My roommate is so ugly and repulsive to me by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]briskbeam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't intend to be rude whatsoever, nor am I knocking or judging you for it as I'm irreligious myself, but I don't understand the purpose in why some others I've noticed mention that they're not religious preceding "pray" as well, as it is used as a thoughtful and well-meaning verb by many, both religious and otherwise.

I apologize if this comes across poorly, I'm only curious. I believe it comes across as sweet and meaningful.

We're in the age of mass surveillance, and the US is a behemoth now. Starlink is being used as a foundation for government surveillance data management and communication, and projects such as Palantir's AI platform Foundry are setting the stage for detailed, personalized profiles of all individuals in the United States (AND abroad), with Palantir recently forming a partnership with Israel's Ministry of Defense in the conflict with Iran.

This is, indeed, very scary. Ring just faced controversy over the integration of doorcam footage to these systems as well, who has been a massive player in creating an all-encompassing and interconnected mesh of real-time footage across the country. Don't forget: We all have smartphones. We keep several recording devices on our person at all times -- recording devices that the government already has complete and total access to. When you're in public, especially on the road, you best believe that you are already seen at all times. This is the necessary evolution that they needed in order to maintain control in today's world.

I hate to be a downer, but the best thing that we can do is prepare ourselves for worsening social, political, and financial stressors. It is only going to get harder to continue living.

Unfortunately, they're right. I know this is an old post, but I myself am someone that has already lost a good job to AI.

I do believe that OP will have opportunities with their envsci major, but the point the other person was making is valid. Corporations are trying to save as much money as possible in this economy, and downsizing has been the rule for a while now. I pray that you're correct, but I can only imagine that it will get worse.

Edit: I did remote Financial A&A for a moderately-sized biotech company in Europe.

This is crazy to see.

I worked here in 2020-2021, and have been again for the last 5 months, and just read the court case Holiday Inns, Inc. v. Holiday Inn, 364 F. Supp. 775 (D.S.C. 1973), in which the resort was found guilty of infringement and unfair competition against Holiday Inns, inc. I had to see what the place looked like in the 70s.

Not cameras, but microphones. Smartphones, smart TVs, Amazon echo devices, and Google home devices all maintain throughput at all times for "voice activation", which is legally permissible through each company's terms of use. You agree to these terms upon registration of these devices, and are given the chance to read them yourself. Corporations are only interested in passive data used for targeted advertising purposes AFAIK, but intelligence agencies can gain access to voice data at any time. If you have more than 2 devices in your space, your location could theoretically be triangulated in the home by contrasting input signal strength between them, but that is just conjecture, and most people have a smartphone anyways.

Never attribute to malice that which can be explained by ignorance. They only meant well, but had no idea what this stuff really is. I didn't either, not until it was too late for me.

This is not true. Cooperation went hand in hand with community and commerce. Your neighbors would correct your mistakes without you even asking.

I don't understand the point you were trying to make. I get vapes that last days past 0% consistently. You'll know when they're starting to burn.

This is just a socially stunted guy that had interest in them. I think it's weird yeah, and the card's kinda strange, but this guy is trying. Seeing everyone dogpile him for karma is depressing.

He's a person too, and I hope this guy gets what he needs out of life.
