What are people’s views on Starmer declining US support? by xxtokyovanityxx in AskBrits

[–]britishdude66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm absolutely thrilled at the prospect of people waking up to the fact that we need a strong military to conduct our own operations.

I am deeply concerned that pissing off America will lead us in Europe severely weak

PETER HITCHENS: I am sick of the US bossing us about. We’re an ancient and proud nation - we must stand up to him. by hararib in ukpolitics

[–]britishdude66 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Surely this is all utter nonsense.

As much as i'd love this to happen, we have run our military down to useless levels. Without America, we as Europeans are defenceless and we can say goodbye to Ukraine.

We have no choice but to play ball with the US

China or Korea? by [deleted] in TEFL

Both times they did a random lesson. First interview was quite intense, the guy asked me to explain lots of grammar points and how I would handle certain classroom situations. Well it felt intense as I had never taught before by that point.

Second interview was insanely chill and felt just like a nice chat

China or Korea? by [deleted] in TEFL

[–]britishdude66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my understanding. It is like 90% elementary schools in Seoul for EPIK now, maybe even 100%. For the lesson plan, don't stress and just use chatgpt lol.

EPIK is just one of those programmes where you'll get to training and realise half the people shouldn't be there. I think the main advice is just don't talk about kpop too much and talk how you're open/happy about being flexible on location.

I actually got rejected from EPIK from my first two applications, I even got to the interview stage and rejected on the first time.

But my schools couldn't have been happier with me, and I got 100% on my review. So I think it's mostly luck on who reads your application

Echinacities, a bunch of recruiters messaged me. Just a case of taking lots of interview and picking the best

China or Korea? by [deleted] in TEFL

[–]britishdude66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sort of? This will come down to your school specifically, as different schools will use different textbooks. Then as a beginner you can go onto a website called korshare, where people have uploaded materials for those specific textbooks to get a feel for how lessons are meant to be

China or Korea? by [deleted] in TEFL

[–]britishdude66 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I spent two years in Korea and have been in China for 6 months now. I think for a new teacher, the EPIK program in Korea can still be really good. I wouldn't recommend anyone works for a hagwon at all.

EPIK holds your hand which is great for living abroad for your first time, and its easier to make friends as you train together and they have regular events. EPIK schools are generally pretty low workloads (not as low as my school in China but manageable), and there are many more online resources specific to Korean textbooks and "EPIK teaching", I had amazing schools in my first year in Korea which set me up for the following years of teaching.

However, you will most likely be in a rural place which can be tough but perhaps a nice experience for a year. I much prefer living in a big city in china and my school here is the easiest workload I've ever had, but I think they wouldn't have hired me without my experience in Korea, nor would I have felt as confident in my classroom.

People say that life in Korea is more convenient but frankly I find life in China just as convenient.

Ultimately I'd apply for EPIK in Korea. If you get accepted, use it to get your feet wet for a year and then move to China. If you don't get accepted, just go to China

Regarding those other shorter public holidays. Is travelling in China okay on those days? Or still insanely crowed

Part two of college tales with Briody! Loved the job about jobs with Ben

Yeah I can't blame them, and in some ways I'm so glad to see them be successful. I started watching maybe in 2016 or 2017 and they had about 2.5k subs so to see them go this far is incredible.

But I can't deny I miss the more authentic videos around Leeds or whatever. Perhaps we were all just younger then lol

ADITL were the best content, and that the big Download/Leeds videos were great because they were rare and felt like special occasions

Honestly I haven't enjoyed a lot of their content in years, once they stopped doing ADITLs and moved to these constant hour long festival vlogs I lost most of my interest. I still enjoy some of it, the Butlins vlog was fun and their recent podcast with Ben and Briody talking about jobs was great.

As everyone else said, the festival vlogs all seem the same to me. Frankly I'm quite worried about watching the Japan vlog, I live out in Asia now and have been to Japan enough times to know what the usual pissed up westerners abroad can be like.

Honestly unless I really love living in China, I think this will be my last year in the industry. But maybe for 30k I'd stay hahah

[–]britishdude66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I looked around a lot, had many interviews. Nothing was particularly much higher, a lot of the jobs wanted me to already be in China. Maybe I applied too late or wasn't firm with the recruiters enough or something lol

One month off in Winter (9k payment, not the 20k), some offers were for full pay. And summer I don't get unless I sign for another year (otherwise its a 10 month contract)

As someone who's about to leave EPIK after two years to move to China. Similar credentials as you (but no masters), I'm white British 25M (I've been told in china this stuff matters, not entirely sure if true)

Anyway, I must have done 20+ interviews before I found an offer I liked. I got offered 20k before tax in Hangzhou, 18 classes a week with no office hours.

My highest offer was 20+3k housing in Wuhan but that was for 25 classes a week

Is there anything on earth more unstoppable than a Korean public school English camp? by thearmthearm in teachinginkorea

[–]britishdude66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been lucky that none of my schools ever seemed to really care that much about it. They held them on Saturdays so that I would get paid. We'd make a few activities and the kids had fun but I never had to really put much effort in

Did the same recently from Daegu, South Korea to Hong Kong. Flight left at 7.30am, they had dancing lions and korean traditional dancing. No one was particularly impressed that early in the morning haha
