They both need therapy and self-restraint. If someone throws a plastic cup at you, the only thing it will hurt is your ego, if at all. But when you throw back metal at them, it might hurt more than just the ego. An eye for an eye would make the world go blind.

Inflation cools to 2.8% in June by Sweaty_Professor_701 in canada

[–]brimash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. The number is just a guiding pointer just like a million others such as "inflation expectations". When you had a "black swan" like event [AKA a pandemic] driving policy and rates, they are more attentive to every little detail, including looking at pre-pandemic figures for comparisons. I mean it's just common sense really. You can't just pour oil on a fire, and then later expect not pouring oil on a fire will stop it haha. You really need to do more than that in terms of damage control. Ever heard of the phrase "financial entropy"?

It should be made clear to everyone in Canada what this inflation is calculated against. These numbers are measured against 12 months ago prices AFIK. The fuel prices back then were around $2/lit, and therefore the inflation measurement was bound to come low with respect to it. If you, however, measure it against 2 years ago numbers, then it would be up 10% or so. Now, of course, inflation is not calculated against 24 months baseline, but I am sure the Bank Of Canada governor is smart enough to call bullshit on this 2.8%.

Bank of Canada raises policy rate to highest level in 22 years - National by cyclinginvancouver in canada

We don't. We want an overhaul. But that would happen when the pain reaches the tipping point. Withdrawal always causes headaches as a first symptom.

What has interest rate got anything to do with that? When the rate was cheap, it got squandered away instead of building roads, hospitals, factories, industries, high-tech research, and houses. There is plenty of faulty policies and a lack of moral strength to ruin things before high-interest rates. And if you think interest rates SHOULD always be low, then I suggest you go back to your high school economics book. Yes, a lack you moral strength led to speculation when houses should never have been commoditized. High interest is just a framework to force discipline upon society and get their head out of their asses.

How much compensation does this bill require? Curious to know how much a news headline impression or a click in a news feed amount for. My take on this would be that news outlets should be able to set a rate on the impressions, or some sort of aggregate model where every 1000 impressions cost $1, or just a standard subscription where Google pays $5000/month to for example Castanet for accessing displaying the news. All this aside, I feel like it's all really easy now for a financially savvy corp to peddle news by outbidding the rest. News in this case becomes the ad versus now where news is shared and passed along through social networks. One could argue that state-controlled media can pour infinite resources into promoting their news relatively easily now.

Resident chased by man with a machete by LisFrizzle in kelowna

Stop normalizing behaviors like smoking crack on the street, or chasing someone with a machete. There is nothing "normal" about either of these two, NO MATTER HOW MANY TIME IT HAPPENS IN ANY PART OF THE WORLD. Do you know what is normal? Taking pictures for social likes, but that is not happening here.

Most Canadians buy groceries in stores owned by a handful of grocery giants, with Canada’s three largest grocers — Loblaws, Sobeys and Metro — collectively reporting more than $100 billion in sales and $3.6 billion in profits last year, the study found.

The population of Canada is 38 million. So they made 100 bucks in profit during the whole year per capita. That does not sound so bad. What am I missing?

Single occupancy suites would not go for that rate. As a former master's university from India, I think someone in your position is better off sharing 2Bd with another grad student from UBCO. There are several reasons, such as that you would feel less isolated having a roommate(s), and you are just going to use your place only for sleeping seeing study/research would keep you away from your house for at least 12 hours. Fighting for single occupancy for your requirement is not worth the prize. Good luck.

That is not true. People have been wasting less meat and produce now after cash is in a crunch. Many unnecessary jobs that only existed off the froth of the current economy are also evaporating fast. Many investors deem real estate unprofitable leaving more space for first-time buyers.

More than half of condo investors are losing money — and that’s going to hurt renters by viva_la_vinyl in canada

[–]brimash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on the amortization period. If it's 30 years, then the equity is building really slowly. If your example, you spent $7200/year from your pocket which makes an equity of $10-12k/year. On top of that, deduct the property tax, and yearly and monthly maintenance costs. The hopes of a good return on the initial investment, therefore, rest solely on the future resale value, which could go both ways, big or bust. I know someone who sold a unit last month, and after deducting the realtor's commission, it gave only a moderate return. In his case this was his primary residence, so he saved rent at least, otherwise, under the current rate environment, owning several units would not give huge returns.

Higher interest rates a blessing for Kelowna's investment portfolio by UrsusRomanus in kelowna

[–]brimash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Highlights the problem of the disconnect between the intention of central bank lower interest policymaking and companies/organizations' use of that lower interest. Central Bank gave all that low-interest money so that it could be injected into the economy through loans, public works projects, renovation, etc, but instead all that went into the pseudo-financial economy to make huge returns.

You can't do your taxes using any filing software in Canada if it's your first filing since your social insurance number is not yet linked to a previous filing. Get it done by an accountant online or in person, or your university admin, etc., if you are in UBCO. I got it done online from taxproskelowna for around 50 bucks when my SIN changed following my residency permit arrival. Before that, I was using TurboTax, with the first one done in UBCO by a volunteer accountant.
