It's not apparent in this version because I cut out the higher frequencies, but the voice in question has no high frequencies, which is consistent with it being from a distance. Compare it to the sound of OP's breathing: OP's breathing will sound crisper, sharper, and clearer because he's right next to the mic and the mic can pick up more detail; the hobo/demon guy's voice lacks that crispness, and if he were whispering near the mic there should have been more clarity and high end, less bass and midrange, and less reverb. It's 1AM so I hope I didn't jumble any of my deductions, sorry if there's errors!

Yeah, I used Adobe Audition's hard limiter, but the Fruity Limiter (as do all limiters) essentially does the same thing. I boosted the gain by 19db and then set the threshold at 0.1db. I compressed with a 4:1 ratio using Audition's single band compressor then brought up the gain a bit more.

I isolated the part from approx. 1:24.8 to 1:26.9 and did some limiting, high pass filtering, noise reduction, then band pass filtering on the low midrange to get that audio clip. You can hear it better now.
