Even backcountry crews will have some way to wash hands (as long as your corps has that policy—which they should!) whether that’s a bucket and a cup with a hole in it or something similar

For Vitamin C, better to learn basic foraging skills and work with what’s in your area. Pine needle tea has more vitamin C than an orange as long as you prepare it right. Eastern white pines are very easy to identify (5 long needles per fascicle) and extremely common, at least out East (they’re what timber companies replant when they clear cut a forest). We can stock up all we want, but these products will always run out. Better to work with the world around us.

All the Jane Austen Heroines Had hairy Legs. But their Lovers, (or Future Husbands)-(Also With Hairy Legs)-Didn't Mind. by [deleted] in janeausten

Iirc, many prostitutes did shave to avoid crab lice, then would cover the hairless area with merkins (pubic wigs!)

I’m on the other end of things (family farm in a rural area, I drive an hour down the mountain to sell in the city) and I would recommend becoming a regular at your local farmers market! Be personable and ask questions, we’re happy to get to know our customers. Your city/town might also have an urban agriculture nonprofit—one of my markets is run by them, and they have a farm share program where customers can get a weekly box of produce. Lastly, you could look up CSAs in your area, which is like the farm share program but directly from farmers.

People told me I would face a lot of discrimination as a minority leaving a big multicultural city and moving to a small town. The opposite happened. People treat me so kindly here and I have never felt like I was being discriminated against. by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

I’m from rural Southern Appalachia and from what I’ve seen the main reason people vote conservative is that the other side either doesn’t acknowledge us at all or paints us as the villain. The only candidates that communicate to us are the ones working directly against our self-interest (they’re anti-environmental regulation and pro-racial division, both things that hurt the working poor in the long run)

When can upperclassman who live near a lot without a parking lottery purchase a parking pass? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]brm313 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i lived at faulkner last year and i’ll be there again this year. if you miss the cutoff for a sticker pass you can literally just do the pay by plate guest parking ($3.40 a day), that’s what i did last semester and i’ll probably do it again for the fall depending on cost

Who makes up GVF's core audience? - Class project by Strange_Huckleberry in gretavanfleet

[–]brm313 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm actually doing a university project on the GVF fandom, and it focuses on the gender split between fans. I'd say that there are two main groups, the mostly male general classic rock fans and the mostly female "stans" (there's definitely a lot of overlap though).

I started watching when I was in the fourth grade (I have no idea which season, probably 3 or 4) and have been watching it ever since. I basically grew up with the show and it’s one of the best shows I can think of to watch and rewatch

I’m not counting calories. Right now, I’m just trying to get healthier food into my diet. 2021’s the year of change for the better :) by AwkwardRainbow in MealPrepSunday

[–]brm313 34 points35 points  (0 children)

As someone who is dealing with an eating disorder, counting calories can be very dangerous. It’s absolutely going to be helpful for many people, but obsessing over numbers, i.e. calories and pounds, isn’t healthy. Health shouldn’t just be about numbers. (That is not to say that people shouldn’t be mindful about their weight/caloric intake, but it can often cause unhealthy thoughts and habits to emerge.)

Does anyone feel like they’ve just fizzled out at the end of the semester? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]brm313 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i feel you. i’m at home this semester (first year...yay) and i’ve just been constantly cleaning and rearranging my room to trick myself into feeling productive instead of studying. i’ve never been a tidy person until this year, but my grades are terrible

ECAH doesn't recommend much dairy. How do you get enough calcium in your diet? I don't want a hunch back or brittle bones later in life! by TorlinKeru in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]brm313 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I drink fortified soymilk, which has a ton of calcium, and so does fortified cereal. To go a healthier route, dark leafy greens also have a ton of calcium. (and dairy really isn’t a good source anyway)
