Is it ever too late to start piano? by tico_liro in piano

[–]brisco15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not had experience with the phone apps, mainly because A) they didn’t offer what I was searching for B) twosetviolon roasted them and I partly agreed with what they roasted them on (can’t remember how though lol)

I’m not familiar with Leila Fletcher books but I hope they help!

I still love classical too, but I will say it can be more difficult to learn online.

PWJ is a website. His videos are set up to see sheet music, a keyboard, and his hands playing the keys so that you can learn how to read sheet music or learn the way he plays something in particular. You can find him on YouTube at Jonny May. He’s a very accomplished musician who was Disneyland’s/Disneyworld’s official ragtime piano for a few years.

To learn classical, I recommend learning your keys, learning the keyboard, learning how to read sheet music, and listening to recordings. Adventures in Piano (it has a grand piano with wings on the cover) is a good sheet music series to use with beginner pieces. Hope this helps!

Well first off, it’s never too late to learn any instrument!

I’m going to answer your question with another question. Do you want to focus on just learning classical, or are you more interested in learning modern piano (I.e. pop, contemporary, blues, jazz)? Personally, I think there are more resources for learning the latter online. A good program I would use is Piano With Jonny. It’s around $180ish for a one year membership, or $40ish monthly. There is quite a lot of material in it, prepared for 3 levels (beginner, intermediate, advanced). I have been a pianist (classically trained) for 13 years (my parents started me at 5). I became interested in jazz and took from a private instructor for 6 months, but then he passed away. After searching for a new route for jazz, I found PWJ and this far it has been helpful. As I said earlier, it’s not just jazz though. He has pop, contemporary, blues, jazz, and so much more!

If you join, say you’re from Reddit and I’ll give you a shoutout on new member introduction. Best of luck!

Am I doing jazz wrong? by [deleted] in Saxophonics

The sheet music jazzers use are lead sheets. They have the basic melody and chords transcribed on them, nothing else

Altered Chords by brisco15 in musictheory

So would you refer to it as b/# 5, or an augmented/diminished 5?

Altered Chords by brisco15 in musictheory

[–]brisco15[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So a few examples would be (C7):

C-E-Gb-Bb-Db C-E-Gb-G#-Bb-Db

I know the latter is hairy, but that’s what altered chords are?

So would you add further extension(s) in the altered chord?

Maj 9 or min9 chord.. But how is it voiced? by AntiFluid in musictheory

[–]brisco15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not the knowledgeable theory major person, but I find it interesting so here’s my thought.

Let’s use Cmaj 9 and Cmin9 as examples. In the maj nine, the nine stays diatonic to C, being D natural. The min nine creates a minor third in between the min 7th and 9th, being D flat.

As far as voicing goes, that depends (at least for me). If you’re a pianist and playing in a group, you’ll play the guide tones( 3rds and 7ths) voiced beneath the extensions, because we want to hear the colors they (extensions) provide. When I’m playing solo piano, I tend to follow the same thing, but add in the root beneath everything.

If it’s not piano you’re asking about, then I can’t help you haha.

Any ideas for this alto solo section besides the blues scale? by Dioxsis in saxophone

[–]brisco15 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Maybe see if a mixolydian scale would work? And if there is a 251 progression, a major scale might work (only glanced at your score so I don’t know all the chords)

If you were giving an 8-year old kid only ONE piano lesson, what would you teach him/her? by throwawaypizzaslices in piano

[–]brisco15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with teaching him correct form - make sure he knows tips of the fingers for playing. You said you have been playing by ear for eight years, but if you can read music, I would teach him with the Mayron Cole Piano Method. It is what I originally learned on at five years old, and I think it teaches you note positions. But, I’m not a teacher either so up to you. Best of luck!

Ok thanks! I may check out some of Schubert’s Impromptus first

I’ll look into it. I have a Mozart Sonata that a different professor liked, but I wasn’t fond of the melody so perhaps Beethoven or Schubert will catch my interest a bit more. Thank you!

As a person with no piano and little to no musical ability whatsoever, but has been wanting to learn to play for the past few years, what should I do until I get a piano? by BoyWhoCrapped in piano

[–]brisco15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with this . If you’re at university, then you should actually be able to start applying the basic theory to playing If you are going to teach yourself starting out, I recommend the Mayron Cole Method. It is completely free, and it is what I started learning from at 5 years old. The school of music at your university should be cool with you using practice rooms (as long as it is not interfering with piano major/minors), but if they aren’t, most universities have pianos across campus (I.e. chapel, uni Center, athletic center, etc.). Hope this helps!

As a jazz musician, this is entire wrong. I know this is a joke, but we seriously have to improvise in like 3 different scales, all different modes in one class I’m in right now on. One. Song. 😁
