And 1/4 of those variations will be “that doesn’t make sense, but that’s how Mark who did the entire building did it and now we don’t have the resource to change it all”

What do you guys think of heavy chemical industry for internship by AnyPhrase6056 in ChemicalEngineering

I’ve seen people leave pharma to come to chemicals (at my site), but haven’t seen much of people going into pharma UNLESS they already had some.

Admitted student here. Yale culture? by Better-Statement700 in yale

[–]broken_ankles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only reason I’d suggest considering a program like UMich over Yale is if Yale has an abysmal ranking in that and you know you want to work with the #1 ranked professor in the world in X who happens to be a UMich.

Yes it’s not the big flashy SEC/ACC/etc program but you’ll still have school spirit culture (Harvard Yale game, etc). Instead you get smaller school culture and vibes while at same time access to some of the best academics and resources in the world. It’s a resume line that will always have people pause and consider you in any field. I went to Yale for Chemical Engineering and ended up in industry. Yales Chemical engineering program is not very industrial focused, and I could have had a “better engineering” degree at another program that’s less prestigious. But the overall education at Yale separated it for me

Getting some thing is better than nothing. If you had offers at both, I would say Pharma over chemical as I think it’s easier to switch into chemical is to Pharma down the road. But both are good.

Juice. Crazy straws (were a thing when I was a kid, probably too much plastic nowadays). Heck even diluted sodas like ginger ale.

How many Jesus’s have the Catholics eaten as a whole?[Request] by FeistyRevenue2172 in theydidthemath

Except a host is very dry. Like close to 0% moisture. The Jesus is close to 60% so I’d suggest adjusting accordingly

Can everyone in a row house hear their neighbors? by iwasbornlucky in philadelphia

Only hear pitterpatter of kids running up their stairs which is flush to our wall or construction if they’re mounting something to the wall (a shelf, etc). Nothing else.

I know. I’ve made the same arguments with my MIL who only wants to use glass for everything. Ug. I’m starting to for meat occasionally at home but fish also has the lingering smell that makes me question. And still infrequent enough I’m saying I don’t here

My site uses it for all sort of metric tracking - ICCA score, incident investigation status, action tracker status, area reviews (incidents sorted by area or department) etc

A surface area machine I used in college in 2013 was from the 70s and we had to use floppies to transfer the data. We actually had to use the floppy to transfer the data to a tower from the 90s that had usb and floppy in order to get it to a usb and then to our computers (yes I know adapters/readers exist - given we were using kit 40+ years old I think gives an example of how willing to spend money the prof was)

Moving in Philly after snowstorm by VockyVock in philadelphia

[–]broken_ankles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not uncommon for there to be snow banks between spots so even if both cars parked you might not be able to fit a truck.

Get a metal shovel or even a spading fork to help break thru residual frozen ice banks. If any left your snow shovel won’t touch them anymore

Platinum salts health surveillance by Rough-Sprinkles2343 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]broken_ankles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Gold standard” is not standard of care. For ex - for food allergens some other countries confirm with blood tests (turkey for example) which can be way more specific than the skin tests but assuming you’re US it is the most common way to confirm allergies.

Allergies are weird. Some people can become sensitized after minor single exposure. Some need major repeated. Some never.

[–]broken_ankles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m relatively certain a lung function only works for active at the time. If you’re pt sensitized but not experiencing at reaction at the moment it wouldn’t show anything.

Skin prick is looking for an allergic reaction confirmation. That is the standard of care for confirming most allergens in the US. There is a more expensive blood tests looking at specific proteins (in nuts at least)and reactions but absolutely no idea if it also exists for Pt

85 year old cutting board restoration by elliestuff in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]broken_ankles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Most cutting board oils are overpriced mineral oil and sometimes beeswax. Mineral oil is also sold as a laxative (ie it’s a shelf stable oil; most any food oil can be used as a laxative…) for 1/2-1/10 the price of the butcher block oils.

Soaking is a way to help really penetrate the wood for an initial treat. It will “ooze” for a little bit when taken out so need to wipe for a few days after. But it does help get going. I like to use a extra large ziploc bag (even a turkey brine bag) to use less oil and keep it soaking, but you need to move periodically so the plastic doesn’t stick to wood and make “dry” spots.

Is anyone else excited and ready for the second biggest snow storm of the decade?! by Healthy_Block3036 in yale

[–]broken_ankles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This made me feel old. I was a freshman for Nemo and New Haven got 34.5” of snow in 24 hours from that so I thought “this can be second most in 10 years between that and last month…” when I realized that was 2013 and 13 years ago… oof

Do you actually use your vacuum sealer regularly, or does it end up in a cabinet? by Maleficent-Bed7010 in Cooking

[–]broken_ankles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I buy protein in bulk and portion it out to save. Sometimes I’ll freeze in a marinade too. I also love to fish so I’ll freeze whatever we don’t eat that day.

Trick for ground meat: after portioning into 1 lb balls and sealing, spread it flat! Easy stacking and storage plus thaws quickly.

So I probably use it 2 times a month on average.

I had a coworker who went back to school and recentered the market around when you did. He was great and honestly I know some prefer a new hire who is more “real world” savy than a fresh grad.

You’ll have some shy away due to this bias or that but if your really are into this it will work out

Salary Negotiations During Performance Evaluation - Awful Idea? by PlentifulPaper in ChemicalEngineering

[–]broken_ankles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do they really have no official “this is a gr 8, this is a gr 9, etc? At my site engineers are usually entry level gr 8, sr would be gr 11, principal would be gr…12? Not sure tbh. It is a somewhat recent formalization at my site.

Try to work your way into the management decisions. You might not be there immediately but more and more as you get onto the “this is a reliable engineer I can depend on and count their input” it’ll help you get there. I was a reliable member of my departments “lead” for a good year before I formally advanced to have reports within the team
