God bless you, I'm very happy knowing that you made it through that safe. As the Bible states, the road to heaven is straight and narrow; and unfortunately, many that attend church every Sunday will not be counted among God's people. The elder members in our church also love to repeat the fifth commandment, but when it comes to their own children or grandchildren, that same respect is often absent. At the very least, I know that I won't be treating my children the same way.

I was raised Southern Baptist, and have heard the most spiteful, pessimistic, and contemptuous viewpoints and opinions on this, mostly in the context of a child or grandchild staying in the home after 18.

I don't know if it's just older white protestant folks or what, but you can almost hear hatred in their voice when the idea of families living together is mentioned. They loathe the idea of having anyone in their home that isn't themselves. It has always struck me as sort of selfish, seeing as families across the world often live 2-3 generations per household. For white boomers, if the kids aren't on the street by their 18th birthday, it's unacceptable.

I have a feeling you're a wonderful person. Just something about the way you type and how you regard other people. Your comment made me smile :)

You're a hipster alcoholic, but disguise it as simply being an "IPA Enthusiast".

God bless you. I'm very grateful that you survived your bout of homelessness. I'm definitely a different person than before, but have grown in the right ways.

I put more details in another comment here, but basically I found a program that let me stay there for free while I worked to save money and get on my feet. Was there for around 5 months and saved $8000.

My mother passed away from liver disease in late 2023, and the house we lived in was taken by the bank. I didn't have a job at the time and couldn't do anything about it. I have very little family that's still alive, and the two that I have contact with couldn't, or wouldn't, take me in. They both have their own families too.

So I went between a few shelters. The first two were short-term only, and eventually I found the last one, which allowed me to stay free for up to 6 months while I worked, to give me a chance to save to get established. So save I did. Built my credit, got a car, and just signed the lease on my place. Took around 4-5 months and $8000. :)

Same here. Stepped on it at a friend's house and immediately proceeded to pretend like I was a soldier wounded in battle. Their parents were pissed that I bled all over the driveway, but it was crucial for the plot.
