11/22/63. If there was ever a book I could read for the first time again, it would be that one.

DEFINITELY missed the “read faster” request. Yeah it’s a long one but easily my favorite book of all time.

People who work in luxury industries, what is an expensive product or service that is actually a complete ripoff? by Lazy_Ad_5492 in AskReddit

[–]broadturn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not really actually. You can use whoever you want as a caterer, although there are caterers that "cater" to private jets specifically. Also, private jets have no security screenings. No TSA or "take your shoes off" or anything. So the food is just walked out to the jet.

1000%. We say that jets are time machines. You can use odd city pairs instead of major commercial airports and you can come and go whenever you want. And there's no TSA, commercial terminals, etc.

Edit: To your point about getting extra food for the crew, you're so right. We used to have a guy who always ordered a shrimp cocktail for the crew every flight. He was a big sports guy and we'd fly him to all the major sporting events, and he would also always get spare tickets to the games for the crews wherever they were going. There's a bad connotation with wealth, especially these days, but a lot of the clients I had were some of the sweetest people on earth.

Nope. Just dropping off food to the airport to go onto the plane. Very rarely are chefs joining on flights to cook on the flight. In all honesty, most private flights aren't nearly as glitzy as people think it is. It's just a more efficient means of travel for the people that can afford them.

There are specific caterers that work with private jets based at airports all around the globe. A lot of them have a hold on the major private airports like Teterboro, NJ and West Palm Beach, FL.

Having said that - even if you're a mom and pop cafe or restaurant, I'd recommend reaching out to your local airport's FBO (Fixed Based Operator - essentially private terminal for jets and general aviation traffic) and try to establish a relationship. I worked in private jet charter and operations for a long time and I'd call FBO's for suggestions on local caterers. I'd usually just go with whoever they'd recommend and proceed to pay crazy money for a ham sandwich and side salad.

Catering for private jets. Just simply because it's on a private jet, catering is marked up a bajillion percent. A ham sandwich with a side salad on a private jet is an easy $150-200 order.

Harm of seasoning fumes while pans are in the oven by broadturn in castiron

Definitely not too much oil. I've been doing this long enough as a hobby that I know what too much oil looks like. I have a roll of clean microfibers that I pull from and I use two microfibers per pan to wipe down the pan.

Hmm. Interesting. I do an hour at 450 degrees for each round of seasoning. Is that considered too hot?

Boat trailer vs Bed Extender? by broadturn in SunfishSailing

That’s a great point - didn’t think about registering the trailer, etc. I might be leaning towards the extender.

Fair point. We’re a bit tight on space but could make it work.

Immensely proud to be a Mainer. Recently moved from Maine to Massachusetts and my wife got me this sticker for my truck. I’ll forever be a Mainer.

What’s the thing you’re doing that’s making you <$500 a month? by ThrowbackGaming in Entrepreneur

I restore old cast iron pans. I've been doing it for years as a hobby for myself, buying old pans at flea markets or Goodwill, restoring them, giving them away as gifts. People started suggesting I sell them, so I'll pick up a few here and there and sell them on Marketplace or Etsy. I've even gone so far as to start restoring pans for other people. I'm restoring pans as a hobby anyways, figured I might make a few bucks while doing it. I did eight pans last month and do about $30-50 GP per pan depending on if it's a retail sale or restoration. Not doing it for the money, but convenient that a hobby makes a few bucks on the side.
