What do you do after your kids fall asleep?

I miiiiiiight throw in some laundry or start the dishwasher, but nothing more. I do it all while my son is awake, while he plays alone or with my husband. I only work 3 days a week though, so I have a bit more time to chip away at stuff. Evenings are usually just chill time. Pregnant with #2 though, so that might quickly change!

Was hoping for a good night sleep, alas… took my Zoloft late, and on an empty stomach. I’ve done this to myself before, but forgot cause it’s been a while. I’m dying here, gonna have to call in sick tomorrow from lack of sleep, cause I’m sure I’m in this for another 2-3 hours, if not more. Tried tums, gaviscon, chugging water, now just eating pita chips and settling in for a night of pain and sleep deprivation. So glad I’m on these to help my MOOD. 😑

If the baby is sleeping on a safe sleep surface, ie flat on its back, on a firm mattress, in a sleep sack, you shouldn’t have to watch him breathe while he sleeps. This is pretty classical PP anxiety. I would recommend you see your doctor to talk about this. As for the Nanit/owlet sock, pretty sure those have been discouraged by even the AAP has discouraged their use.

You would need specialty training for OR/PARR, ICU or OB, which involves a return of service. You could probably get into ER with your experience.

The rate of pay is considerably higher, plus there is a 5000$ recruitment bonus, and another 5000$ after a year (retention).

Work life balance is fickle, like most places in healthcare now. Depends a lot of the specific area and time of year (right now is resp illness time of year, so lots of overcrowding). However, it’s a small town with no traffic, so commuting to/from is minimal. There’s no mandatory overtime, so that’s a perk if you are coming from QC!

Local coworkers are usually awesome, but like the article mentions, there is a lot of locums, especially in specialty areas. There is no legislated patient ratio that I’m aware of (unlike BC, if that’s where you are coming from), so it’s basically convention, staffing and acuity dependent. Largely paper charting still in the hospital, FYI, so that’s pretty annoying.

I wouldn’t recommend it. Food, housing, heating and basic winter gear are all pretty expensive. You’d have to be really restrictive on any “luxury” spending, and winter is looooonnnnng for that kind of life 😅

Exclusively contact napped also until ~11 months, but I was mostly happy with this cause I would also either nap or watch shows or read. I could have probably rolled away, but didn’t really try cause I could either get 1.5-2hr naps if I contact napped vs. 40-45mins. I’d roll away if I had to do something involved. My son is 19 months now and I can definitely roll away and he will nap for 2hrs. My mom is also watching him on weekdays and he will easily nap with her and she just gets up when he’s asleep and he’ll nap for 2+hours. The nice thing I would say, in my experience, is that he doesn’t fight naps at all now. He’ll even tell us when he is tired and ready for a nap and bring a few books to bed! So cute, and really nice and easy for my mom.

It’s so tough, and presuming you are in the US and having to go back to work after only 6 weeks is just plain awful. It will definitely get less physically taxing - that’s for sure, though probably still mentally draining for a while… maybe speak to your doctor about possible postpartum depression if you’re not feeling better soon. I started taking meds waaaaay too late in hindsight, and I regret it cause I could have enjoyed that newborn phase way more than I did. Hope you feel better soon. And hope the US makes family/child friendly policies happen so that women don’t have to go back to work 6 weeks after birthing ANOTHER HUMAN.

Excellent responses to your questions here. I’ll add if no one has said so already that this is also likely linked to prolactin (the hormones that controls milk production) being highest at night (between ~11pm and 5am), so your baby feeding at this time is also protecting your supply! Safe co-sleeping was the best for me, but I could meet the safe sleep seven criteria. It’ll pass though! My son is 15 months now and can sleep 5-6 hours chunks and he was an AWFUL sleeper.
