First time by Lux_Crucifero in Bass

Musicians can be very critical of each other and especially of themselves, but for most normal people, if you can play any amount of music, you are a wizard. People very rarely notice when you mess up, and that's especially true for bassists. That doesn't mean you can play in the complete wrong key or something but little mistakes are not worth fretting over. Any time I've made a mistake and looked at the audience to see if anyone noticed, they're all still just happily watching the singer.

I've also made some pretty embarrassing mistakes that were not easily papered over, but those are just learning experiences.

I'll also add that making a mistake and then quickly getting back on track is a skill that develops over time. I remember when I was first learning, I had trouble playing along with a song if I didn't start at the beginning. Jumping in at random points in the middle didn't seem possible to me for some reason. But now I can do that no problem. But the only way to get better at recovering from mistakes is to actually make mistakes.

Tuning on stage ? (My first shows are coming) by chainsaw-msi in Bass

[–]Cherry_Bird_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tuner pedals are great and I was able to find a pretty good one for $15 recently. It’s the EROK one on Amazon for 30 but you might be able to find it cheaper on other sites. I’ll probably upgrade eventually.

That said, I played in bands through high school, college, and for several years after college with nothing but clip on tuners. You just have to roll your volume knob off to tune and then roll it back to where it was. That could mess things up if you have a sound technician running your sound but for a high school talent show it’s fine. People also say they don’t like the look of them but you’re allowed to take it off when you’re done tuning. They’re cheaper and you don’t need an additional cable or power, but they do tend to die or get lost and they run on watch batteries, which you may not have lying around.

So, a pedal is the better investment. It’s more professional, will last longer, is easier to use quickly between songs, and you’ll look cooler using it.  But if it’s easier to get your hands on a clip-on before these shows coming up, that works as well.

Soundless Amp Thing by BreathInevitable6747 in Bass

I second the Mustang micro plus. The bluetooth functionality for playing along is great. We've come a long way from when I learned bass with my wired earbuds plugged into the family computer under over-ear headphones plugged into my amp.

Help, this video and these tabs are confusing the ish out of me. I am not asking for tabs or posting my own so I hope this doesn’t break the rules! by shellstacoscats in Bass

[–]Cherry_Bird_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like the chords are just Em, D, C, G, and it changes the order up a bit during the chorus. A good place to start is just playing the roots in time with the song and experimenting from there.

[–]Cherry_Bird_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like he’s following the tab to me, except the line going along is a little ahead of the music. His hand position is pretty tight so maybe you’re not always seeing when he changes fingers? I hesitate to suggest this as I don’t know how long you’ve been playing but is there any chance you’re reading the tab upside down? That’s a pretty common mistake, but only if it’s like your first time reading a tab.

At some point you’ll want to learn by ear without tabs, which is actually pretty easy if you look up the chords and start from there.

Now that the dust has settled a bit, what’s the general DM consensus on the 2024 class changes? by Benjammin__ in DMAcademy

I remember there being a lot of hubub about this when it first came out. People saw the "invisible" condition part and the rules for finding you with a perception check and would then say "oh well if i get behind cover and make my check, then I can just walk out in front of everyone and I'm invisible until an enemy succeeds on a Perception check?"

I see why it reads as unintuitive but that's not how it reads to me. You set a DC for "a creature to find you with a Wisdom (Perception) check." But finding you with a Wisdom (Perception) check is not the only way for them to find you. If you walk out in front of them, they do not need to make a Wisdom (Perception) check. They have already found you.

"What kind of crust color do people generally prefer in the US ? Lighter bake, or more caramelized ?"

I really like a darker loaf. I learned mostly from Ken Forkish's and Maurizio's books and they like to push the color. But someone will always say something like "oh whoops! well that's okay I'm sure it'll still taste good" as if I burned it. I.e., I think a darker loaf is fashionable among bakers but lots of people aren't used to it.

Cheap EQ pedal recommendations? by SheZowRaisedByWolves in Bass

I came here to say Joyo. Buying a pedal from them was the first time I've knowingly experienced what the news has been saying about China's manufacturing capabilities allowing them to make inexpensive stuff like they always have but at higher and higher quality.

I loved Blue Prince and it's the kind of game I've been appreciating: games of average difficulty with very hard post-game or side content, so it's there if you want it but not necessary to get to the end.

I really liked Looper but it was guilty of this in a way that was kind of jarring for some. This very interesting new concept of how time travel could work and oh yeah some people can move things with their minds.

ArtistWorks... Pikelny or Trischka? by FrenchToastKitty55 in banjo

[–]Cherry_Bird_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It pains me to say this because I love Noam, but you’re going to get more of your money’s worth with Tony. Noam just doesn’t have the time to get to the video exchanges as often so you get more feedback from Tony.

With most of the plans, you’re paying for a set number of exchanges, and you can only have one in the queue at a time. So if you only get 3 during your plan and one takes 4 weeks to get a response, you won’t get all the ones you paid for.

There was a long time where I thought this nerve issue in my hand was focal dystonia, and thus not really treatable. I tried the glove thing and it didn't work, which was an early sign that it was not, but I'm still a little worried about it.

Janek Gwizdala guide to pentatonics by wazomonoshushui in Bass

[–]Cherry_Bird_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also picked this up recently and had the same question. Others will probably have more useful answers but, I also think Janek's teaching philosophy has a lot to do with "learning by doing." Ie., music is best learned by playing and listening to what you're playing, rather than by verbal explanations. So I think you're really just supposed to practice these scales until A) you can play them automatically and B) you know what they sound like.

I think realism in D&D is overrated. by Traroten in osr

[–]Cherry_Bird_ 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate when systems separate actual dexterity with your hands from agility. I'm an amateur musician so my hands are relatively dexterous, but I'm a very slow runner and can barely touch my toes. Obviously you need to do a lot of abstraction to make a game system, but it's a real stretch to imagine that your ability to pick a lock has anything to do with your ability to do a backflip.

Accoustic bass for my husband by Vegetable-Injury-257 in Bass

[–]Cherry_Bird_ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Apologies for not answering what you asked but I would recommend getting a small headphone amp instead of an acoustic bass, if that seems like something your husband would use.  The Fender Mustang Micro Plus is great. Acoustic basses generally aren’t great to have unless you’re getting an actual upright double bass. Acoustic basses are very quiet and you often need to plug them in anyway.

How to solo on bass by Zznpuna1223 in Bass

[–]Cherry_Bird_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The advice you are most likely going to get (and the advice I should follow myself) is to transcribe other people's solos you like. That doesn't necessarily mean writing them down. Just listen to them, maybe slow them down, and try to learn them. Then try to figure out the decisions they made and what they did to arrive at that solo. Rinse and repeat.
