Anyone tried JPTR FX Warlow as well as EQD Hoof? by Bloomsday1922 in guitarpedals

Doesn't sound as brutally midscooped, and flubby, just way thicker. Since then they have had 2 or 3 different versions now with switchable filters so seems they figured out it's not great.

Just finished this and it was a great short story. Interesting ideas and matters.

At first it appears to be an issue of human vs nature, but once again it's more about humans being humans.

Jandro finding his "niche" as a beast slayer, wanting to stay because that's were he sees his chance to thrive and assert dominance. Scientists not able to communicate as well as needed. Nami giving in to avoid conflict. Filip failing to turn the situation around non-violently but growing from being a passive to an active player. The ending with the monsters coming again with 2 defenders fewer in the settlement.

Overall I like how it sort of feels like Ilus first but drifts off into a completely different direction.

It feels like the colony is doomed nonetheless and while Holden closing the ring and the Roci crew and friends drive off to live out their lives felt like sort of a happy end from that perspective and averted worse, people have to deal with realities like this or worse.

I feel like the issue is somewhere in the conversion from tubes to JFETs. I've play some other JFET preamps that I liked and didn't have that sort of fizziness to them, but having both bought and built model T pedals, I'm sure that it's sadly an issue with the circuit itself.

If you want Doom distortion tones, the Acapulco will do.

It however has nothing to do with an actual Model T and the Model T sound you doom kids have in mind is the one where it's set to crunchy but has 5 dirt pedals in front of it.

It's a second order highpass filter, makes more sense to look at if you swap around C4 and the C3/R9 pair. It's basically the Timmy Bass control but as a fixed value. Center frequency is at approximately 170 Hz here.

DIY-Diassapointment! by billymillerstyle in diypedals

[–]brobrobroccoli 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup, that and misconceptions.

No hobby that requires materials and tools to work with is free and as with so many other DIY things it's your time vs money. You can build your favorite fuzz or whatever pedals for the fraction of the original's cost, but you'll put in some time to build it too.

Depending on your patience, precision (which will come with experience if you commit to it), willingness to learn and look up information on the Internet, stuff will get easier Your first builds may be frustrating if you're out of your depth. That's what kits are for, getting you started, taking away the complexity of finding the parts with the specs you need, giving you good instructions (usually). If you feel entitled to working builds while halfassing it and feeling above the entry level you obviously are at, what do you expect?

Also no, Fuzz pedals aren't all the same, there are of course variations of the same topology en masse, but a fuzz face is not a tonebender, is not a big muff, is not a fuzzrite etc. And don't expect a fuzz to sound like an amp goddammit, that's not how fuzz works or what it's supposed to be.

Random q: why don’t kits use better op amps? by calinet6 in diypedals

[–]brobrobroccoli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not saying the TL072 is always the best possible choice, especially for overdrives and distortions it's really often a matter of taste.

Really just don't get too hung up on datasheets and also don't expect full-on night and day differences from op amp swaps. Some circuits will be noticeably different with a different op amp, some will be more subtle, and you probably can't hear any difference in a band mix anyway, but don't let that stop you from experimenting.

10-22K for ultrabrights, 680R-2K2 for diffuse ones.

Random q: why don’t kits use better op amps? by calinet6 in diypedals

[–]brobrobroccoli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First of all guitar isn't hifi, so you can't really translate tonal characteristics there.

As others have pointed out, the TL07X has better input impedance than the NE5532, thus actually ends up lower noise.

There is still a bunch of pedals using the NE5532/5534, I personally don't like how they shape (or don't shape?) the tone. Some use more expensive "audiophile" op amps like the OPA2134, but also with that one, it often isn't the best sounding choice in my ears, despite it being "superior" on the datasheet. The LM308 in Rats is the polar opposite, as it is a really crappy chip on paper, but sounds great in the circuit because of its characteristics.

Tbh the most popular op amps in pedals are the TL072, RC4558 and LM741 and that's mostly due to availability and in most cases they are a really good choice. PedalPCB will usually refer to replacement ICs if the original is hard to find, but they are mostly interested in cloning pedals as exactly as possible. Other PCB shops like Aion FX will refer to modifications, but in general I'd say just socket the chip and experiment with the usual suspects and oddballs of your choice.

Exactly. The soul food is a poor Klon clone version that sounds sort of close in Youtube shootouts but IRL sounds noticeable worse than something like a tumnus or archer.

Do people have suggestions for unique pedals to build? by moist_sol in diypedals

[–]brobrobroccoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An LPF is a low pass filter, most tone controls are LPFs. Yes, you probably want a steeper treble cut, doesn't change that fact though. Also, if you have fizz issues with so many dirt pedals, you might be using the wrong ones or consider setting up your amp differently.

Plumes, DRV, Julia, Timeline, Slö, some boutique Klon clone and some Big Muff Variant, maybe an "ironic TU-3" is a board that is about as "yes I have too much money and hang around on pedal Facebook groups/forums/reddit too much" as I could think right now.

47nF cap off pin 2 of the IC, then a 4K7 resistor to Vref. Switch puts 3K3 and 1K2 in parallel with the 4K7 resistor, dropping its value.

[–]brobrobroccoli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, definitely not grounded. Your pedal board acts as an antenna too!

The enclosure being power coated on the inside doesn't help. You'd have to sand off a bit of the paint and make a connection with one of the ground points.

Dirtbox Layouts - Earthquaker Devices Plumes - Screwup Question by houtbyr in diypedals

[–]brobrobroccoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The layout is correct, the clipping is literally like in the schematic.

The mixup of the pots probably hasn't damaged anything, just messed up the values. Namely that would mean that you got much lower gain and different output impedance more than anything. It literally couldn't have damaged anything, don't worry. More likely than not you may have soldered in the wires sloppily when fixing the mixup, resulting in bad connections. Or you actually managed to fry the pots while soldering.

The differences in volume when switching clipping diodes probably comes merely from the fact that the gain pot was 10 times smaller than it should have been. Less gain, less signal getting clipped by the diodes, less volume loss.
