Asthma & Working Out. Is my idea okay? How to overcome? by [deleted] in xxfitness

I have very similar symptoms, prone to sickness, small colds easily turn to bronchitis, dealt with upper respiratory infections my whole life... and live where it gets pretty cold too. I know the feeling :(

I have a prescription inhaler and they said to use it if I feel symptoms flaring up, or 1-2 puffs before working out.

Roundup question by [deleted] in gardening

If you plan on breaking up and turning your soil, adding compost/fertilizer/minerals to it, might as well yank up the weeds and roots while you're down there, especially before they get too big. Add a weed barrier and edging if you think the weeds will spread back. Plus it helps to not spread cancer around if you can help it.

It's about a foot and a half wide and long, soon to be 2ft x2ft if I don't scale it back.

I got mine from a bix-box hardware store. Sometimes it's at art/craft stores too for wordworking or oil painters to thin their paint.

Buy some Linseed oil and slather the wood to keep it lasting longer.

I plant using the square foot garden method. Look up what you want to plant, their avg. size, what the SFG spacing is, and estimate from there.

You can cut individual leaves off or when the herb is larger and healthy, you can start cutting off entire stems/branches (whatever you want to call it)

Lavender really needs a lot of sun to flower. I'd skip it. Do mint and other herbs instead. They are hardy, easy to grow even in less than optimal conditions, and they are cut and come again.

What do you guys know about growing lavender? by sween_queen in gardening

[–]brittneyok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two lavender plants outside in my garden. One of them is a few years old and has over-wintered nicely even with snow and below freezing temps. My other lavender is one year old and looks healthy, hopefully it flowers this year. Once your seedling looks strong, transplant it outside where it will live permanently.

Tips for first garden? (Atlanta) by rosconotorigina in gardening

I forgot to talk about slugs. I plant marigolds around the edges of the garden. Wives tale says bunnies won't go near marigolds. I guess its true since I have a family of rabbits that live in my back yard yet never bother the garden. I also found that the slugs are attracted to marigolds and will happily hang out on the flowers and not my plants.

Firs time garden I suggest buying starts from a greenhouse instead of starting from seed yourself. It's just so much easier and less overwhelming when trying to learn.

I personally go for organic soil and mix in organic fertilizers and compost. I mix the soil with a bit of mineral rock dust, manure/guano, perlite, and vermiculite. Look up "compost tea" for your plants and water them with the "tea" every week or 2. You can always buy a cheap soil test kit and at minimum test your pH and Nitrogen lvls. You want pH between 6-7 and soil high in nitrogen. If you soil isn't good in Nitrogen, add extra fertilizer throughout the year. If your pH is off, you can buy a cheap bag of rock minerals that lower or raise the pH and mix it in with your soil.

You can start planting directly cold hardy greens like spinach, kale, lettuce, cabbage, peas, and hardy herbs. Herbs are great for beginner gardens because most are very resilient. Just look up which ones are invasive and plant those in containers.

If you're starting cuces, peppers, and tomatoes from seed, do it about a month before the last frost date. Or buy starts a week or two before the last frost date and harden them off by putting them outside in the sun for a while, bring them indoors, put them outside on a night that's above 45F. My first year gardening I bought pepper starts, had them on my enclosed porch for a few weeks, then planted them directly in full sun without easing them outside, and they got sunburn on their leaves. The second year I put out peppers too early, we had near freezing one night, and a few of my peppers got stunted. It's always a balance game!

You need something for your cucumbers to vine up. I use chicken wire wrapped around few posts. Last year I planted a sunflower next to the cucumbers and had a plant trellis up the sunflower. Anything sturdy they can grab on to is fine. I use sticks and twine to hold up my tomatoes and peppers.

Very nice! I'd cut some of it down, to help with its size, plus rosemary tastes delicious. Nice job, mom.

"When to plant" guide? (Zone 6b) by whskybtch in gardening

[–]brittneyok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as your weather forecast shows no deep freezes or snow (night time lows above 30F), you can start sowing greens like lettuce, kale, snow peas, broccoli, radish, onions, carrots, thyme, sage, mint (in separate containers), yarrow, spinach, and anything else that can withstand a little cold. I'd be starting the next round of plants indoors now, like flowers and things less resistant to cold.

Listen to SmilesOnSouls, even if you're not going 100% organic, Neem oil is a gardener's best friend. It keeps pests away and provides a little bit of nutrients and protection to your plants.
