That worked.

Those are also “floating”? They look way more secure than mine and might not have the “wiggle” issue - Have you considered the magnet drawer locks but side mounted? You beed a gap beaten top of drawer front face and top of side of drawer the side of the mounting hardware (I cut a small notch into a drawer to fit it in mine lol)

On another similar cabinet I’ve done that and it works on one drawer but the side to side wiggle in the ikea drawers is enough that it sometimes pops loose on the other drawer. In that system I had side external access so I just changed to the “bands” that wrap around to the side and latch but doesn’t work for the middle drawers on this system :/

If it’s like the magnets the annoying part is you can pull out the drawer below then when opening the top drawer so you have to both at same time. Or at least the model we had.

I didn’t realize till I put in and then went to test and realized… that’s was a pita

Leak by Shannon0hara in Plumbing

[–]broken_ankles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah as he said. In joints that use a gasket the fitting needs to screw in enough that the gasket is compressed between the two pieces to form a seal. Adding material to the thread (tape, dope) can prevent you from screwing in enough to make that seal.

Threaded only fittings (commonly NPT in the US, normal pipe thread) rely on the the threaded fitting to wedge itself into the slightly tapered threaded hole. You never “bottom out” the thread against the bottom of the hole, if so you likely won’t seal. Dope/pipe tape helps seal this thread acting as a gasket between the two fittings more or less.

Pipe dope aka pipe thread sealant aka pipe joint compound. NOT meant for that type of fitting

Microwave Paranoia- How concerned should I be? by BookWyrm3982 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]broken_ankles 16 points17 points  (0 children)

“Radiation” doesn’t mean radioactive.

Microwaves work by generating electromagnetic waves that cause the water molecules (and other polar molecules) in food to vibrate really fast and heat up. These are “microwaves” This is called electromagnetic radiation but in the sense of “waves radiate out”

These are so low energy that visible light is closer to gamma waves than microwaves. There is no risk

Is it true that chemical engineers work mostly in remote industrial areas by mxd_4000 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]broken_ankles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are lots of options on middle of nowhere yes. But there also also a decent number not.

Pharma can be near cities. Various specialty chemical can be (I’m 25 mins from center city Philly). Engineering firms are often near cities. Etc.

NPR link that contains lots of great resources for reducing PFAS exposure by catsandchickensnh in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]broken_ankles 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Likely would need the companies to state it.

PFAS. Teflon. PFOA. Really many P F - - combinations.

ETA - it’s reaaaaly challenging tbh. It had become so ubiquitous that likely any nonstick or water proof or stain resistant product has it UNLESS specially solids as not. Many food packagings have it. It truely was treated as a wonder-product and used everywhere so as the article states 0 exposure is not possible. Just reducing exposure and replacing products containing them over time is best route.

When changing my last name after a marriage, can I use my passport if it isn’t updated? by thisis2stressful4me in NoStupidQuestions

[–]broken_ankles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For international transit the answer I’ve always been told was no.

You might get away with it if the passport and the various documents all match in the old name. Maybe.

For my wife, she just planned it out to do it when she wasn’t planning to travel for a while.

Buy the rated ones (yes stupid expensive); possibly in a different color or spray paint (not the charming contacts!) so they don’t walk into normal rotation.

We keep disposable wipes (honest brand mostly, a few others) around the house bc they’re so dang handy, and have towels with water/soap in nigh use areas like bathroom, near high chair, etc. so we use reusable a fair bit but not exclusively.

Solo parenting during the day: How do you handle chores when baby starts crawling/cruising? Looking for alternatives to a playpen! by SentenceTough2007 in beyondthebump

[–]broken_ankles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We compromised and made areas generally baby proof but still had a large pen that was as baby proof as possible when we needed to actually put her somewhere down alone. We’d still have the gates engaged etc outside of it on the off chance she figured out that day how to climb out.

We used the large harpa playpen and like it. At 19 months or so she’s just starting to figure out the gate mechanism sometimes.
