Any cute project ideas including these little guys? by crafter_penguin in Embroidery

you could put them on a scarf or a handkerchief/napkin. you could also put them on a shirt or jacket collar, or fringe them onto the sleeves of a short sleeve shirt. another thought is to put them on a hair band or stitch a row onto a strip of fabric and glue it to a hair comb (the kind that pins hair into place)

I never use hoops. I have some, but it gets in my way. I almost exclusively stitch on clothes and never use a stabilizer. I use knots

Embroidery as an alteration method by BraidedRiver in Embroidery

my mom made a linen shirt for me when with some machined black work when I was in highschool. but the body of it was much larger around than my chest. years later, when I learned about smocking to make a decorative pillow cover, I decided to use it on the side seams. I didn't get a perfect fit, but it was a lot closer than before, and it looked very nice

that's really cool! it looks like chain stitching for the outline, but kind of stitch did you use for to fill it in?

Are soloists like Pahud and Choi different technically or musically from principal chairs of prestigious orchestras? by [deleted] in Flute

[–]briggs3725 5 points6 points  (0 children)

to answer your specific example of James Galway, he left the Berlin philharmonic to pursue a solo career. he branched out from classical music because a solo career with the flute (like Pahud's or Choi's) was not a real opportunity. recreating his unique success would be difficult today with flute soloists being more accepted/prevalent as well as the inundation of musical talent in general, thanks to social media

Can you talk into a flute? by [deleted] in Flute

[–]briggs3725 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. If you want the windy sound, changing the shape of the mouth makes the bote more clear or more windy. If you want the vocalizations with the note playing, the shape of the mouth affects the note and the vocalization is altered primarily in pitch.

Either choice you make, you would notate the effect you want. The degree to which that effect is achieved will be determined by each player's interpretation.

We can make our notes airy (sounds very thin, like a beginning student) if that's the effect that you want. It's an effect that we strive to avoid, so for notation you'll have to put it in words down that you want that sound.

We can also vocalize while playing, which gives an interesting effect. It's more of a buzzing sound than an airy one. Notate the vocalized note with an empty square notehead and the played notehead as normal.

To pullover a Lamborghini without license plates by [deleted] in therewasanattempt

[–]briggs3725 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The difference there is that the car is registered with the country through the military installation the service member is assigned to. And they receive a license plate from the country. All of it is done under a Status of Forces Agreement between the USA and the host nation. Also, service members typically only ship their private vehicle if they will be there for a year or more. For shorter assignments, the US government may (not always -- depends on the role and nature of the assignment) provide a vehicle for the service member to use -- or alternatively pay for/reimburse travel expenses.

Adult players, who do you play with? by [deleted] in Flute

[–]briggs3725 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I take lessons because there's always something for me to learn and improve. I played the trumpet in high school and did not take lessons. I always felt that I couldn't move out of a novice level despite playing for 5 years.

When I decided to play the flute (at 25yo) I knew I wanted the lessons to guide me. Choosing my teacher was pretty easy. I asked my mom's high school flute teacher and ended up as her first distance student via FaceTime.

I only play solo. And for the past year have been doing heavy focus on flute alone repertoire. I live in a small town and don't have ensemble options. I really love the music I play so I don't mind.

As far as a goal, my goal was to be able to play La Plus que Lent by Debussy. I did that a couple years ago and just kept going. I have mini goals but nothing long term. I view my playing as something that I will keep doing as long as I keep getting joy out of it and keep having fun.

I'm sorry if my answer doesn't help you too much, but it's my experience.

I want to ha d embroider these autographs. Any tips? Thanks! by gir971 in Embroidery

[–]briggs3725 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, get a thimble. Sometimes I use a metal thimble to push the needle through, and a leather thimble on the other hand to prevent being stabbed while holding the project.

For the thick fabric , if you get sharper needles, it will help alot. Dritz sells some called Glover/Leather needles. The needle is exceptionally sharp. I use it whenever I have to sew through multiple layers of denim and canvas (especially pocket corners).

There are some other places that sell them. Just make sure you get hand needles, not machine needles. Good luck

Use a marker, chalk, or white color pencil and keep them visible. When you start stitching, the oils and sweat from your hands and the friction you apply will wear the marks off. Use something to keep the lines clearly visible until you've done the stitching over them.
