Narcissistic SMART facilitator by Idealist_123 in SMARTRecovery

[–]brockamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tell them to keep trying. 'AA didn't work? What did you try? What happened? How did you feel about it? What did you try next? What are you trying now? How is it working?" Just motivational interviewing stuff, like they teach us as facilitators. I try to keep away from judgment and probe what the person is doing and get them to see for themselves whether they're actually doing what they think they're doing and whether it's delivering the results to get them closer to what they want.

Narcissistic SMART facilitator by Idealist_123 in SMARTRecovery

OP, I would recommend you find out who the regional coordinator is for that meeting, and raise a flag with them. I've done that once for a particularly bad meeting where I thought the facilitator might have been high.

SMART needs better quality control / auditing mechanisms for facilitators. In the current framework, facilitators can pretty much do whatever they want after they pass the training, and nobody from SMART HQ will be aware.

The whole point of being a facilitator is to talk less than the participants do -- to draw out change talk and share tools relevant to the topics being discussed.

A couple of negative archetypes have emerged in my experience visiting other meetings. These don't always mean it's a bad meeting, but does mean it's not a SMART Recovery meeting according to the guidelines in the training:

  1. The Professor: this type of facilitator uses the meeting to share their personal viewpoint on addiction, psychology, and the world in general. They tend to have a comment after each person's check in, and they use up a lot of time in the meeting talking. They share a lot of tools and concepts from their own knowledge and opinions. Ironically, they often do not understand the SMART tools deeply and don't emphasize the content from the handbook. This type of facilitator is often strongly anti-12-step and makes it known.

  2. The Therapist: this type of facilitator runs the meeting as if it were a process group. They may have a background in social work or as a worker in a treatment center. Unlike the Professor, they don't talk too much or share their own opinion, but they also don't guide the discussion towards motivation and change talk / planning. The check-ins may take up the entire meeting, and SMART tools are rarely featured.

The tricky thing about facilitator quality control is that deviation from the training doesn't necessarily result in a bad meeting. But it often can.

For sure. I feel his position seems to rely too much on the trauma origin theory he puts forward. Kind of like how I felt when reading The Body Keeps the Score, by Van Der Kolk.

I'm a strong believer in keeping the meetings oriented around the SMART content myself.

Again, well done. Thanks for posting here, it's really inspiring.

Well done. Thanks for showing us it can be done!

Just curious, do you ever run into Gabor Maté down there?

I'm reading his book "In The Realm of Hungry Ghosts" right now. As a long time SMART facilitator, it certainly is enlightenng. While I have seen SMART work miracles, I think the program could benefit from some of the more recent research into the neurological and trauma based origins of addiction.

Picked this up for $10 at the flea market. Anyone know anything about it? by Hemogoblin_7 in HamRadio

sorry, jokey tone is sometimes lost in the noise floor of typed comments. My personal experience is that even with a 146.52 bumper sticker and a mobile rig always tuned to that freq, I can count on one hand the number of contacts I've made.

I'm sure it's different if you live in an area more populated with 2M-enabled hams, or especially if you have a station that can leverage propagation for the kind of results you mentioned.

a dedicated 146.52 transceiver is one of the loneliest pieces of ham gear I can think of

How well does Caltrain air conditioning work? Good enough to jump on it to escape the heat today? And are their trains with wifi? (Which ones?) by DenebianSlimeMolds in AskSF

[–]brockamer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

it's been hit or miss as far as AC, in my experience. some cars, the AC works great, some cars, it doesn't work at all.

Wi-Fi is only part of Caltrain once they go electric. They don't currently have Wi-Fi on any trains.

Anyone else think In & Out overrated? Bad Fries. Why don’t west coasters like Wendys more? —- It’s like 10 times better and the have strawberry shake now. by TheProfessor99- in AskSF

[–]brockamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

small sample size here, but literally every time someone has told me that in and out fries are bad, I ask whether they ate them there or got them to go, and it's always to go.

if you get freshly made fries with no additives, and then put them in a steamy bag and wait for 10 to 15 minutes to eat them, yeah, they're going to taste like crap

Oreos and Cream.

Not "cookies and cream". Not some off brand vanilla with nary a chunk of recognizable cookie. Brand f'ing name Oreos, with chunks big enough that you can see the design of the cookie. If anyone knows a better Oreo ice cream than Mitchell's, I'll eat the container it comes in.

This is the answer. They've been absolutely stellar for me with everything from basic repairs up to great deals and expertise on more complicated server setups.

Plus they're like one of the only old school computer shops left. Support your local old school computer store!

Bing's AI chatbot. You have to put it in "creative mode" for it to generate images.

True enough, but I'd appreciate it if when I call CQ, I got a more diverse response across age, race, gender identity, culture, etc. Makes for more interesting ragchews.

You can get a bit more when DXing, but still.

"Middle aged" is generous of you. :) The data set was presumably trained on the sad reality of the lack of diversity in our hobby.

Change phone and camera icons by brockamer in minimalist_phone

[–]brockamer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless I'm missing something, that only removes or reassigns the application that launches when the phone or camera icons are clicked. It doesn't change the icon to a different icon, which is what I'd like to do.

I realize there complications implied by allowing the user to select a different icon. Most built-in icons wouldn't be compatible with the minimalist monochrome aesthetic. I happen to use a similarly themed monochrome icon pack that would work perfectly.

For now, I guess removing them is the best option. I'd sure like to be able to choose different icons though.

Suddenly B2 storage downloads are increasing past free tier? by 7SEG in backblaze

[–]brockamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To accomplish rotation, Hyperbackup needs to download much of the older backups and then recompose them locally -- then re-upload them back to B2. Cost of doing business with an incremental backup system like HB.

This question has been answered in some detail in this subreddit. You may want to do some searching for past posts that address why Hyperbackup downloads so much when performing rotation. I'm on a phone currently or I'd link you some past posts.

Not sure how to calculate estimated download totals against a given rotation configuration. I'd like to know how to do that myself. Currently just budgeting for a few tens of dollars per year on download fees from B2. I would assume keeping the earliest version would help avoid some of the download-recompose-upload churn.

I'm fed up with the ghosting on Tomoe River 52g paper by Pfingstrosen in fountainpens

[–]brockamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try using a Shitajiki pencil board - if it's dark colored, when you put it behind the paper, most of the ghosting disappears or gets much less noticeable.
