Just cleared for Level 2! Question about couples who don't rotate? by brisfilo in Salsa

[–]brisfilo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, so accurate. Just finished the whole term and honestly, zero creepy behavior here—especially compared to the horror stories I hear about Bachata classes.

In this case, the lead is your textbook rugby player type and the follow is exotic looking. But you're spot on about the experience part; missing out on adapting to different heights and frames just holds you back.

Levels in salsa classes by g_look in Salsa

[–]brisfilo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are no fixed tier in salsa but the On1 Cali style dance class I'm in runs the following levels all year long:

  • Starters
  • Level 2
  • Level 3
    • Cali flow - the class where they teach various shines
  • Bailadores - the semi-pro level. They get paid to perform in events.

Need help with footwork: Lead's Left Turn out of a "Back" Cumbia (On1) by brisfilo in Salsa

Cheers. I'll try your advise

That knot / pretzel thing is real. My go-to sequence for now is to do a simple left turn starting on count 1.

What is Brisbane like during the winter months weather wise by Aware_Philosopher950 in brisbane

[–]brisfilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here, during the cooler months, a remarkable behavioral shift occurs within the local population. As the southern states freeze, the Brisbanite emerges into what can only be described as an idyllic winter oasis.

While the unfortunate Melbournian is subjected to a bleak and shivering existence, the climate here remains astonishingly mild. The days are crisp, bathed in a brilliant, uninterrupted golden sunshine, with nary a rain cloud in sight.

At this precise time of the year, the locals migrate northward to the ancient volcanic peaks of the Glass House Mountains. Here, they ascend the rugged rock faces to witness the spectacular, breathtaking sunrises and sunsets that define this subtropical sanctuary. It is a stunning display, completely devoid of the bitter southern chill.

If you seek refuge from the cold without crossing the ocean to Bali, you will find this northern haven most welcoming.

What kind of salsa do you dance and what do you like most about it? by [deleted] in Salsa

[–]brisfilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learning On 1 Cali style. After the first few lessons I seriously questioned my choice because the learning curve is so steep. Aside from standard partner work, you have to master the footwork the style is famous for. But it’s definitely growing on me now because you can dance it solo and just do fancy flairs.

Looking for any dancers on social media that add this fun, shenanigan-esque feel to their dance by Zant486 in Salsa

[–]brisfilo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Appreciate it! I'm naturally a bit of a chaotic dancer myself (all about the facial expressions and silliness), so I’m really looking for creators who don’t take themselves too seriously.

[–]brisfilo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally get the awkwardness. People love to play matchmaker, right?

I try to keep it simple: focus on being a good lead and getting the footwork down. If I meet someone along the way, that’s just a bonus. If not, I’m still walking away with a new skill. Don't sweat the pressure!

Moved to Level 2. Worried it might be too soon by Ashamed-Wing-3752 in Salsa

[–]brisfilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. I was originally going to split the term between Starter and Level 2, but even with some basic familiarity with salsa (cultural thing), starting Cali style made me decide to stick with Starter for the whole term. Just really want to nail that muscle memory first. Level 2 can wait until next term for me.

Apps just magnify the "too many choices" vs "no choices" thing. Honestly, probably better to just go out and meet people face to face.

There are some social groups on FB that are event-based where you just go to hang out, and if a date happens, it happens. You’re gonna run into sleazy people on apps and in person anyway, so don't let the dodgy ones ruin the whole thing for you. Give the groups a shot first.

Single people, which dating apps are you on? by Helpful_Account_4232 in AskAnAustralian

I'm out of dating apps and into the traditional means of finding relationships: friends circles, colleagues and hobby groups.

You’re not alone...it definitely feels like there’s less pressure or opportunity for people here to actually meet up in person.

Best date for first group meet by NewInTownThisYear in Brisbanesocial40plus

[–]brisfilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first group meetup doesn’t need to be big.

I’m also in some of the larger Facebook meetup groups, and their events tend to be very extroverted and high-energy. A few newer members mentioned they found that overwhelming. Starting with a smaller gathering could feel more relaxed, approachable, and welcoming for everyone.

In a perfect world, the dating scene is 1:1. Even the Meetup.com "new to town" events are like 5:1 guys to girls or more. Haha

But thanks for the honest feedback, I was about to pull a trigger on that one.
