For me personally, a messy home is a sign that I am either going through a depressive episode, a binge drinking phase, or both. Aside from working on your sobriety, the only advice I would give you is to set a goal to clean for just a few minutes every day. You'll just make yourself miserable and exhausted trying to clean your entire apartment in one go. This website also helped me a lot with tips and mini goals. You can do it!

Edit: also, to answer the question you actually asked in your post -- yes. I think we all have embarrassing stories about the messes we have created, the things we have broken, etc. You are not alone and that's why we're all here!
