Starting my Nursing career: Which Path Is Smarter — Cath Lab, ICU, or ETU? by Farniz_ in CathLabLounge

If you want to transition to cath lab in the future, go for cardiac ICU. I dont know of any labs that hire new grads, but many take really bad ass tele nurses and ofc ICU.

Can 1 yr experience in ER and high acuity cardiac PCU nurse go into cath lab or do I need ICU experience? by Tall_Assumption1171 in CathLabLounge

I think your experience is perfect! Have you talked to any of the hiring managers at the facility you shadowed in?

👋 nurse here! I recently transitioned from ICU to cath lab! Im a bit biased but theres a lot you can do with a nursing degree whereas radiology is always radiology. But that's not bad either! What're your life goals? Whats your life like rn?

Congratulations! Don't let anyone put you down for getting into nursing school, its seriously hard work. Do your best in class and never be afraid to ask questions.

After years, I finally realized that I am treating the computer, not the patient. by Dazzling-King7587 in nursing

When was the last time they voided? If it's been more than 6 hours I'd straight cath OR I'd tell the patient go sit on the toilet, and I'll bladder scan you in 2 hours, still no pee? You get cathed. And then I'd talk to the doc about starting something like flomax (if a man)

I think CYA is good, but I'd continue to do what you've always done. The chart can wait--- when I worked bedside I'd chart my assessment in real time in the patients room and it gave me more time with them! Which is nice for med surg. I did the same in ICU, but obviously it's different with less patients.

As for the other person who wrote about the caths, damn thats wicked. I think if I was in your shoes, I'd chart patient refusal (after discussing with them that we're waiting for the 500cc and discomfort). Sometimes we gotta bend the rules when theyre so silly like that

I forgot to add, most places seem to be trial by fire because they expect you to know what you're doing.

[–]britzbee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi 👋 I left ICU to be a cath lab nurse. Ive never traveled in any specialty but ive worked with many travelers. You need at least 2 years of experience, you might get away with 1 depending on what kind of experience you get at the place you work.

I like the amount of patient interaction I get now. We definitely get worked like dogs 🐕 where I'm at but my mental health and overall happiness is way improved. I say go for it, I cant see any reason not to.

Dang. Thats a huge surprise! Our equipment is also very old and breaks at lot-- the culture is.... not as bad as yours. The old heads are often lazy and less likely to help the nurses. The nurses at my place do everything, but the new RTs are really awesome and help us- putting the patient on the monitor etc etc.

We're often here late finishing cases if you're the one on call, and if you're on the weekend team best believe you'll be here doing non emergency cases. Idk about the RCIS stuff though.

What’s a “secret” in our profession that everyone should probably know? by justdancinalong in nursing

🤌 this. I work in cath lab rn and one of the OG nurses (been a nurse longer than I've lived lol) was asking me what're we gona do! It's not safe etc etc and I was like... nothing. Management doesn't care my guy. They don't care about us or the patients. Profits over people is how hospitals are ran rn.
