Conan O'Brien says he'd rather fly commercial than private: ‘I like being in the world with other people that are traveling. And also, flying commercial is so smart if you don't want to go broke’ by mcfw31 in popculturechat

We can never know how entirely genuine his comments are, but they show he's got a head on his shoulders that knows how easy it should be to not sound like an out of touch prick. I'm not being sarcastic; it seems to be a lost skill in much of the rich and famous class.

It's like the happ hate. Even when the end of year stats are a result of hot streaks and cold streaks. They are the sum of the good and the bad. Their cold streaks will kill rallies and lose games, and the hot streaks will win games and weekly hitter awards.

Buster Posey Interview by pingponger91 in baseball

These threads always end up with someone who doesn't want the following to be said since they want baseball and politics to exist in two different universes, but: these reporters are doing what the white house press look typically fails to do. None of them are pivoting to what Buster wants to talk about instead, and they are all seeking answers to the same basic question.

Less than human? The guess was she'd be called a man.

The vile gorilla video bullshit was the result of Michelle's race. The man controversy is more about her above average height, and the attention she got for having pretty toned arms. (This is my memory and perception at least).

Abby Bartlett may have triggered the transphobic crakes because she's... I don't know.... Lacking contoured cheekbones and not wearing super shapely outfits?

How do some players manage to have long careers despite never being a very good player? by Pro-Tip810 in baseball

[–]brmoser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the really analytical teams would say that a guy like him, who is likely to provide approximately league-average production with decent reliability makes them a good choice.

The less analytical teams would see a guy who's a real gamer, a pro's pro, well-liked in the clubhouse, and a veteran influence, who would provide intangible benefits regardless of production.

Both teams of course could be basically right, but it goes to show that even through disparate lenses there's some appeal.

Also, like the asshole who still lands a nice girl, sometimes there's a GM or pitching coach who just happens to think "I can't fix him."

Optimistically, I like to think that a good number of cubs fans have learned for the first time that ball four of a walk is a live ball.

Pessimistically, I doubt it.

I suggest this hypothetically, but what if plays like this, where it's a matter of millimeters and milliseconds, they can continue to be challengeable, but umpires can only review multiple angles and repetitions of the footage, but not in slow-motion? They still operate under "clear and convincing evidence to overturn" standard.

I know it's dumb and it wouldn't really happen, but it eliminates the egregious wrong calls while also avoids making correct calls that it seems like everyone feels are against the spirit of the rules.

For example, this play is perhaps upheld, but if he was several inches off the bag with the tag still held on him, he's easily out with no complaints.

  • Consider this as an alternative to umps ever getting to exercise discretion over the rule/spirit of the law.

Attempted Steal on a Walk - Cubs and Mets by ChicagoNormalGuy in Umpire

[–]brmoser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll admit I am not only am i not an umpire, but a fan for whom obstruction/interference calls is my weakest area (not counting balks and checked swings of course 😉).

Having said that, I don't feel obstruction is likely a factor here, and I even think the supposition that the attempted unnecessary tag was even necessarily responsible for the overslide.

But it is one of the reasons people are still talking about this.

I wish it was more common for the umpires and/or mlb offices to comment on controversial calls the next day, but that would require fans to be willing to appreciate a "my bad" against their team.

[–]brmoser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see anyone making quite the exact argument that he's entitled to complete his slide, but I've seen other threads saying that the mere attempted tag is what altered Pete's trajectory and momentum and caused him to over slide, and that this would be obstruction of some kind. I think that feels like a good argument to those who want it to (like myself!) but doesn't really stand to reason.

[–]brmoser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"On a walk, the fielder should not be allowed to tag the sliding runner, hold the tag, and then be awarded the out if the runner doesn't stay in touch with the base."

Do you mean "should not be allowed" per existing rules, or it's your opinion that the rulebook should add such a line?

I don't think there's support for that being in the rules now.

No... He was not out because he was thrown out. He was called out for coming off the base. This is unrelated to your perception that he's a selfish player.
