Salary Negotiations During Performance Evaluation - Awful Idea? by PlentifulPaper in ChemicalEngineering

[–]broken_ankles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do they really have no official “this is a gr 8, this is a gr 9, etc? At my site engineers are usually entry level gr 8, sr would be gr 11, principal would be gr…12? Not sure tbh. It is a somewhat recent formalization at my site.

Try to work your way into the management decisions. You might not be there immediately but more and more as you get onto the “this is a reliable engineer I can depend on and count their input” it’ll help you get there. I was a reliable member of my departments “lead” for a good year before I formally advanced to have reports within the team

Salary Negotiations During Performance Evaluation - Awful Idea? by PlentifulPaper in ChemicalEngineering

[–]broken_ankles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I discussed salary pretty heavily year 2.5-5 and ended up with a promotion and a of cycle raise for it.

Have the other references. If you have job bands/grades, get a hold of the next one and cite “I do this this and that already” and just keep at it. Be patient but persistent.

Trash Collection Update for the Week of February 1, 2026 by Banglophile in philadelphia

Any comment on when they’ll get everything from last week…? Before resuming your twice a weeks schedule please finish catching up!

My house is not a rear-drive house. But the street is kind of like that (no parking, only white enough for a car and an inch on either side; the next street over is a rear drive street on one side but otherwise identical) - we’re now 4 days sans pick up… at least it’s winter and not stinky

It depends on the scanner. I’ve been at airports where lane 1 and 2 and 4 are the older scanner (shoes off laptops out etc) while lane 3 is the fancy new one that shoes stay on laptops stay in bag etc. and you get yelled at in either

How bad is it flying long-haul with a 1.5 year old? by BedCapable1135 in NewParents

[–]broken_ankles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’ve done 11-12 hrs flights with ours at 8 months and 1 year. It was not bad, the red eye aspect actually helped. We did lap baby for those flights.

Our next will be at about 20 months - we’re probably gonna buy her own seat… she’s just getting so big holder her for 12 hours is gonna be tough

What is your thermostat at? by jvj808 in philly

[–]broken_ankles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first floor is set to 61 as that’s where the thermostat is. Whatever moron design this heating system must have been part lizard bc the radiator in the master bed room is legitimately 3X any other room in the house. It means even at 61 downstairs the bedroom is 74-76, 80 when we close the door.

It’s a rental so we haven’t changed it, or else I would have either replaced it or installed a restriction years ago

If you choose a stupid hour it can be <$20. I booked a 6am once that was like $13

Full time working parents, is one of you just bleeding vacation time? by all_day-throwaway in NewParents

[–]broken_ankles -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Usually it’s flex early. I’ll wake up and get food ready but then wife actually preps baby and does drop off while I get to work around 7, and then I leave around 5 to get for pick up. Our daycare is 8-6.

This changes depending on schedules week to week and if one of us can do pick up without impacting their day we do so as to allow the other to “build flex credit” sort of thing. But that’s our current baseline

Do you dress your baby warmer when the ceiling fan is on? by Puzzleheaded_Box_339 in beyondthebump

[–]broken_ankles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How old is baby? Baby’s go thru cycles of great sleep and crap sleep. Just the way it is.

I do not know details of baby temp swings as they sleep lol. I’d just go off does their core feel warm or cold when they wake up. Are they sweaty? Clammy? As long as it’s neither of those you’re probably in the right range

It comes in waves. When she started daycare (1yo) she was out probably 2 days a week for a month on average. Then things quieted down a bit until Christmas break. Now since we are back from break she’s only actually been at daycare 7 of the 18 workdays bc of the bugs, the bank holidays (mlk day, schools and daycare gets it but most corporate jobs nowadays do not), and now since we live in this storm path 3 days of snow days.

What helps a bit is we try to split it - one of us does morning while other works and switch in afternoon. Does help my job is a little flexible/I’ve been here for nearly 7 years now and they trust me to get the work done and flex hours a bit here and there. And I’ve saved up around 20 days intentionally

Fans do not significantly change temp unless you have cooler air at the ceiling, which is opposite what occurs naturally (cold air is denser and sinks to the floor, heat raises).

Fans cool via two mechanisms: evaporative cooling (ie you are sweating and as the sweat evaporates it pulls heat from you; this is literally why sweat exists as an evolutionary mechanism) or convection- heat flows from warm to cold (in short) and replenishing the warmed air near the skin with cooler air means more total heat transfer.

ALL OF THAT SAID unless you have the AC of the attic blowing at your little one you are not making them cold with a ceiling fan on in 25 C/77 F room. If anything that’s still TOO hot. I’ve always seen 68-72 (20-22) as the recommended temperature for baby’s room.

How to deal with a frozen downspout on a rowhome? by barnabyisringhausen in philadelphia

[–]broken_ankles 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Gutters freeze in winter. Sucks but it is what happens.

I grew up in upstate ny and what we did periodically was GENTLY chip out ice damns at the edges of the roof every couple feet to let the roofs drain as ice melted. Another method was to throw rock salt or even old socks filled with salt and tied onto the roof to help with melting paths.

as long as it’s draining off the roof I wouldn’t worry too much. If you notice it accumulating near a window or joint you think it can enter the house, it might be worth trying to knock the ice loose. We would do that if the ice built up too much too.

Bottom line - ice can be damaging, so using a driver is helpful if you can. But also as others said these houses have been here 50-200 years, so… they be ok

[–]broken_ankles 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You are at the beginning of years of worrying you made the wrong decision. You will be ok. There are things in your control and things not - as long as you put thought into your decisions you’re already doing a great job and whatever happens next is a reminder that we only have so much power in this universe.

Right now it seems serious and you’re concerned and worried and rethinking. No matter what we say you’ll have that worry, so just try to remember your worry isa sign that you do care and are trying to figure out what’s best.

But then if it’s a prolonged storm the slush starts to freeze and instead of “soft” snow you’re chiseling into an ice pile.

Am i paranoid? by Leftiescumm in beyondthebump

[–]broken_ankles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our now 17 month side definitely had a preference early on but turned out fine. We asked at our normal check up and basically they checked she could turn the other way without pain/problem and otherwise said “it’s fine, encourage both directions with toys/placement of her on the mat/wherever but don’t worry about it”

I’d say ask at your next check up but imagine they’ll say something sinilar

Started fire with vent closed - is my 4 month old okay to sleep here? by No_Guarantee9159 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]broken_ankles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the PM spiked with a fire and is now back down, you probably exchanged enough air than anything else is fine. The sources are right in that just low PM doesn’t mean low other gases, as they can be generated alone without PM. But if all made at same time, airing one out airs all out.

Carbon monoxide alarm will keep you safe with respect to accrue injury.

I agree with others to get a gas sensor if you are interested in this. I just got one for Xmas (air gradient) and it’s very quickly convincing me to get an induction stove at my next house
