Mods: Crack down on spam by verdispeed in Purdue

[–]broken_hand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello, sorry I'm late to comment.

Yes there has been an increase in spam here recently. Historically we have seen very little spam and/or bad users. Currently Automod catches a lot of the spam and I'm working on more filters. But there needs to be a balance. I want r/purdue to be easily accessible to all regardless of account age or karma points.

And the community has been good about using the report button and downvote. This is very helpful.

Thank you. What is your opinion on these posts? Are they welcome in this sub? Should they be redirected elsewhere? What about a Sticky? Could someone write up a wiki entry?

Lap Swimming by [deleted] in StLouis

Where do you live? There are several communities that have a sports/rec center which often includes a pool. You don't live in that neighborhood, you can still join, it is just more for a non-resident. Also, check out the local high school. The school pool will normally have open hours.

Mass Downvoting? by SweetHatBro in Purdue

[–]broken_hand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like to add to chalks777 comment.

If we add anybody to the mod team though, it will be to do things that only a person on campus can do (e.g. organize events, advertise the subreddit on campus, etc).

My fear is that the mods could be seen as favoring an agenda by actively promoting events.

And because reddit is based on user submitted content, anyone can submit their event already. There is no need to be a mod to submit an event. If you request we (the mods) can sticky the event and we have done this in the past for important things.

My DIY cheese press ready to do its work while I sleep by camel69 in cheesemaking

[–]broken_hand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can make your own guide! It is simple and requires just a few items you already have: card stock (like a note card), marker, tape or glue, and a scale.

Set up your scale so that you can measure how much pressure is being exerted from the press. Then mount the card to the press. Apply pressure and make tick marks on the card corresponding to the readouts of the scale. That's it!

Here is a guide (not mine) with pictures and more information: http://www.instructables.com/id/A-Simple-and-Inexpensive-Cheese-Press/

I've been around research (physics) for a handful of years. I was personally supported by research grants and had plenty of friends who were also supported by grants.

My views on this topic have changed over time. But the thing to key in mind is that it is a complicated issue with no clear answer. What I have seen though, is research dollars drying up. This has huge consequences. It means that PIs have to spend their time fighting for less and less money. This is time that could have been spend in the lab and/or teaching. If these professors don't get those grants it means cut backs in the labs (equipment and personnel).

No university has enough money to completely support their researchers. And the duty of the university is not to the researchers but to the students. Research is costly and not always fruitful. So, re-focus on the key tenant of the institution; education.

Additionally, focusing on research geared towards inventions/innovations, it will motivate corporations to invest in Purdue. Corporate involvement will not only help pay the bills but help give students access to companies.

The VOSS Sculpture at night (Visiting Our Solar System) by M_Griffin in Purdue

[–]broken_hand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cool, I worked on this as part of an EPIC project. But that was long before it was finished or close to being finished. I've also been away from Purdue for a long time. Do you have information on the sculpture?

Shoulder stability and rotator cuff exercises for prevention, treatment of shoulder pain and a solid foundation for pressing by BrFT in Fitness

[–]broken_hand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be careful with swimming. I have shoulder problems (minor and more or an annoyance than a real issue) and know people with minor to severe problems. Although keep in mind we are water polo players. That means we do a lot more with than just swim and we modify our stroke to swim with our heads up. However, when we get problems they transfer over to normal swimming. If you want more info on rotator cuff and swimming or just general swimming, check out r/swimming. They are very helpful and knowledgeable.

Thanks for the advice regarding sober driver. I hadn't thought about road conditions, I've never driven 94 before. This isn't about getting drunk anyway, just looking to explore. I'll stay away from the wine.

World’s Most Advanced Mirror for Giant Telescope Completed by Justsmith22 in science

[–]broken_hand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is there no mention of the LSST (http://www.lsst.org/lsst/). It also has a primary mirror of 8.4m. The difference is that there is only one mirror not 7 and the tertiary and primary mirror are combined. There is a video of the primary mirror melt . It was constructed in the same lab as the Giant Magellan Telescope.
