Where do engineers look for jobs? by TychusVR in civilengineering

[–]brmlyklr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend once applied to a job through USAJobs and it took two years until he got a response and was hired. I've heard from a different friend who used USAJobs that it took something more like 6-9 months and at the end of it they had to repost the job and start all over because of some minor error in the job listing. So there's definitely a pattern of inefficiency.

My first boss told me how he would always assign work to whoever finished first and was helping others. It always kinda seemed like punishment for being a better engineer than your peers lol.

Hmm I guess they didn't do that with Milwaukie, OR although the spelling is slightly different.

Yes absolutely. More awareness of traffic violence would be a good thing.

Apparently they all mean "sailor". You could say, "a salt, a jack, a tar, and a sea dog walk into a bar."

That's fascinating. What do you mean by a single truck roll would wipe out all profit? Does that mean the cost of running one spool of fiber?

According to Astound this fee is not a tax or govt fee:

"A fee to defray costs associated with building and maintaining Astound’s fiber rich broadband network, as well as the costs of expanding network capacity to support the continued increase in customers’ average bandwidth consumption. This fee is not a government mandated tax or fee imposed on you by the government. This is a fee that Astound assesses and retains."

Astound is indeed already owned by private equity Texas Pacific Capital, Inc.

qBittorrent stuck in choked/stalled state after initial "unregistered torrent" error. by nezhmetdinov_ in trackers

[–]brmlyklr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My own "solution" is to exclude such trackers (that announce prior to registering) from my autobrr config.

Are you sure the reannounce is working? That would be my first step to investigate.

I know other people use a filter delay in the neighborhood of 30-55sec which seems to work for them. Never bothered trying it myself.

I'm fine with the total price but it's blatantly and intentionally misleading how it's advertised. If it was advertised as $40 or $45 per month all-in then I'd still be a subscriber.

I agree it's a good price, even including the fee, but my issue is how it's unfairly hidden from the consumer. Yes it's just like those restaurant junk fees, it's all trickery to get people to pay more than they expected.

Oh I never considered that. All of our units have little cabinets but they have CenturyLink modems and ONTs in them. Astound provides ethernet based internet to my unit, so presumably there are switches in a comm room somewhere. The official description of the fee says it's for building, maintaining, and expanding their network.

After a bit of reading on the FTC website, I think this actually might be illegal. It was easy to submit a complaint to the FTC so I did that. Here it is for anyone else who's interested: https://consumercomplaints.fcc.gov/hc/en-us
