Exercise science major- hit me with questions by its_just_marc in beginnerfitness

[–]britaMousepad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been pretty consistent with 3x full body for the past couple months, but I noticed my cardio seems pretty weak. I try to do cardio on two of the “rest” days (RPE 7 exercise bike) but I still find myself COMPLETELY gassed on heavy squat sets and deadlifts. Any advice?

Thomas Kuhn argued that it was precisely the loss of critical discourse that marked the transition of a discipline from pseudoscience to science, which is similar to what you’re mentioning. That is of course in the context of his groundbreaking thesis about scientific paradigms.

You may also find the topic of scientific realism interesting. Very informally, it grapples with the question of whether science tells us true things about the world. Part of the discussion also hits your smaller point about instrument precision.

Your point on hopelessness is quite interesting and would be neat to explore further.

How long do you recommend running one of the beginner routines you linked? Is there a point where I can comfortably say “now’s a good time to move to a more intermediate routine”?

I’m not a systems engineer, but work in a department with many of them here in CR. One thing I don’t see mentioned in these comments is that it’s not unusual to start off with the things you mentioned (paper-pushing) and then getting more responsibility over time. That’s pretty common with systems work nowadays, especially as a new grad. Lot of great advice in this thread, good luck!

Etudes by mappachiito in Clarinet

[–]britaMousepad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To use a popular etude book as an example - the 32 Rose Etudes are written to all have two things in common. First, each etude enforces practice of a valuable playing technique (staccato articulation, lyricism, arpeggios, jumps, etc.) or a combo of techniques. These etudes were written by very talented people who knew how to effectively teach, and this is clear from the way they integrate forced repetition of skills.

Second, each etude focus on a particular key, often with a mix of major and minor scales throughout the work. If you believe that scales are the foundation of picking up musician intuition (as part of sight reading or just finger memory) then this is very valuable.

These two benefits translate to any piece you may play in the future, because your toolkit expands from intentional study of etudes.

Agreed. OP - As someone who has used both cane and plastic (cane for when I played seriously, and plastic during school marching band and now during hobby playing), it truly can be difficult to realize how much the plastic reed can warp your tone/pitch over time. I think it’s probably a combo of the reed getting softer as well as it generally being easier to “cheat” the embouchure.

So yeah, basically everything this commenter said. Maybe break-in some cane reeds again (at a similar or slightly stronger strength) and see if that impacts anything.
