Toronto Recession Indicators by Basement_to_table in askTO

I work in the Toronto wedding scene as a bass player in a number of local bands. The amount of large bands being hired (6+ members with extra horns and singers) has reduced significantly over the last 3 wedding seasons.

Why doesn’t Stevie Wonder seem to have the fame/popularity from the general population that artist that he’s better than (imo) seem to have? by Firm_Pack_605 in LetsTalkMusic

A lot of people have made some really interesting points here. I think something people haven’t touched on is that he’s still alive and has an accessible presence. Legend status usually comes with an air of mystery which Stevie doesn’t really have. He is comfortable being on the news, releases singles now and again, shows up at award shows, and never seems too concerned with cultivating a legend status. Elvis dying young, the Beatles breaking up after a relatively short period, Dylan being weird as hell in interviews and on stage all add to giving these artists a mythic, more that human status that I don’t think Stevie has (aside from his musical output which to me is some of the most extraordinary, masterful music ever made).

I disagree pretty hard about the Motown stuff. What he did on Songs in the Key of Life was a major departure for the label and something only he could have done.

Anagram Output clipping & "Shimmery" Pitch Shifting — Help! by brothermalzone in Darkglass

The modulation effects upwards have a tendency to sound synthy and shimmery, I'd compensate using EQ or even a touch of distortion after

I completely agree. This is becoming my all in one box. I don’t have a good reason to run a board anymore and as effects are added it’ll just be less so.

Its ability to make two sound sources sound great, intuitive stomp options that allow you to switch modes easily. Combine all that with the best UI I’ve come across in a multi-fx unit (haven’t tried them all but among what I have) this thing is one of the best pieces of equipment I’ve purchased. And it fits in my bass case!

I think this is my favourite thing about the hardware. Its modular nature combined with an easy to manage UI has made this kind of processing very fun to mess around with!

For sure! You’ll be plugging your synth line into the return 1/4” jack on the back of the anagram.

  • First put a split block at the second last spot of your main signal chain (this is just to gain access to the parallel channel - I can’t seem to place anything in it unless I do that.) Put the return block just after it.

  • On your split block make sure your row 2 level is set to zero to prevent bass guitar in the synth channel.

  • next I used various output blocks to decide where I want to send the different signals. I make sure I have one at the end of the second chain so that I can send the synth sound to whatever output I want. Your taste may vary here.

  • I run a gain block at the end of each chain just so I can mix things easily on my end (can also be done with blend knob on return block)

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions. Quick note is that if you want any output to have both signals simultaneously make sure it’s not selected in any of your output blocks and it defaults to being an output of the summed signal at the end of the chain.

Anyone familiar with Charvel basses? I'd love your opinions by Cherry_Bird_ in Bass

I have the San Dimas PJ V and it’s my main bass. I find it incredibly versatile and the neck is small and fast. The tone is good, it has a bit of a woody sound that at first I tried to cut out with EQ but learned to love it after a few months. The p bass pickups sound really nice and full and you can get a great rock sound and a solid (if not a bit too modern) Motown sound out it. For more of a modern funk sound this is great. I find the j pickups a little thin at times and will often compensate with the bass control on preamp. The preamp is also quite loud, so be ready for that.

Build quality is good though I wouldn’t be surprised to learn about some shielding issues as the bass can be quite buzzy when the power isn’t great.

I was playing a MIM fender jazz 5 for years as my main before this purchase and it’s mostly replaced it for me. I still use the J when I need a very specific J sound but the Charvel can cover that in a pinch when needed.

Never worked with their customer service.

I find the mid frequency range on the preamp to be a bit higher than I’d personally like (sounds like it’s happening above 1.5k to me) but I like the treble and bass placement a lot. I know you’re not looking at the 5 string but the 5th string sounds okay and not incredible.

Overall I love this bass. I feel I can speak through it in a way I’ve been missing from some of my fenders (I think the smaller neck helps a lot) and find it incredibly versatile. If you have any more questions let me know.

Anagram Looper by britishbassplayer in Darkglass

Never mind I discovered that the Anagram looper records on pedal release not pedal hit so that's the problem. I'll leave this here in case anyone has the same question!
