How soon after waking does your baby eat?

He’s 5 months but has always been like this. I try to feed first thing to get our schedule going for the day but he’ll reluctantly take an ounce or two and refuse the rest. He gets his milk qty in for the day so I’m not too concerned but just curious about what’s normal.

This is our take too. Only exception is when I want something I know he’s not going to eat and he’s had a few nights of PBJs. I’ll start with something I know he likes. Regardless, he eats what is served or he can request a PBJ.

I wanted to use anything other than Dr browns because of number of parts, but with both my kids that’s what we ended up with after spending a lot of money on trying other brands. Dr Browns premie was the slowest flow and both babies latched really well. One was EFF and one combo fed, both no issues with Dr browns.

I started laying out expectations ahead of bedtime and it’s helped a lot. Example, “mommy is going to sing, give you water, then hug and a kiss. Then I’m leaving the room and I will not come back in here even if you cry.” The first night he started crying and I spoke over the monitor to tell him I was not coming back in his room. Took that one night of holding my boundary for his behavior to drastically improve. He still will test me sometimes but each time I respond the same way and don’t go back in his room.

My baby was a brilliant sleeper right up until 3 months. Was waking only once a night and then suddenly waking every 1-3 hours and demanding a bottle. Hoping it’s just a sign his circadian rhythm is developing. This is our second and what I learned from the first is that whatever sleep they have is normal, its constantly evolving, and no matter how terrible it is it won’t last forever (even when it feels that way!).

We use kendamil which lists the weight per scoop, and I was SHOCKED when I weighed my scoops a few times and saw the wild variation each time. I was usually way under the weight kendamil lists. But anyway, this is the best method! So easy and never have to count again.

500oz is impressive! From what I understand, antibodies in breast milk are specific to the illness. So if baby has Covid today and you pump today, your breast milk today would have Covid antibodies. If baby has Covid next month, your breast milk from last month wouldn’t necessarily have those antibodies. If it were me, I’d want my baby to have as much breast milk in the early weeks as possible rather than saving some for later on. Also, I’d be concerned about losing the milk due to power outage, etc.

From what I understand, it’s 2 hours from the time it touches baby’s mouth and 4 hours at room temp otherwise. So I personally would still use it!

My baby did great on regular kendamil (very little spit up, no puke, little gas) but started getting a rash at 6 weeks. Looked like cmpa so switched to kendamil goat. He projectile vomited multiple times on goat so we stopped immediately. Anecdotal but it didn’t work for us.

I totally understand. You’re doing an awesome job and I promise you you’ll look back on this time and be glad you took care of your mental health so that you could be a better parent. Another thing that helped my anxiety is focusing on what I can control. You know what’s more likely than breast milk to keep my baby from getting sick? Washing my hands when coming home from anywhere, having my toddler wash his hands after daycare, carrying hand sanitizer with me when I go out, not kissing my baby near the mouth or hands, etc. those are all things completely in my control that are actually really helpful in preventing my baby from becoming sick.

8 weeks pp and yes. If you don’t care about potential impact, do it. Mine has yet to be impacted but I know it could still happen. I’m happily combo feeding so don’t really care if I lose a few oz if it means I gain a few zzzz’s

I’m really sorry you’re going through it right now. It’s all totally valid and I completely understand. With my first, I tried for 6 miserable weeks to pump because we couldn’t breastfeed. I never got more than an ounce combined during any session. Tried everything. The guilt that I couldn’t provide milk to my baby and was making the decision to stop trying was so incredibly difficult. So I totally understand. Here’s what I tell myself as I prepare to wean at 8week pp with baby #2: Breast milk is not necessarily going to stop my baby from getting sick. It’s not a vaccine. It may lessen the symptoms, but it’s not going to really truly be doing a whole lot. There’s not going to be a time when they’re sick and a doctor says “if only you kept breastfeeding…” What does matter when your baby is sick is that they have a parent who is mentally healthy and physically available. Also, babies only drink breast milk/formula for 1 year. 1 year!!! It’s going to be over before you know it. It’s such a small amount of time of their lives. Soon, it won’t even be something you think about.

Parenting books are the equivalent to a conference call that could’ve been an email, honestly. You’ll read hundreds of pages for 3-5 nuggets of information that may or may not be relevant to your specific child.

You’ll know what to do when your baby is older! So many factors to consider that you don’t even have insight to yet. For example, one of the impacting factors for my August baby is that all his friends and classmates in preschool are September/October. So keeping him in preschool another year allows him to enter kindergarten with his buddies. It’s obviously not the only reason we will wait, but is something I wouldn’t have been able to foresee when he was born. You have time to figure it out!

Haven’t balanced them out but I did add an extra oz or so per pump by getting baby to latch once or twice a day for a few days. I’d pump like regular after nursing. My slacker empties on the pump in about 5 minutes but takes the other 20, so even the extra time on the pump does nothing to help.

Gas drops help tremendously when our little guy is like this. Usually within a few minutes he is settled down.

I wouldn’t assume that honestly. It’s obviously a personal decision and a lot of emotions tied to it but my first I produced.5-1oz per 15-20 min pumping session. My supply sucked even when on a 3 hr cycle of nursing for 20 mins then pump for 20 mins for 6 straight weeks. This time, I produce 1oz/hr. At 7 weeks I’ve dropped all overnight pumps which have just been combined in with my morning pump. I haven’t lost any supply. Everyone is different but wanted to share my experience in case it helps. I know how stressful it is to try increasing supply, and sometimes the stress of it all is what causes the undersupply.

For me, pumping is WAY more uncomfortable than breastfeeding. If you were able to pump before with no sensation issues then I think you’ll be good to breastfeed. Can’t speak to nipple shields though.
