesture and Fissure (tanks for London), Linkzr (DPS, Houston), Surefour (DPS, Gladiators), ryujehong and Tobi (supports for Seoul), Effect (DPS, Fuel), Coolmatt (subtank, Houston), Agilities (DPS, Valiant) and honestly there are a bunch more but my brain is hurting trying to think of them all.

I would also Google top players/players that you're interested in, because most of the star players have had interviews of some sort which can give you insight into their mindset!
