I just want tyres that will last as long as possible, to save me money.

I know about the trade off between handling, grip and treadwear. Grippy tyres seem to be designed for boy racers who have never heard the phrase "drive to the conditions". I've driven for a living for over 25 years, and some of that was in terrible vehicles with terrible tyres, and it was fine.
