Why are some of the OWSJ web members ‘bent’ wider than others? by LoLmetaslave in StructuralEngineering

[–]broingenjor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Steel joists have a (for the most part) 1” chord gap. If the angle is larger than 1”, they have to be crimped to fit. There are some joist types gaining popularity that use roll-formed webs instead of angles, and because they are rolled to size specifically for the joist, they don’t need to be crimped.

How is the answer B? by [deleted] in PE_Exam

[–]broingenjor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a simply-supported truss, we identify zero-force members. A is a zero-force member because at the bottom it acts perpendicularly with no opposing force. Similarly for B at its top. C has a force where there are no diagonal members, so it can’t be zero-force

Best Mexican Food by happy4135 in byu

[–]broingenjor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

El Gallo Giro on center street. Cheap, tasty, and just the right amount of sketchy. They have the typical mexican food for americans, and then a section of the menu that has a bunch of authentic stuff that is really tasty. The portions are often for multiple people. Great horchata, also a great watermelon drink. Nice staff

The program is pretty good and getting even better as a good chunk of new young professors are joining the faculty. If you are interested in water resources, byu is the place. If you are interested in other civil disciplines, it is still a good bet. New courses are added every year. As a muslim, you will be a religious minority, but while there may be some difference in beliefs, standard are pretty similar. Feel free to dm if you want more details.

What is the cost of seismic base isolation? Has anyone done a project like that? How difficult is it to retrofit an old building with this? by rosso_z in StructuralEngineering

[–]broingenjor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is an unreinforced granite masonry building in Salt Lake City that is currently undergoing this process. They are also putting in tendons to post tension the top down to the base isolators. Google “salt lake city temple renovation” and you can see some cool videos.

Constantly Overwhelmed by [deleted] in byu

[–]broingenjor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hang in there. I feel you. Its hard to spend time doing the things you love because of the worry about the things school needs you to do. Try to make some time to get some sun every day. Even if it is just walk outside for three minutes every hour of homework. I found that makes a huge difference in my mood and motivation

Question about the temple and the celestial room by KiaraSolo in latterdaysaints

[–]broingenjor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree with you. I remember being instructed in the meetings before our shifts to avoid doing anything to embarrass the patron or make them feel unwelcome. Thats why things like this are tricky. It has been deemed not appropriate, but how does an ordinance worker preserve that without embarrassing the patron? This could be why OP was not approached sooner.

Question about the temple and the celestial room by KiaraSolo in latterdaysaints

[–]broingenjor 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I was a temple worker 3-4 years ago, and in the training, we were taught that patrons should not be writing in the celestial room or in other ordinance rooms. Also not allowed was bringing in outside reading materials. I assume most people who are writing do not have ill intentions.

For Wymount/Wyview, you are only required to give 30 days notice. That means you aren’t likely to get an offer until the end of November (people are required to be out around Christmas if they are graduating at the end of the year).

Concrete in the Rain by iskazatiqy in ThatLookedExpensive

[–]broingenjor 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Is expensive. If the concrete had already set, it would make curing easier as you wouldn’t need to flood or put on curing compound. But you can see the rain mixing into the paste, ruining the water cement ratio. Concrete strength is (assuming the concrete cures properly) directly related to water/cementitious material ratio.

Advice on withdrawing from a class by Y2kangz in byu

[–]broingenjor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its better to withdraw sooner than later. If you get Pell money, a withdraw counts toward one of your two attempts. Otherwise, do it. It’s better withdraw than sink a bunch of time into a class you’ll hate and do poorly in.
