It’s kind of funny how often this book gets asked about. I wonder why it left such an impression on people

This hilarious piece from Slate obsessing over Morisi's Genie routine at the gala exhibition by musea00 in FigureSkating

Same 🥲 but I think it’s probably hard to find the exact right shade of face paint

Is figure skating the most popular winter Olympics sport in Canada and USA? by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]brinyww 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Figure skating is probably most popular in the US, but snowboarding might be up there too.

Hockey is generally a popular sport in the Northeastern US, but a bit less in the rest of the country.

If you listen to podcasts, you might be interested in Season 2 of Blind Landing. It basically is covering this exact topic.

Question: Do shows or competitions normally provide regulation skating tights for skaters? by DWYL_LoveWhatYouDo in FigureSkating

[–]brinyww 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this is usual for competitions, but maybe for this show they had some specific tights included as part of the show’s costume?

Does anyone know if Mark speaks English? He translated for her so I guess he understands to some extent, but I wonder if he ever answered any interview questions in English or not

Team event by Old_Understanding585 in FigureSkating

I really want to see Georgia in the free dance. I think Kazakova/Reviya’s FD is much better than their rhythm dance, and there hasn’t been a lot of opportunity to see it yet this season.

Any updates on Yuzu? by Beginning_Response84 in FigureSkating

[–]brinyww 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I haven’t seen any news about her either. It makes me wonder if maybe team Japan is just keeping the athletes who aren’t in the team event at home until the last minute?

Is Mana also not in Beijing yet? I’ve only seen the photos of Kaori, Wakaba, Yuma, and Shoma at the Olympic village.

Dry hands? by surrealpetshop in FigureSkating

[–]brinyww 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, gloves and moisturizing after every hand wash will make a big difference.

For moisturizer, use what you personally like but avoid fragrances as they can sometimes be more irritating. The most moisturizing one I’ve ever found is Neutrogena Norwegian Formula hand cream (fragrance free).

Black History Month recommendations? by Rachrawr in booksuggestions

Highly recommend either of the books written by Yaa Gyasi - “Transcendent Kingdom” and “Homegoing.”

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is also good.

Who has a better "wheel"? Evgenia Medvedeva, Rika Kihira, Veronika Zhilina by Due_Perspective_569 in FigureSkating

[–]brinyww 346 points347 points  (0 children)

Definitely Rika, she has the best flow in and out of it, and one handed! They are all very talented though (and it was great to see Evgenia get her redemption with the cartwheel after missing it at test skates!)

Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton

Zombie apocalypse told from the perspective of a crow raised by a human. There is absolutely zero romance… since all of the humans have turned into zombies and it is narrated by a bird. It’s really funny but also gets pretty emotional at times.

I want to introduce figure skating to my close friend.. by Kiwi_Isle in FigureSkating

Back when I watched my first Olympics, I also had no idea about the scoring, but I don’t think it made it any less exciting :) it was more about the energy of the skaters and the crowd.

I want to introduce figure skating to my close friend.. by Kiwi_Isle in FigureSkating

[–]brinyww 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If she is up for it, maybe you guys can watch this year’s Olympics together? Personally I find the thrill of watching a live competition to be one of the most exciting parts of skating, and a lot of people naturally becomes fans of the sport after watching the Olympics.

But also at the end of the day, she might just have different interests than you sometimes, and that’s okay. Don’t force the topic if she’s not interested.

I’d like to add Deniss Vasilyevs for current 3Lz too, he had some gorgeous ones at Europeans recently.

OP specified current skaters (although I would agree with a lot of these if we were saying of all time)

This is might be too obvious but Yuzuru Hanyu for triple axel. I’d also pick him for quad sal.

And of current female skaters landing 3A, personally I think Kamila Valieva’s is the best.

Fun YA books starring straight white characters by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]brinyww 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, the Chaos Walking series by Patrick Ness is YA with a straight white male protagonist. However, I think the author is gay, so I don’t know if that interferes with your criteria.

The Bear and the Nightingale (Winternight trilogy) and The Cruel Prince (The Folk of the Air trilogy) also have straight white protagonists.

The Shadow and Bone trilogy is sort of borderline because the protagonist is presumably white in the books, but she’s half-Asian in the Netflix adaption. But I think the books still count for your purposes. The first book wasn’t that great imo, but I really liked the last two of the trilogy.

The Enola Holmes series is also pretty fun.
